Oh, you sad lot of whiners with no sense of humour !!! I too adore the books, but they were written after this film.
This is a masterpiece of what we now call "camp". Major director, great photography, sterling performances...memorable lines and scenes - "If Gabriel doesn't attack us soon, we'll have to have lunch" for starters !!!
It's not like the Bond films "followed the books" either, chaps....
They could at least have gotten an actress who could speak English.
Modesty Blaise was supposed to speak perfect English with a slight undefined accent, a reflection of her globetrotting past. I don't recall any part of her backstory where she spent extended stints in Italy.
I am not even going to get into Terrance Stamp's "Cockney". Dick Van Dyke was more dignified and convincing in Mary Poppins.
