I don't think it's horrid... but to say that it pales in comparison to Crenshaw's original is a huge understatement. Perhaps the worst thing is that they played it straight up within their modern idiom and over-produced it instead of making a version that is truly their own - that seems to be the Cardinal Sin of cover tunes for the last 20 years.
Gordon has the rockabilly stuff going for him. Crenshaw is okay, but I don't think he's got a boogey in his body to do it well. This version would be a bit easier if it had a different singer. The instrumentals are a bit slower, but their activity shifts things around, not necessarily bad, or good... But eh.. I guess if you're going for a version more catered towards a lifetime special, this would be an excellent spot for it.
So cheesy and synthetic it's rather good, but, no, of course not as good as MC's on his album or Gordon's--the best version of which was taken down. Too bad.
I agree but at least he must have got a decent royalty cheque out of this. I never understood why his versions of his songs weren't bigger hits. Nearly 30 years on I'm still listening to them.
OMG I DIDN'T KNOW THIS WAS A REAL SONG!!! The ONLY time I've ever heard this song was on the TV show Fame when I was about 16!!! I've never heard it anywhere else since!!!!!!!!!!!
marshall crenshaw wrote the song for Robert Gordon. He also has is own recordings of it. Check out their performances to really see how it should be sone.
I've loved all the incarnations of this song. It's interesting it was the only major hit Crenshaw wrote. I remember he played Buddy Holly in the movie La Bamba. The song was written by Crenshaw for Robert Gordon. I like the way it fits any kind of production you want to give it. It's great rockabilly yet this is a classic example of how good it sounds when it's kicked up a notch. The video clips are also perfectly aligned with the music ..... gives it a great feel visually.
Robert Gordon does it the best. Crenshaw also does the song very nicely and quite differently from Gordon. This is nice but loses the rockabilly attitude that Gordon gives it.
Buddy Holly did not write this song. Marshall Crenshaw wrote the song. Marshall Crenshaw played Buddy Holly in La Bamba and has often been compared to the 1950s rocker.
this song is roiginally by the late great Buddy Holly and then was covered by the amazing Marshall Crenshaw. No idea who this band is but they do it up pretty well now who are these people in the video?
This is from the late TV series "The Lost World" drawn from Conan Doyle's novel about, well, a lost world full of dinosaurs. There is a blond sex kitten jungle girl who is a brat but I like Marguerite better.
Doesn't have the punch of Crenshaws. Yuk......

@hockeylifer1962 You are incorrect. Gordon covered Creshaw's song. These things are not hard validate. Try it.

@hockeylifer1962 . Yes, but Crenshaw wrote it. Look it up.

Oh, ouch. You just don't mess with Marshall Crenshaw's stuff. He's the single best musician who somehow never made it big.

Love this version and I am a huge Marshal Crenshaw fan. The horns and background singers make this song so much deeper in sound.

A lot of purists would stick with the Gordon or Crenshaw versions of this song.
I admit I was one of them. But this version has its charm.
Thanks for the upload.

This is a great song, no matter who sings it. While this version doesn't bring anything new to the original, it's still a nice version.

this is crap in compairison to Crenshaws version
laid07 3 years ago 8
Wrong... This is WORSE than "crap" next to Crenshaw's version. Some songs just shouldn't be covered; This song is a case in point.
It takes heart to do this song justice. These idiots..? just don't have it.
