You would think that the outer layers of the companion star woud be ripped away, leaving only a core which is no longer massive enough to sustain fusion, thus forming a white dwarf. In fact, such a titanic explosion could completely disrupt the companion star, couldn't it?
dude that only happens to the lower mass stars like iour sun. the bigger one with higher mass have super novas and leave a core and the super red giant leaves a black hole
