Thankyou for putting this one up! I always wondered, what it would sound like when these two masters from the west and east would meet??? Amazing! I got to hear it and see it on YT.
@artistbobesti its a custom zeta model made for ponty, there were several made as a signature model but only a few its limited edition. You can probably find one for 4000-3000 us dollars
Can't we all get along? Both are fantastic musicians, each representing extensive training in their respective traditions (don't forget Ponty was the Paris Conservatoire's prized pupil before he dropped out to play jazz), both are great innovators, and both have touched my soul. This video is the tip of the iceberg- go listen to their other music!
Often when superpowers collide, the results are less than stellar. This video is more interesting as an encounter, not so much as a performance.
Back in the early 80s Jorge Struntz once told me L sub always wanted him to play simple chords and never really wanted him to solo as much as he liked to. Its kind of hard to believe but that's what he said. Now Jorge can get anyone he wants and call the shots.
Suppose sonof thedestroyer just can't get it right. OK, the Ponty guy is lacking the "magic" touch...yeah, right. Get your thoughts straight before you make a fool out of yourself...again.
I was really unimpressed with l sub in the first part but then I see he uses some sort of indian technique (this is the first time I heard him). He sticks out badly in the first part, but then it inverts.
Yeah, I've heard a bunch of L. Sub's work. To me it doesn't compare to the catalog of work that JLP has put together. New Country, Trans-Love Express, Stay with Me, Egocentric Molecules, etc...can't get much more feeling than that. Guess we can agree to disagree.
L.SubraManiam is all about improvising. A great CD to showcase this is one he made with S.Grappelli many years ago called Conversations - Excellant violin playing.
In order to be considered merely a competetent Karnatic musician you have to be able to improvise for periods of up to an hour or even longer in 72 different scales (using micro-tones within those scales) and108 rhythms (there's also a lot of improvising at no set tempo utilised). Sub's used plenty of other scales and time signatures too. He's a phenomenal improviser and widely considered the greatest violin master ever of Karnatic music .
Subramaniam is considered one of the best for sure, but there's no such thing as the "greatest". There are plenty of superb violinists in INdia. Look up, Lalgudi Jayaraman (a prolific composer as well), MS gopalakrishnan, V V subramanyam and so on, these are just a few of the best. Most westerners know L subramaniam due to his many collaborative performances and recordings.
I'm not claiming to be qualified to judge who, if anyone, deserves the monicker of "greatest" Indian violinst; that's why I say "widely considered": I'm referring to what seems to be a widely held view in Indian classical music circles. I bought almost all of my recordings of Subramanium in India, and that was where I got this impression. There are lots of frighteningly brilliant violinsts there, but I understand Subramaniam's regarded as a great innovator, and the most influential player.
I been quite happy present to Doctor L.Subramaniam ancient russian fiddle of XV century for his Global Collection of bowed instruments in Moscow 1988 y.
About Carnatic Music, it is a diferent analysis about the same phenomenon. You talk about music. Music is the art of the muses. If the music refers about muses, the music refers about spiritual forms of the human observation. When a human talks about spiritual issues, it´s not science yet (maybe someday).
I wrote:"With Ponty I listen pure science + creativity. I prefer it."... Did I wrote "music"?... No.
You wrote: "Ponty is very good. But he still lacks that spiritual essence that Subramaniam has"... Did you wrote "spiritual"?... Yes. Technically, you are not talking about science and I am not talking about music. Do an inference if you want to see if it is valid (it is =) )
oops; yes...but in this case it applies to both...but in many situations it might be an important mistake. I SHOULD know better having seen L.Shankar many time, but yes I do know his brother too. My bad.

What i mean is in the first section that jlp wrote l sub seems really uncomfortable, but in the second carnatic section jlp is blatantly european.
They each have their own spheres and they're both excellent, lets leave it at that.

In my opinion he is the ultimate violinist.

L. Sub is technically sound, but it's obvious he can't improvise like JLP.

Ponty, of course, is also a master of his style.

having said that, I take your point about no-one being the "greatest" - music shouldn't be about competition.

Ponty is very good. But he still lacks that spiritual essence that Subramaniam has.

They do not have the same culture, chakras are not a priority on the occidental culture.
jcheattai 3 years ago
Mr. Ponty looked a little flustered there... a little flustered. He can't open the chakras like Dr. L can.

Me thinks you read too much into it! Flustered??? He was just fiddling around. No pun intended.

With Ponty I just hear Licks; with L. Shankar it's pure music.

Don't mean to fault-find; but it is in fact L. Subramaniam, L.Shankar's elder brother. Thanks.
