The strength of an army is not based on the number of its troops, but on military equipment. And in this field, Turkey is far behind GB, France or Germany. Its not even sure if they could invade Greece successfully. Turkey has just regional influence and are heavily depended on the politics of the great neighbours they have. Even before it declared its independence Turkey did all it could do to make the relations between the two communities bad, see the 1955 Progrom in Constantinople. After the independence, Turkey pressured for a ridiculous constitution in the island that could simple not work so the two communities would end up fighting. Greek authorities want Turkey to join the EU because of security reasons (Turkey is still the enemy number one, althoug a war is very unrealistic) and of economic reasons (trade ways are very short etc.). BUT that does not mean, that the greek people want them to join.

Turkey has an economic boom at the moment, but this shouldnt be overestimated. Without the investments of foreign governments, they couldnt do anything. Turkey is not to compare with states like India, China or Brazil. Yes, they get more political influece, but their possibilities are very restricted. They cant survive alone without leaning on one side, and the only possibilites are Russia or the E.U.. As for its army: They have the second largest army, but not the second strongest.

The strength of an army is not based on the number of its troops, but on military equipment. And in this field, Turkey is far behind GB, France or Germany. Its not even sure if they could invade Greece successfully. Turkey has just regional influence and are heavily depended on the politics of the great neighbours they have. They just need to choose one side. Oh... and if they come to the funny idea of a Turan union with the other turks, they would be crushed by China and Russia.

Even before it declared its independence Turkey did all it could do to make the relations between the two communities bad, see the 1955 Progrom in Constantinople. After the independence, Turkey pressured for a ridiculous constitution in the island that could simple not work so the two communities would end up fighting. In 1963 they even bombed the island and attempted to invade. For the actual invasion they used the coup d'etat as pretext.

Turkish-Cypriots had been treated as 2nd class citizens by Greek-Cypriots since the 1950's! Hundreds of Turks disappeared & were later found murdered in mass graves!
