  • Ian Curtis has been a greatful borderline-syndromer.

  • WUZ THIS THE FLEXI DISC???

  • "COULD'NT REST ,TILL I GOT THAT JOY DIVISION ,TATTED ON MY CHEST"

  • This might actually be Joy Division's best track. The coda at the end is one of the most chilling moments in all of rock music.

Seems like Kino does mean cinema cos Simple Minds did a song a year after this about their travels in Eastern Europe called Kant Kino (Kant I would guess being the philosopher).

  • @NormanArches

yes the kant kino is in berlin, its an independent movietheater.

but hey germany is not eastern europe, its middle europa

  • There will be a day when Simon Cowell will be listening to this through bitter tears when his bird fucks off with all his money.

  • Can please someone tell me what komakino means. I looked up for it but I didnt found anything. Maybe it´s german Koma means coma and Kino means cinema. It wouldn´t be the first german title. Licht und Blindheit was another record.

  • @skaterausberlin94 Right, I searched it up and all it says to me is "Coma Cinema," wherever that will lead us...

  • @fufufuyen

    ha ha yes.

you know i live in berlin and i could go to the kant kino and searching for some DNA of Ian on stage to crate an Ian 2.0

  • @skaterausberlin94 That might not be a good idea xD

  • From 2.46

  • a dead body can only "rest in peace". people getting all religious when someone they think is cool dies. so,

REST IN PEEEAACE IIAAN CUUURTIIIS *yaiks*

  • I guess everyone has their own interpretation of this track, and the vid doesn't really match mine - although parts of it come close. Beautiful, pared down JD - stripped down, in fact, to the bare bones - and utterly unique. There will never be another band like them. Brilliant.

  • RIP IAN CURTIS....YOUR MUSIC WILL LINGER IN OUR HEARTS 4EVER!!

  • I hate when people dislike Joy Division because they criticise Ians voice!! Continuously get stick for loving JD off about 5 of my mates whose heroes are Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney?!?!? People who dont like JD, dont understand JD. Theyre more than just music, the power of all of their songs in its on unique way is genius. The hallow rhythm of Morris' drums, the punch of Hook's bass, the melody of Sumner's guitar, and the deep captivating powerful voice of Curtis. Stands the hair on my neck!

  • @UnknownPleasures0

    thats so fucking true

  • @UnknownPleasures0 Conversely, I love it when people dislike Joy Division. Can dismiss them immediately.

  • BEEST SONG EVER!!! <3<3

  • @mrj8239 It wasn't really throwaway - as I understand it, it was meant to be a single but then Tony Wilson (God rest his soul) decided that he wanted a slice of the world's best band to be available for anyone who was interested.

The only problem with Komakino was that came on a damned-near inaudible flexi-disc ...

  • @Molesworth2K Spot on! I have that flexi-disc and the sound is atrocious.

  • what fucking ART!!! my heros

  • blah this song is like super white

  • Beautiful video! Thank you!

  • my friend HATES joy division and it pisses me off because he listens to all the bands that wouldn't have even EXISTED if it weren't for joy division. and joy division is freaking amazing - so much raw soul and passion.

  • @linusspacehead11 How old is your friend and why does he hate them?

  • @MrDataCode he's 15 and i have NO IDEA why he doesn't like them :/ he's just weird. he says he doesn't like the singer's voice, which is retarded. ian curtis effing rocks

  • How can people dislike this? what a disgrace!

    Wonderful song.

  • I love when artists like this have many songs exceeding 6 minutes because you can enjoy the song longer.

  • There`s no singer around who expresses the lyrics as good as Ian. You can feel and hear how deep he is involved in the lyrics! unbeliveable!!!

  • love this song but why is it called komakino i've never found out what it refers to

  • @Spinking11 its german for " coma cinema"

  • One of their best songs.

  • @midnitehghway An eargathm?

  • For me there is no "best" song from Joy Division. Every song has something special for me and there are not many songs I don`t like. To me it depents on my mood which song I wanna hear from them. But that`s just my opinion...

  • their best song? possibly, i love it

  • one of the most (if not the most) underated and overlooked joy division tracks, factory couldent seem to give a toss about it at the time, releasing it on a flimsy flexi disc with very limited numbers, if they had put it on a proper single it should have made indie no 1 single and maybe got to 20 or so in mainstream charts. it took eight years for a version on an album, ridiculous

  • @birdandthe You have to look at the reason why Factory was Factory to realise they very much did give a toss about these songs but just weren't interested in the commercial aspect (which eventually ruined them). Two possible reasons why songs such as this were "overlooked" - Either Martin Hannett didn't feel they fitted in to his "creation" or the band didn't know themselves how good their songs were - it was alien territory - barely a year before they'd been kicking out shitty punk songs ...

  • @mrj8239 reply part 1 logic tells me factory had to be interested in the money around the release of unknown pleasures and afterwards (though giving the impression they dident really care) i have read and seen on interviews many times, that factory had a desperate cash flow crisis with unknown pleasures which virtually paralysed factory, (go to part two)

  • @mrj8239 part two, the problem was there was large demand for unknown pleasures, but factory could only afford 10,000 copies (check that number) for the 1st release & could not print more before cash came back from retail sales, factory had no real money to cure the cash flow, because the other bands basically made sod all (without jd factory would have folded). one small point, i think you should have said two years before komakino, i believe it was recorded march or april 1980

  • @birdandthe Apologies - I had you as a crass commercialist - yes you are right, but I still have a rose-tinted view of Factory - wasting money on the likes of Crispy Ambulance, and making record sleeves out of sandpaper and ridiculously complicated materials. Gotta love 'em!

Komakino definitely sounds written between Unknown Pleasures and Closer - so it wouldn't fit on the later, plus Morris is slightly out and Ian is flat - great song 'tho

  • @SNIPZ86 thats what im saying......even early goth , such as Bauhaus ,and Desima Victima, were influenced by JD........

  • This is my favourite JD Song at the moment. Stephen´s performance is so incredible at this track. It´s unbeliveable. And what thrills me the most is the fact how Joy Division combined their raw and energetic sound with these deep, heartbreaking lyrics. They will never be reached in any category!!!! That´s just my opinion but there are a lot of people around here who says the same. But I think there should be many many more.....

  • enat minute 2:08 there is a change in the lower

    and it's great

  • Fuckin brilliant video and song!

  • the interpretation pales to the expression... at least in my eyes it does anyway

  • so the substance album is like a jd bsides? dont get it cuz i read closer was postum...???

  • I absolutely love the video you posted along with the song. So industrial and Dystopian.

  • their best song

  • Whenever i sit back and listen to this it amazes me how a man from Macclesfield so young could conjour up such beautifully deep music, gives me goose bumps!

  • @Ruutu321 then u obviously have terrible taste in music

  • awsome

  • this is one of joy divisions great songs that for some reason gets over looked. mrj8239, i agree with you these were great songs....the shadow that stands by the side of the road always reminds me of you!!

  • ...a song writen after the german berlin, kant-kino gig in 1980 - see the bootleg - look the strange atmosphere....berlin twice...wall...

  • love this song if anyone can play this on guitar reply to me with the tab for it i would be very grateful

  • I love this song!!!

  • Superb video.

  • really sorry i actually meant to like ur comment it really good.

  • Brilliant!

  • Sounds a bit like "Sister Midnight" from Iggy's 'The Idiot'.

  • Fan fucking tastic.

  • paura :-)

  • More brilliance from the boys from Manchester!! Should've been on 'Unknown Pleasures' or 'Closer', but was originally released as a flexi-disk included in an edition of NME in 1979. Great song, and Steve Morris's drumming is amazing!

    MC Gee Tee

  • I have this on a flexi disc some how. Is it a bootleg?

  • probaly not. they are not ulra-rare, but still nice.

  • AmaZING!

  • true and idk why i got marked for spam lol...

What the fuck are you on about?

    Go listen to Aqua

  • fucking prick

  • No one's mentioned that this was another throw away song from Joy Divisions catalogue, like "Dead Souls" and "Atmosphere" which were given away to an obscure Belgian label - "Komakino" along with the fantastic "Incubation" were on a free flexi disc on record shop counters in 1979 - you could take as many as you wanted in my local shop - what riches we had back then! Simon Cowell go fuck yourself!!

  • @mrj8239 LMAO simon cowell go f urself!!

  • @mrj8239 MY HERO!!!!!! I HUG YOU (GGGGRRRRREAT)!!!!

  • @mrj8239 MY HERO!!!!!! I HUG YOU (GGGGRRRRREAT)!!!!

  • @mrj8239 haha brilliant mate - still have mine - i didn't even have to buy anything... used to go to free festivals too --- remember them? my son had to regsitedr a photo to even try and get a ticket to glasto ... shite. BTW how could you put dead souls and atmosphere on a teeny tiny label in belgium - mad or wat?

  • @mrj8239

Simon Cowell is one of those that is the reason you can't dance to the radio any more.

  • @mrj8239 Simon Cowell Who??

  • Comment removed

  • I think it's my favourite joy division song... it's perfect: guitars, drums, bass, voice it's PERFECT!

  • yes he was sure a very emotional feeling persona real Cancer ,put alot of depth in his songs.

  • Only for the teutonic name.

  • Amazing, my new favorite JD song

  • a unique original band!

  • i love the bass in this song, so lush :D

  • there beat is unreal!!

  • Cancer

  • Joy Division had a pretty straightforward style I just can't describe and I love it..

  • Minimal?

  • It's kind minimalistic, and at the same time their songs are somehow apocaliptical, it brings the new and old at the same time.

I feel the intense and tragic pulse of "Historical Devir" on their songs..

It's like a recollection of "totalitarian nightmares" that floats timeless, like "1984" Orwell's.

  • Or any one of Kafka's short stories

  • pisces

  • Hi,

Komakino is a german word and means something like knock- out cinema.

    Greetings from Germany

  • Coma Cinema. :)

  • the talking heads always reminded me of a joy division on coke and antidepressants.

  • I bet most of you who like this were born in water signs.

  • ...?

  • PURE FIRE!!!

  • Aquarius.

  • why do you say that?

    I'm cancer :]

  • Someone know what the meaning of "KOMAKINO"?

  • Fuckin eh

  • so damn ahead of their time . amazing even today

  • like the blending of the unique melody and rhythm.

  • Probably my fave joy division song. Just the whole sound and the lyrics are amazing as always from Ian.

  • Comment removed

  • hypnotizing

  • yes it is

    0_o

  • This song has got to be one of their best. When I first heard it, I had an eargasm

  • Eargasm...lol

  • @midnitehghway Totally agree with you there!

  • these were one of the few songs that wouldve been on joy divisions third album you know? along with in a lonely place and ceremony

  • No, mate. Can get it on 'Substance' CD, which is all A & B sides of Joy Division singles & other stuff that didn't make it to other albums, or demo versions of album tracks, like 'These Days' & 'She's Lost Control'. Well worth buying, as is anything by this amazing band of pioneers.

  • No i know that, but this was recorded some time after closer, so i was just speculating that if ian didnt kill himself, we prob wouldve had a third album with this on it

  • Truly exceptional.

  • The drumming in this is sensational. Amazing musicianship.

  • I love watching Stephen Morris play--it's exhausting! He is criminally underrated.

  • Yes he is. No wonder he is named the Human Drum Machine.

  • thanks for this... one of the best and heaviest songs ever!!

  • I love it :D
