  • @ZhangtheGreat yeah. you should do one for 90s handhelds

  • I can't believe pokemon wasnt on here

  • @brokeherlittlebones, did you think about what IS on here and how Pokemon could've been squeezed out?

  • How could OoT POSSIBLY be better than DOOM??

  • @Immortalshadowarrior, gameplay variety. In DOOM, you shoot things. In OoT, you shoot things...and slash things...and explore things...and solve things...and throw boomerangs at things =)

  • What no crash bandicoot?

  • @BackFlipsters, it didn't beat Mario for the lone platforming slot.

  • DOOM And METAL GEAR SOLID

  • I have never played any Zelda games and I am proud of it.

  • How the hell could there be a top ten of 90's games and Sonic not even be on it?

  • @TheOSUfan46, because of Mario and the "one per genre" rule. I could only choose one platformer, and I went with Mario 64.

  • @ZhangtheGreat How tough was it to pick one over the other? Also if there was no one per genre rule where would you place Sonic?

  • @TheOSUfan46, not very. Mario 64 was the better platformer and far more significant to the development of the industry as a whole. Sonic was eliminated rather quickly.

I don't even think about ifs. Before I even began making the list, I knew "one per genre" was needed. The 90s were too loaded to not have a rule that balanced the genres out.

  • WHERE THE HELL IS POKEMON AND TONY HAWK'S PRO SKATER YOU DOPE ADDICT

  • @BamaDillon, either you're trolling or you think typing in caps increases your penis size =)

  • I like the number 1!!! Its my favourite game of Legend of Zelda!!!!

  • Predictable.

  • i disagree with your critera. 'one game per genre' the 90s was the decades of platformers, the platformers of the 90s where better then the other genres and should be reflected. sonic and mario should be represented. also goldeneye changes gaming as mouch as any game of the 90s

  • @cv003799, as big of a platformer fan as I am, it's really narrow-minded to say that platformers are the supreme genre. Gamers all have different tastes, which is why this list needed to be balanced.

The 90s were more than just platformers. It was the decade where numerous genres now popular today were born and/or popularized (i.e. FPS, RPG, RTS, fighting). It was the decade that went from 8-bit blips and beeps to full 3D gameplay. In fact, by the decade's end, platforming had died.

  • EARTHBOUND!

  • WHERE WAS POKEMON YOU HOMO?

  • @nathan23432, if you think asking me that way is going to get you the answer you want, you've got a lot to learn about politeness =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat Then I shall ask politely... *Ahem* Good chap, shall you kindly indulge me as to the reason why you have not included Pokemon in this list of top ten games?

  • @azi2g, remember that I have a "one per genre" rule. That means only one RPG could be chosen. In a decade loaded with RPGs, Pokemon had to compete with Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, a slew of Final Fantasy games, etc. Its chances to be chosen were slim.

  • @ZhangtheGreat YEEEEAAAH! EARTHBOUND!

  • @ZhangtheGreat ok, I understand.

  • Earthbound and Spyro the Dragon

  • @phazonness117, cut and cut. Earthbound had to compete against too many RPGs to be chose. Spyro had to compete against too many platformers to be chosen.

  • @ZhangtheGreat yeah the game with the most fanboys ever aka final fantasy 7 and 3d platformers it's own genre and banjo, crash, and mario 64 were the only other 3d games out there

  • @phazonness117, well I can't go by your definition of "genre" when assessing FF games. Plus, I only selected one platformer overall (2D or 3D). If I wanted to distinguish between 2D and 3D games, I would have.

  • only one i agree with is starcraft and doom

  • @Troforso I say his conditions were biased. Even if not spyro Super Mario World was better than Super Mario 64.

  • @phazonness117, bias? No. I just weigh impact and legacy heavier than many others who create these lists. Neither Spyro nor SMW accomplished what SM64 did. SM64 didn't just create an outstanding game. It kick-started the 3D era, an era that hasn't slowed down since. 3D games before SM64 were just experiments. 3D games after SM64 used it as their prototype (even today). As great as Spyro and SMW were, neither game launched a revolution.

  • @ZhangtheGreat legacy look at all the smw rom hacks, popularity SMW outsold Super Mario 64, and while Super Mario 64 introduced the mechanics not many games use it's formula aka do task A collect the star leave the level, no more games use the banjo method of collect item A,B,C, some can be randomly found others you need to do tasks

  • @phazonness117, impact and legacy > popularity. A game that leads to a shift in the way the industry develops newer games has established a much more significant legacy than a game that only sold a ton.

  • @Troforso, "only ONE i agree with is starcraft and doom"

    Counting FTL? =)

  • GRAND TURISMO??????

    fail, it's spelled: Gran Turismo!

  • @MASTERHACKER1111, how about reading the last sentence of the video description before rushing to scream at someone =)

  • Zelda is first? It's under category shit game!

  • @lesclaypool0727, troll =)

  • Play Tomba for PS1 and your list will look different

  • @SirtakiMaster, played it aplenty. It's not a top 10 for me.

  • doom over super mario 64? i will not accept this

  • @Happytreefriendsfan3, impact on its genre was the reason. DOOM led to an explosion in the popularity of the FPS. Super Mario 64, while taking us into the 3D era, did little to save platformers.

  • hm, hm, hm sf2 turbo is a expansion P_P

  • @Darcond, no it's not. An expansion requires the full game to play. SF2 Turbo doesn't require SF2 to play. It's an update (not a remake), which is not one of the exclusions.

  • whats the name of the game in the beginning song??

  • @majood88, that's the Pokemon theme.

  • good list but weres goldeneye and halflife just 2 that should be there :)

  • @TediousAffair, did you, like many others who've commented already, also overlook the "one game per genre" rule I preset? I even listed each game's genre in case anyone missed it.

  • Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. 'Nough said...

  • Mario 64, Zelda 64, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Doom, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Half-Life, Chrono Trigger

  • @EkajTheSwordsman, what about them? And are you ignoring the "one per genre" rule?

  • @ZhangtheGreat Relax. Lots of people are leaving lists of their favorite games from the nineties in the comments section. I don't care about your "one game per genre" rule. It's just my opinion; you're entitled to your list as well.

  • @EkajTheSwordsman, make sure you state that and explain it when you post. Posting just a list can be interpreted in multiple ways.

  • my 10 best vidéo games 90s aren't here. Some I don't even known they exist

  • @elfenoire01, well of course they're not here. Unless you made the list, there shouldn't be any reason to think they'll be here.

  • Obviously not going to read all 968 comments but would add my vote for NHL '94. Others I would recommend (not criticising your Top 10 but merely suggesting my preferences) are Tenchu : Stealth Assassins and Warzone 2100 (the latter of which was so good that it survives as a free download and in my opinion still hasn't been surpassed). Remarkably ahead of it's time.

  • (imo) In no particular order: 1. Zelda Ocarina of Time 2. Mario 64 3. Street Fighter 2 Turbo 4. Daytona USA 5. Super Metroid 6. Metal Gear Solid 7. Sonic 8. Final Fantasy VII 9. Half-Life 10. Streets Of Rage 2
  • eh, so sick of seeing street fighter on everyones list... looking for something different

  • Forgot Goldeneye

  • @NbAlIvEr100, forgot nothing. GoldenEye lost the FPS spot to DOOM.

  • @NostalgicSince2005, it's all about who you ask. Because FF fans will never agree on a single "best" game, I had to choose based on popularity (since I can't choose the "best" game if the most die hard fans can't even conclude what's "best").

  • @NostalgicSince2005

    FFVI>FFIV and VII

  • mgs 4 live

  • I spent way too much time playing simcity3000 after my cuz gave it to me back in the day

  • Zelda OoT=greatest game ever

  • some wonderful games here!!!

  • this person obviously under 25

  • @blackcladlizard, you do know you can see my age by clicking my name, right?

  • @ZhangtheGreat we're the same age and all you chose was late 90s games? c'mon

  • @blackcladlizard, why is that a surprise? The best year in the 90s (and possibly best year of all time) for gaming was 1998. It shouldn't shock you to see quite a few entries from 1998 on the list (MGS, Starcraft, OoT).

I don't understand your gripe. I had a fair share of early-90s games (TSB, SF2, DOOM), and the list isn't restricted to one per year. If you want something different, feel free to make your own list.

  • No Super Metroid or even Castlevania: SotN? Huh, ok...

  • @TheTrueDecepticreep, only one game per genre. Please reread the rules. I selected Super Mario 64 as the platformer of the decade, meaning no other platformer could be included.

  • @ZhangtheGreat I read your rules, I just don't think Mario 64 is no where near as good as SotN or Super Metroid.

  • @TheTrueDecepticreep, impact was the ultimate tiebreaker for Mario 64. As outstanding as Super Metroid or SotN were, neither game led to anything. Both helped close off the 2D platforming era in grand style, but it was Mario 64 that kick-started the 3D era of gaming, an era that we haven't stopped embracing since. Of course, all of this was because it was so well polished with near-perfect controls, superb camera, and phenomenal gameplay. No other 3D game before SM64 accomplished this.

  • @ZhangtheGreat I can see your point.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Also, many people consider Zelda 64 to be an action rpg, so by your own "rules" you have 2 rpgs on the list.

  • @TheTrueDecepticreep, "many people consider..." doesn't automatically make it right. Zelda's RPG-ness is too much in doubt and constantly up for debate; that disqualified it as a solid, no-questions-asked, no-brainer RPG (i.e. Final Fantasy). "Fantasy-adventure" suits Zelda much better, since there's little doubt about that label.

  • goldeneye?

  • @highlandcommando, lost to DOOM.

  • NO MORTAL KOMBAT? You Serious Clark?

  • @grod79, Clark? Who's Clark? Anyway, MK got beaten out by SF2. Want my reasons? They're all over the comments page.

  • WOOO METAL GEAR SOLID FTW

  • 3 words for sports category. Mutant League Hockey.

  • Sonic and mdk isnt from the 90s but from the 80s

  • @Xaiando, Sonic debuted in 1991.

  • wow ff7 should be in the number one spot, and fuck a gay football game, nhl 94 genesis ver, or nhl 98 ps1

  • @moogleff13, troll =)

  • My phones game graphics are better than that :D

  • Alright! FF7 was one of them!

  • Where the fuk is sonic, Mortal kombat, & mario kart!!??…man.. Fuk your list!!

  • @dirtfacenative, troll =)

  • I've been looking for that version of Doom! What system was it for? I used to have it for Ps1 but I'm not sure if they had it for other systems too. (At least I think it I had it for Ps1)

  • @CartridgeJunkie64, that's the PC version.

  • simcity 3000...fucking classic

  • And rayman ? And pokemon ? And Crash bandicoot ? And Super Mario World ?

  • @Tankoke, *sigh* I wish people would read the title and rules first before throwing games out in the open, because frankly I'm getting sick and tired of answering the same questions over and over again.

    - See the number 10 in the video? That's how many games I'm limited to.

    - See "one game per genre"? That's how many of each I can choose per genre. I even wrote the genres for each entry in case you missed it at the beginning.

Now use logic and tell me if I can include everything YOU want.

  • Ok... is there a list of games i don't have in my collection that i can emulate that isn't half bad i have played chrono trigger and all 9 final fantasies all the way through anyone have any ideas about a good rpg that won't put me to sleep -.-

  • not a bad list i would have put Resident Evil in there and probably Breath of Fire but good for the most part

  • THUMBS UP IF YOU THINK ZELDA WINS TOP 1

  • @HannahLyn9 The equivalent of "Thumbs up if you are not a complete moron."

  • R u mentally challenged?

  • @bomber1986, says the guy who spells "are you" as "r u" =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat WHERE IS TEKKEN 1

  • @tinygangster666, stacked against SF2? Tekken didn't have that big of a chance.

  • @ZhangtheGreat hahahahahaha street fighter 2? wasnt that 2D LMAOO

  • @tinygangster666, maybe you should study gaming history a bit before declaring a game unworthy. SF2 changed fighters forever with its pristine controls, addictive gameplay, and character appeal. Its imitators (including Tekken) are everywhere. Its balance is still unchallenged today, and it remains the preferred fighter of choice in many arcade tournaments. Tekken might be 3D, but that's all it was. It never reached SF2's impact on the genre and gaming landscape.

  • @ZhangtheGreat dude the only fighting games that can beat tekken is mortal kombat end of discussion tekken also changed how fighting games were seeing as though fighting games became 3-d afterwards INCLUDING STREET FIGHTER not to mention tekken had better stories comparing tekken to streetfighter is like comparing mario to pacman mario had way more content--tekken had way more content than streetfighter

  • @tinygangster666, if 3D is the only thing Tekken had going for it, that's not much at all. And how is MK the only game that stacks up? MK1 was completely overrated; all it had was blood. Just look at the reviews: The Genesis version got praised for blood, while the SNES version had better controls and graphics but was slammed. MK2 had one of the best fighting systems ever, which made MK1's look even worse.

SF2 took fighters mainstream and remains mainstream today. Tekken? Not as much.

  • @ZhangtheGreat well this is the last thing im going to say to you.. despite the tekken franchise being 7 years younger than the street fighter franchise tekken has managed to sell 9 million more copies than street fighter

    heh.

  • @tinygangster666, sales numbers mean little. ET is one of the top selling games for the Atari 2600, and look at how good that is. SF2's sales numbers will be lower because most of the attention it attracted was at the arcades. Besides, we're talking about individual games here (SF2 Turbo vs. Tekken 1), not an entire series, so total sales for an entire series don't matter that much.

  • Check out my renditions of Star Fox & Myst!

  • @titanicpiano14, no promoting your own stuff in my videos. If you want others to see them, post them as responses and I'll more than likely approve.

  • chrono trigger instead of ff7 for best jrpg of the 90's?? but obviously ff7 was more successful and is a great game anyway so it probably deserved it... nvm

  • a snes game deserve to be on the list.

  • @irondeth2, SF2?

  • @ZhangtheGreat besides that.

  • @irondeth2, not what you originally said, so this discussion is over =)

  • zelda.....over DOOM........ thats more impossible than dividing by zero

  • WHERE THE FUCK IS SONIC...SONIC WAS THE BEST SERIES IN THE 90's IT WAS THE SHIT

  • @zachsims520, remember kids: typing in caps does not make your penis bigger =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat sorry my caps lock was on

  • @ZhangtheGreat oh:-(

  • @zachsims520

Sonic did not make the best series in the 90's where did you get that crap from? I used to work at Emerald Software and we were ahead of information on which games sale better and which games are known as "wasted development" Sonic 1 barely sold approx 4 mill copies and sonic 2 approx 6 mill WW During 90's SEGA really didn't have that much hits as most people actually think. The most record breaking best selling game by the end of dec 31 1999 is tetris which sold approx 30 mill.

  • @FooNado do you even know what an opinion is>

  • The 1990s brought us so many memorable game franchises – Sonic, Fatal Fury, Doom, Earthworm Jim, Megaman X, King of Fighters, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Arc the Lad, Samurai Shodown, Virtua Fighter, Shenmue, Streets of Rage, Pokémon, Soul Calibur, Metal Gear Solid, Seiken Densetsu, Metal Slug, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto, Donkey Kong Country, Guilty Gear, The Elder Scrolls, Breath of Fire, Legacy of Kain, Dead or Alive, Chrono, etc.

  • half life > any of these games

  • Worst list ever, starcraft over w2, no diablo, civilisation, lba or other classics, but n3 mario64, omg and 1st zelda...

  • @Poludjelitulipan, troll =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat dont use words whose meaning you dont know little silly boy ;)

  • @Aluminiumimmunitaet, troll =P

  • @ZhangtheGreat criticism =P

  • @Aluminiumimmunitaet, constructive criticism = always accepted. Non-constructive criticism = trolling.

  • @Poludjelitulipan This kinda is his list... People tend to forget that in top 10 lists.

  • Check out my renditions of Zelda, Myst, & Knuckles Chaotix!

  • Great list. IMO I would have Link to the Past before Ocarina, but I like the list.

  • Doom>Zelda I do love Zelda but... you know it's fucking Doom

  • why is it tht all 90s games had the best soundtracks ive ever heard...and nowadays we all get...zero soundtrack, most games i play mostly have gunshot sounds, explosions, guys screaming, slashing sounds and whtsoever...noone ever stops to think about the music -.- theres too much silence in videogaming

  • Sonic Adventure? Or at least Sonic 3&Knuckles? I think they're better platformers than Mario 64.

  • @PrrrromotionGiven, that's always debatable. What isn't is impact, which SM64 is miles ahead of the competition in. After all, it's THE game that set off the 3D era, an era that hasn't ended since.

  • @PrrrromotionGiven mario owns sonic kid

  • @nick7305 I'm not trying to start fan war here, can we just forget about this before it gets out of hand? I will say that Mario 64 is very good, just to clarify, though. I like both series' games.

  • no banjo kazooie or tooie those were awsome thas just sucks

  • @nick7305, one game per genre. Once Super Mario 64 was picked as the platformer, all others were out.

  • @nick7305 Yeah, Tooie was great :D I especially liked the bosses

  • @ZhangtheGreat The action/adventure genre would have been close to choose from with the likes of Res Evil and Tomb Raider also fighting for top 10 spot.

Btw.. I thought there was less that 10 genres... RPG, Beat-em-ups, Shoot-em-ups, Action/Adventure, Platform, Driving/Racing, Sports, Puzzle

  • are you high? where's c&c: tiberium dawn?

  • @FlameBaiter, it had to compete against Starcraft and a slew of other RTS titles for the lone RTS spot.

  • I think Pokemon should have got a mention

  • @Monosono120, no honorable mentions. Otherwise everyone will want every game ever released in the 1990s to be on here.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Fair point, but i still think it was more memorable than Super Mario 64 was

  • @Monosono120, the only game Pokemon could've replaced on this list was FF7 due to the "one per genre" rule. In a decade with RPGs such as Chrono Trigger and a gazillion FFs, Pokemon's chances to win were not as high.

  • wow how can you forget quake 2, crash bandicoot :/? they shouldwe been in the top

  • @dexz0und, did you overlook the "one per genre" rule? Quake 2 had to contend with Half-Life, Counter Strike, DOOM, and GoldenEye. Crash Bandicoot had to contend with Super Metroid, Sonic, and an onslaught of epic Mario games. Neither really had much of a chance.

  • @ZhangtheGreat Ohh never thought bout that =/

  • Haha, so no Sega games? No SNES games? No best of the 16-bit wars listed?

I agree, this is more like the best of the late 1990s. The real classics came out before 1995.

  • @BlastProcessorDotCom, everyone has their own opinions. Feel free to make your own list if you're dissatisfied.

As for being mid-late 90s, perhaps you overlooked Tecmo Super Bowl (1991) and DOOM (1993). Besides, don't we expect games to get better over time? And 1998 was THE year for gaming (hence it had multiple entries).

  • Link to the Past beats OoT hands down... I'd say this list is more the best of the mid-to-late 90s...

  • I thought SimCity 3000 sucked... SimCity 2000 was the best SimCity edition ever imo

  • @applemctom

Yeah, 2000 is really "the one". It made the greatest impact. Everything after that added some more depth (which I feel is needed) but at the cost of upsetting 2k's equilibrium of simplicity and satisfying gameplay.

  • doom better than metal gear wtf..!!

  • Hey, where is Resident evil?

  • @nejikath, I don't know. You tell me =)

  • @ZhangtheGreat I think it deserves a place. It was very popular when it was released.

  • @nejikath, so were these ten games. RE was unfortunately cut, since the list could only hold ten.

  • @nejikath RE was shit when it came out fact

  • @phdotsco I know. The graphisms were shit. I think resident evil remake have better graphisms. But the one released in 1996 marked the beginning of this awesome serie.

  • @phdotsco Where you even alive when it came out? RE was revolutionary at the time.

  • where is mortal kombat!?
