  • I am still amazed by the super 8mm quality. It is so sharp, and is properly exposed very well. I wonder what light meter you used, was it the internal camera. I can tell a lot of thought was used to capture the shots. It only shows what hard work, dedication, and the right knowledge can provide. One great film shot in super 8mm. I suprised this didn't get any headlines. What was the film about? It was great though.

  • Nice visual effects. It's too long and I admit I skimmed it. It's great to show what Super 8 can do and it gives a great sense of place. I have been screening way too many home movies,,,

  • GREAT looking footage and well edited! I don't think it's cut to long at all. It's refreshing to see some super 8mm posts that last longer than 2 and 1/2 minutes. lol

Pro8mm offers their own stocks cut from both Kodak and Fuji. 500 speed, No ASA and six stops of latitude looks great. Will be posting some early next month. Great work. Take care.

  • I really hate to sound like a cynic, but I have a difficult time believing this is 8mm film. The shots, especially the ones at night time came out unusually crisp and clear. Secondly, this seems to have been filmed with a wide lense, and to my knowledge, 8mm doesn't shoot wide. So, either this isn't 8mm or there is some vital piece of information I'm missing out on, and I certainly don't claim to be an expert. Care to elaborate on your process? What kind of camera did you use?

  • I can't wait to use my Super 8 camera, amazing capture my friend, the people should upload the vids with a higher quality, cheers

  • Awesome work, dude. You are an inspiration

  • Really amazing. I can't ever get really clean night time exteriors. Did you shoot with high speed (500T) negative?

  • To call this "exceptional" might be an understatement (and there is NOTHING wrong with your music choices; on the contrary, in fact). This piece only proves that the quality people were used to from 8mm & Super8 was more a result of the average equipment usually used (plus the lack of knowledge/talent on the user) rather than the format itself. KUDOS, sir! Beautiful stuff!

  • super 8 clip,,love the rich color tones,,how did you get such rich color on your film?beautifully done,,,,

  • Amazing!!!! Love it!!!!

  • This is amazing stuff and a rare example of how awsome super 8 can look, or is supposed to look. Excellent colors and density! Who did the transfer? what stocks?

  • holy shit - that's the cleanest super8 i've ever seen. i could only imagine what you'd do on 35mm :)

  • Very cinematic & you have a great talent but not necessarily an ear for music & so I am somewhat bored. Music matters so much. It would be nice to hear some alternative indie folk or (even classic rock and roll that is played too much). I am not anywhere near your equal as visual virtuoso but is it cruel to mention need of a "musical adviser" ? Less commercial dance pieces in particular. Great shots sorry I don't mean to take one at you but this is how I feel & just 1 opinion from a jerk.

  • @11xzxzxz

sorry for the musical offence...as jack nicolson said in that one flew over film...

    at least i tried godamit...

if kodak ever pay for the remake i will be sure to contact you for some dire straits tracks advice : )

  • @antiochus66 I would not ad dire straits and anyway one non-lover of your music taste will mean nothing or propel you to even greater fame and glory. Good luck and you don't need it.

  • @11xzxzxz

you mentioned being bored...if you read the info below the film it states that it could be cut down...

the point is this is to provide proof that this 1966 home movie format can look good..

it is a kind of long test clip..a technical exercise a refute to the piss poor usual super 8 that is seen in music videos and commercials.

it is not an essay statement in my musical taste i think it still kind of works..

  • @antiochus66 OK fair enough a

  • @antiochus66 I have no clue what 11xzxzxz is talking about, I was not bored at all and the music fit very well. It was entertaining on every level possible. Great job, greetings from Germany.

  • @11xzxzxz you are fucking every fucking where. i like that.

  • @MsPsychobunny You mean ubiquitous? Like Awesome Wells the deceased actor. And if you notice I am everywhere you must be too but how come you are not with me by my side right now! It's lonely old night then I put my arms around ..

  • @11xzxzxz i tell you what, when you cut a showreel that shows the expertise and talent this does, THEN you can come and show off your superior music taste like a proud little puppy. Until then stop being a wanker.

    a

The best super 8 reel ive seen, one of the best reels in general ive seen, every now and again you forget this format still exists, stuff like this makes me wanna get out there and shoot the hell out of it ! Thanks for sharing !

  • @blowaraspberry The best critics usually can't do but their opinions are vital and yours in vile. Nice snippin'. That rifle in your hand felt reassurin' but your opinions are borin' But when your first shot hit the docks I saw it comin' But I raised my rifle to my eye Never stopped to wonder why Then I saw black And my face splashed in the sky. Shelter me from your powder and the your finger. Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger Just think of me as one you'd never figured..
  • This is A class

  • Excellent, this is really really good stuff, Some top talent here man! Thanks for sending the link. Need to see more, can you send some on DVD so I can consider for future Kino nights?

  • very good shooting !

    i use a nizo pro

did you use steady cam or something like that

if yes what did you use

have you cut the picture in a software ?

i really like to get a professional result like your shooting

    thanks

  • WTF!?!? you know MAXWELL???? 5:23?

  • yes...he used to be a mate of mine...we both used to have mad hair : )

one of the best people i ever worked with a real gentlemen and a great spirit...

  • Loved this!

  • wow, really great cinematography. loved watching this. is there such a thing as a professional super 8 cam? i've never seen 8mm look this good.

  • The reason 99% of Super 8 movies blow (digital as well) is because they didnt do what you did/have: use stabilizers, tripods, dolly, etc. All that jiggling/shaking around in most S8 movies just screams 'beginner'. You let the subject move, not you! If you move, invest in a stabilizer(merlin etc). Also, there is stabilization software to take a lot of the shaking/vibrations out of movies. Watch your work improve dramatically.

  • gut videos

    vivan las vegas

    viva orzon wells

  • This is simply stunning! I can't even describe how beautiful it is. I could never have imagined super 8 could look this good. I wish I could do something like it!

  • @hayhoobroon

     ta very much like..

trying to do my bit since kodak do not give a damn.

  • I've been on a medication for 14 months that caused me to lose a lot of emotional connection and feeling to any art. This video was beautiful me, and it brought back something I've missed dearly for some time.

  • @holesa1e

    thanks for that.

life and people can stink sometimes but as albert finney once said don't let the bastards grind you down : )

  • wow, pretty amazing stuff.

  • Wow. I have to say, that is some of the sharpest, richest, most gorgeous super8 footage I've ever seen. On par with Oliver Stone's in Natural Born Killers. Would you mind telling me which camera and film you used. Did you get it scanned or professionaly telecined, or home telecine? Did you use any lighting, other than ambient? Thanks, and great work!

  • Mate, this is some of the finest 8mm footage I have ever seen! It was such a pleasure to watch this. Please keep uploading fine content like this. There are many people out there who appreciate it!!!

  • Film as pure quality

  • Some of it looks like Super 8, some of it does not. I doubt that ALL of it is Super 8, no matter what anyone says. No matter what.

  • how about what the guy that shot it says thats me...

IT IS ALL SUPER 8 ALL SHOT BY ME...

this has been uploaded to promote the format i am not sponsored by kodak,i have never got any work from this being up here, not made a penny.

i could say what makes you an expert,if your s8 looks rough practice you never know you may even do better stuff than this.

s8 is easy you put the film in press the button when you here a funny noise point the camera.

  • @antiochus66, hey, I'm all for promoting the format. I shot many a Super-8 film -- many years ago. Depending on how it is used, it can look great. I suppose some of the footage that looks like 16mm perhaps looks that way because the image is moving very quickly (harder to see the grain).

  • the quality has nothing to do with the speed, the cut of the edit etc.

simply i was quite good with film choice and technique at the time.

watching this on digital betacam in a million dollar edit suite with the music cranked up is quite a thing, this looks very poor by comparison.

my intentions were to use the format as a photographic tool, the home movies title on the front is a piss take as i have very little bad grainy out of focus footage in this.

  • @antiochus66, actually it does have to do with the speed, depending on how it is used and at what point in the production process. Whatever.

  • in an edit suite on freeze frame the images look good..it is nothing to do with the speed of the edit on you tube.

if you showed me some of your outstanding work i would treat your comments with more respect..

  • the first song, who is it. And this is really good stuff.

  • @bradkali Leftfield - Open Up

  • What camera are you using to get the different frame rates? Looks like some stuff was shot at 4fps, and some time lapse was 1 sec (or so) exposure times? Very well done

  • Unbelievable quality and editing too.

I'm learning film making and really intrigued by film (stock).

Being born in the digital era has kept me digital but Film has just recently caught my eye and now i'm getting into film photography and shooting a film on film - 8 and 16 and then 35.

Can you tell me more about 8mm and how you've made it look so beautiful?

  • whoa. I don't wanna insult but I find it very hard to believe this is all super 8. Some of it definatly is but it looks like most of it is 16mm, theres literally no grain whatsoever. If this is how kodachrome was, then holy shit kodak needs to start making it again

  • every super 8 film type was used including the dead kodak 4x and kodachrome...

i will take your comment as praise,it is all super 8.

i have no reason to lie it is not like i am making money from youtube with viewing fees.

kodak said that ektachrome was close enough to kodachrome not to matter : )

i am not sure how they would know that cos they never shot it themselves..

  • Loved it! How the heck is the quality so good? What colour film stock is that in the city- kodachrome?

  • lovely kodachrome can you believe it is dead.

kodak said ektachrome was a good alternative, idiots.

all the kodak films are used here,

the consistent factor in all of this was i was looking through the lens and filming.

so you could say the quality is good cos i used to be quite good : )

  • Ya when kodachrome was discontinued Super 8 pretty much died with it. Im not a huge fan of ektachrome Id rather use Plus-X and give it an oldschool feel.

And what do you mean USED to be good? Keep at it.

PS. I got a new Super 8mm experimental short film in postproduction right now, i think your gonna like it...

  • Hi Alan!

  • what camera did you use and what film? Thanks

  • Hi again mate. I actually cant get over how good this is. It is also superbly editied. Is there anywhere I can see this footage in better quality? Have you worked with 16mm/35mm?

Is it possible to list the film stocks you used in the different scenes?

    Awsome

    tbip2001

  • that's some of the best S8 footage I've seen... what stock did you use for the model shots at around 7 minutes?

  • the greatest kodak film stock, the film that defined the company.the stock that along with 3 strip technicolor changed the world from black and white to glorious colour.

and when kodak killed kodachrome, they killed part of themselves.

in medieval societies the term the king is dead long live the king was an oft used term.

kodak is now a digital imaging company : )

but to me they seem to be a company that just rebadges products from china.

kodachrome, kodak made it but did not invent it.

  • I have an old Super 8, it's solid metal and heavier than it looks. I need a new wind-up crank and the shutter is stuck so I can't use it, but one day I'm going to get it fixed.

  • sounds like a russian thing.

probably best used as a door stop or book prop upper : )

  • @TheSolitaryPoet I'd simply buy another one, they are dirt cheap on eBay.

  • Great work!!!

  • What model was the camera for this? In some places, I could really see Ektachrome S8 coloring, but in many places, it was not present. Just wondering how the S8 you have performed so well in so many different lighting conditions.

  • ektachrome is inferior in every way to kodachrome..

maybe 2 shots in total on ektachrome..a lot on s8 neg and all the other stocks, time lapse stuff in las vegas is kodachrome.

i have all the great s8 cameras beaulieu,nizo,bauer,nikon..etc.

super 8 performed well cos i used to know what i was doing with the technology.

the camera and the film are important but it as nothing without skill and understanding what you can achieve..

  • Yeah, achieving the vivid colors makes more sense when you say Kodachrome. The reason I was asking about the camera is because I was curious about your frame rates. Some of the footage looked as though it was shot above 16-18fps. Most S8 cameras will not shoot above that. If this is all S8 like you say, it's some of the best S8 stuff I've seen. Nice work.

  • 24 or 25fps normal filming speed...

  • nice work

  • is this your material i dont ever wanna leave home

  • This was all shot on S8? Negative Stock/Rversal? It looks absolutely gorgeous. I would imagine this telecine job was pricey.

    Chris

  • 10 year old rank cintel mk2 and 12 year old bts bosch machine...

not new telecine technology, mainly photographic luck and and the odd day of orson welles like visual genius : )

  • What filmstock did you use. I am talking to a friend about shooting a music video and I have seen some good looking footage on Super 8. I have 16mm and S8mm gear, both have rock steady gates and good glass. I shot a test role, and it looks awesome projected. 64T seems to have gotten tighter grain structure since it came out, but I here negative stock is even tighter.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • Very nice, I still love using my S8 camera, though you get some funny looks from people here in London if you do!

I always think it is a such pitty that modern compression needed to view things over the internet (e.g. low ish bitrates) really spoils the beautiful look of the grain in the image and can make a S8 shot look more like Hi8. I just wish more people could see the beauty of a good S8 shot on a projector.

  • Absolutely sensational!!!!!!!!!!

  • TOP!

  • The movement you've captured on film was a great piece of art work!! loved it.

  • hi! what kind od camera did u used for this one, the model?

  • a nizo a canon a beaulieu a bauer a leicina a nikon super 8 cameras.

  • bet bog dive wasnt too happy about that. so ernie isnt available to film then because i needed a hand filming a midget fight next week and wanted to go super 8 tastic on its ass

  • super 8 master sensi big ern is not around.

before he was burnt he trained me grasshopper style, in the mystical powerful oriental art of putting film in a camera, pressing the button and waving it around in the general direction of the action.

    so maybe i could help.

    send me a pm.

  • who the fuck is ernie kovac ??/!! i thought your name was alan doyle ! that isnt skegness!

  • ernie tragically did not make it to skegness,it was a dream a fantasy wonderland in his confused minds.

when he was filming semi naked women in the maldives, the bahamas, newyork or las vegas, lovely skeggieness was always in his minds eyes.

i took his ashes for a day trip last week.even put some of his dust in a salt cellar in big daves fish and chip shop.

  • this is a great video, awesome editing and i loveee the super 8 film

  • thanks..

i cannot pass on the message to uncle cos he passed on earns now in an urn, kind of ironic don't you think..

but he sure did like filming las vegas pole dancers.

  • Great job!

  • its so amazing how super 8 film catches more colour than digital...it looks alive and brilliant.

  • I wish more people understood that. Super 8 and film as a whole captures color in a way digital can't

  • super 8 filumm is awesome with that 16 x 9 format, introduced during President Mondale's administration.

  • he he no actually i dont, and its not very often i post comments! i know how u feel, i am starting out to be a photographer and i am also working on a film at the moment (unpaid) i know of many people who would love your work, the only trouble is now nobody is paying for such talent. ( with the current work climate).. continue as your work is amazing :)

  • One of the best videos I have watched on youtube, talented and so glad u shared this with us! excellent!

  • i bet you say that to all the super talented unemployed manic depressive visualists on utube.

if you need me 2 film your wedding or a holiday in bali or the maldives,i will do you a special rate for your kind words...thanks : )

  • am favouriting this

you said you own 30 s8 cameras. do you have the canon 1014xls? if so, do you have an opinion on it?

and if you don't shoot much nowadays what do you do? wasted talent

  • well yeah, actulally more like darius khondji on MBBN

  • Hello...

    Beautiful film!

How was this transferred and who did the transfer?

    Thanks

  • the companies do not exist anymore..

the machine was a really old phillips bts quadra 444.

    a great machine.

and some stuff on a cintel mk3.

standard def with ultrasonic cleaned film.

my grading and good old shooting technique.

  • Comment removed

  • absolutely incredible!

  • Oh, man. Thanks a lot.

I just asked because I will shoot a short movie soon with a lot of night scenes and yours are great.

Thanks again and congratulations for your job. Very cool.

  • What film stock did you used in the night scenes? Do you remember the fps and diaphragm settings?

  • it was a long time ago amigo i am getting kind of old..to rememember such foolishnessnessness.

the film was kodachrome kind of shows how handy i used to be...

    1 picture every 2 secs... f2.8

  • This is so sick. Honestly, the Vegas shots are so unique. Vegas in the rain is rare and to have captured two totally forms of emotion, the fast, electric buzz and the slower, somber haze, it's just magnificent.

I was a film student who turned to teaching but I intend on traveling to Europe to recapture my creative flair. What S8 should I invest in? Would you recommend any other non DV camera/film that's cheap that would creative a similar aesthetic style?

    Cheers

    Brook

  • thanks a man of great taste.

it was difficult as vegas is a shadow of it's former self,in my head i had all this classic neon but a lot of it has been scrapped or put in neon dump in the town.

information overload was still a big problem,so i limited myself to 3 or 4 50ft rolls around 12 mins of footage.

i tried to make every shot count .

    andec is good for processing.

nikon, canon, bauer nizo, leicina and beulieu are the great names in s8.

standard 16mm is also cool, cheaper than super 16.

  • Beau(lieu)tiful.

    pity it is letterboxed.

  • absolutely stunning, I've never seen filmaking quite like this before, and I was mezmorized by the lights and sounds of this fantastic piece of work, this is very very beautiful, continue this work, its incrediblle to be dead honest, you definately nailed average filmaking, congratulations on this magnificent piece of work mate, once again, 5 stars, a definite favorite of mine, good luck, and keep up the good work.

  • thanks very much...

i do not really shoot much nowadays...

my roll seems to be giving people ideas for mood clips etc.

i did used to be pretty good though.

you clearly have very good taste, unlike most people.

the las vegas stuff was shot on 3 x 50ft rolls of film and i think i got something special...

  • pretty good. i just loaded my first roll of film today. tomorrow we're shooting for the first time. starting with standard 8 though. i'm sure i'll be asking advice. im sure you have plenty to give

  • You are an artist! ... and with this footage you have shown the world what an artist can do with Super-8. Unfortunately, it only tends to make it even more heartbreaking that K-40 ( Kodachrome ) no longer exists. And you are right about the quality of the cartridges: down the tubes. it's a damn shame. I urge you to try some Fuji 50D Velvia in Super-8 while it is still available! It's a great stock! ... not K-40 ... but great!

  • thanks very much.

i think i was the first person in the world to use fuji velvia in super 8, 10 years ago.

velvia is special, and fuji i think have a world beating range of reversal films.

i think why i gave up on super 8 was kodak, even in the good times never attempted to promote. and seemed happy to revel in the low fi crap quality of the format, even the technical guys had know concept of how good it good be.

  • Great looking stuff.

I would love to put your work into the next Super 8 Side Show. Its an annual fest for all us S8 enthusiasts. How can I get you to submit some of it?

  • HOLY CRAP! This is the BEST Super8 footage I have EVER seen. And I've seen a LOT!

  • thanks...

actually i lied it is in fact 70mm, i mean standard 8 anyway it might of been shot on vhs or was it u-matic.

i am very proud of the las vegas puddles.

i had 10 mins, 2 x 50ft rolls of s8 and an angry bbc producer wanting to go to bed.

    i nailed those shots.

    cheers.

  • good work :)

  • Whoa. This was really good. Loved the time lapses at the beginning. The reflection shots were amazing, too. I'm borrowing a beaulieu 4008 and i'm excited to use it. I only have 2 rolls of ektachrome 64t, which is a bummer, or well... Those time lapses in the beginning are 2fps, correct? Reminds me so much of under cranking on the HVX200...

  • wooa the water reflection look very wong kar waish!!

    AMAZING

  • that would be the other doyle

cinematographer christopher doyle who shoots wong kar-wai's films

  • nice editing nothing looks like film though, DV with some magic bullet plugins but super 8 - I just don't see it, I'm sure it is but just doesn't look like it, who's music is that playing on your footage we can't use for mood clips ?nice of them to give you permission to use it, maybe they could use your footage for mood clips ?

  • not sure what you are saying...

it is super 8,i will take the i do not see it as s8 as a compliment.

i had a simple idea attempt to push the technology as far as possible.

treat this old technology with respect.

the slow music track in las vegas is mark hollis.

  • It's nice to see some super 8 footage that doesn't look like crap. I was starting to think it was impossible for it to look good!

  • damned with faint praise, glad to see my stuff is the best of a bad bunch.

it is super 8 not 70mm,it is an amateur film format from 1966.

it has a look that is still relevant.

  • Amazin footage!

  • Definitely the best super8 footage I have ever seen. Amazing kodachrome at 7 minutes. Damn good work.

  • thanks..

well done your the only person to notice the kodachrome at 7mins,it helped that the girl was wet and stunning.

funny thing is this stuff has never really got me any work..people in the film industry are happy to use my stuff for reference.or ideas.

what is interesting is a lot of the time the pro shot stuff stinks,it is the amateurs that do good work.

kodachrome is legendary,a very big mistake by kodak to stop making it...the replacement ektachrome is not good enough.

  • Well I only knew it was kodachrome based on your replies to other comments, but the difference between that footage and the other footage was very distinct. Too bad it hasn't gotten you any work because that is really great quality work. It's what professional should be.

  • damn you have an eye for the visuals! what kind of camera are you filming on?

  • i have 30 cameras..the best are the beaulieu, leicina and the nizo pro

  • thank you for posting it as you inspired me to drop $150 on a super 8 cam last night, sweet deal because it already had the widescreen gate modification done. I come from the world of still photography, where just as in the super 8 world it seems 98% is horrible. The work you have done is AMAZING and you've set the benchmark for me to achieve, I can see already how a lot of my knowledge from still will bleed over into moving film. Very excited!! Thanks again, this video has really made my week!

  • i bro i no its you

  • Now also bought some 'fresh' Wittnerchrome 40T. Would be amazing if it would yield the same characteristics as the parts of your video I mentioned. Was there any special technique to get this result? Color timing?

  • Just one word: wow!

The shoot with the model at 07:00 is also Super8? No double-8? What stock was that? The clarity and color fidelity are simply awesome...

  • the opening timelapse in las vegas is kodachrome.

the girl at 7 mins is kodachrome.

it was the best super 8 film stock, a shame kodak did not and still do nothing to promote this great format.

    thanks

  • Brilliant...

I just purchased a Canon 814 and quit some old Kodachrome stock. Using it in a theatre play as visuals. In particular a sequence about the malleability of memory. A group of people reflecting on a summer in '74. This stock is also from that year. Would be funny to see how 'malleable' the medium itself is also. Really anxious to see what'll come out of it.

  • Stunning footage! May I ask you a few questions? I am a film student in London planning a short on Vision 2 200t on a Nizo 651Macro:

    1. Great depth of field on the man speaking in b/w at 5:50min. What camera did you use? Did you use interchangeable lenses? Can i achieve look with my Nizo?

Same thing with the wome in the water, great depth o/f. What cam did you use and what lense?

    2. Your footage has almost no scratches and runs smooth, how do you achieve that?

    Thanks so much!

  • zoom in on your lens,to get narrow focus.

    the nizo is good.

clean cos i get my stuff ultrasonic cleaned by pro's.

and i get a proper telecine look out for names like

ursa diamond, phillips, bosch and bts and the spirit.

  • With video coming up and film going down, a lot of people get into super 8 in sort of a hobbyist vein and it's hard to come across professional level shooting like this these days. I think this is a great video for people interested in shooting super 8 to see because it shows what amazingly clear, beautiful moving pictures the format is capable of producing when you put in the full amount of work to shoot it.

  • That is astonishing! You are very talented

    tbip2001

  • it's not me it is just the camera i put the special magic film in,press the button and the motor goes brrrrrrrrrr.

    anyone can do it !

    thanks

  • What camera(s) was used for these sequences?

    Thanks

  • love the video....i just bought two ektachrome cartridges and was looking for some inspiration....i dont wanna waste it....expensive stuff these days.

  • WOW! AMAZING! Great work!! I love the look and feel of 8mm film! I do agree with you about Kodak and them making more film stocks for 8mm. I love the style of this reel and colors are fantastic! I hope that 8mm will make a come back someday!! Thanks for sharing man!

  • This looks beautiful, if i didnt know i twas super 8 i would think it was 16mm or something. I'm a film student and iv'e ben wanting to start to get away from DV and dabble in film. What kind of stock did you use in Los vegas? (that was los vegas right?) and what about with the bearded guy infront of the fountan and the river? that looks amazeing, i love the depth of field.

  • las vegas, some of it was kodachrome, which is not made anymore... and 200asa negative surveilance film, which is not made anymore...but you can get vision 200 which is ok.

the man with the beard was legendary underwater film pioneer hans hass..an amazing man..it was filmed in austria on 4x 400asa film which kodak do not make anymore. only tri x.

i think you can see a theme here, hey thats a good stock let's cancel it.

  • Wow..you did the sparklehorse video in Sup 8.....thanks for your work........

  • Our family has super 8 &16mm homemovies. From 50s-80s.The films were copied to VHS first. After a few years we copied them to DVD.The VHS wore out and deteriated. The Grand kids scratched the DVD.I am slowly having them copied to BLU-RAY.

The movies look better every time. What ever comes next will copy it to that. The U-MATIC

VHS<BETA and Hi 8 tapes our family shot.Have faded or have massive amounts of drop outs and a lot is lost forever.

But if you shoot film definitely take it to a pro lab

  • Ive only been using s8 for a few years my stuff is getting better but you would put me to shame. Your a hands down pro, Best super 8 ever and I know of a guy that got a 16k grant to show off super 8 and he cant touch your work.

    google "halogenorous super 8 project"

  • yes...i know the chap he is a nice guy..from chile.

i think he is very good..but he uses pro 8 company in la and they are in it for the money..so cut a lot of corners..

having said that kodaks quality is down the pan..

look at the latest vision 500asa stock it should be better than my las vegas shots...

    thanks for your kind words.

  • Beautiful imagery!

I must ask -- Where was your telecine done and what kind of equipment was used to produce such high quality transfers?

  • thanks...

as it said it was done on cintel equipment..quite an old machine..it is all to do with a good shooter..use kodak product and get the film cleaned and go to a proper post company..this stuff was done at many post houses in london..i have sync sound nizo and canon and bauer cameras..

i think this stands up quite well..

  • This is definitely strange for me. I haven't seen such a good looking Super 8 film at at all. Really good work, thanks for the upload.

  • hi, mysterious viewers alan doyle here.

a lot of this stuff was filmed with kodak surveillance film.

this was just 5293 negative film in s8 . it was replaced with vision 1 then vision2 200asa

so what we have here is 10 year old generation film stock and a 12 year old telecine machine.

now i do not shoot much s8 any more..but i think it is interesting how come with state of the art new film stock and million dollar super modern telecines .

how i am not seeing much of an improvement..in quality.

  • Hey Alan, I am agree with you. Recently,I saw some people transferred S-8mm Vision 3, none of them are as well as yours.I am so confused, how come there are huge differences between your old s-8mm clips and new stuff. The cameras are alomost the same, maybe the processing,or the TC? I just don't get it.

  • you say you do not understand.

why this stuff looks like it does.

    i have been shooting s8 since 1984

if i get a leica stills camera, will i be able to take stills images as good as Henri Cartier Bresson no.

gear is just gear. until put into the hands of someone that knows what they are doing and understands in super 8s case all the major weak links.

the product is getting worse not better.a waste of time with vision 2 and 3 if your using cheaper and cheaper components in the cartridge.

  • kodak need to sort out the cartridge quality control..

super 8 is now more unsteady than it was years ago..

with most people setting shootings standards so low it is no surprise, that companies financially benefit from super 8.

when it looks like crap they can just say well this is the unique look of the format.

  • I recommend if anyone has any movie footage of

family.Or If you are a Indie Filmmaker. That you take it to a really good duplicating facility. Some rip

offs project to a white card and camcorder of it.

Others have antique Flying Spot Scanners.

Or have a attached lens to a projector or a mirror prism.Use a transfer house that does the copying for TV stations etc.You will see all the detail of your original film.

Who cares if it costs more. These are valuable

    memories of family and times.

  • the projector style systems are poor...

even the flashscan is noisy which at 25 thousand dollars, seems a little high...

cintel machines are the best...mk3...ursa gold and diamond..

    the millenium...

bts..bosch/phillips machines are the great as well.

  • awesome footage and editing.

i was wondering...what is the name of the song at the beginning?

  • open up by leftfield with johnny rotten on vocals..

    cheers

  • Love the timelapse, but have only seen this done with a nizo since you can keep the shutter speed super slow. Is that what you used for these shots? Nizo?

  • no..

done on 2 cameras bauer a508 and a wacky timelapse camera called a kodak analyst super 8..it was designed in the 1970s for us banks and government buildings..

  • at 9:00, did u use a Super 8mm steady-cam?I saw a lot of people shaked too much when they moved the body.

  • yes i have steadicam and video assist with a transmitter package..

  • Some footages look like 16mm very much.

  • Do u mind tell me where did you transfer your amazing footage to HD? Did u do any color correction in the post? So great!!!!!!!

  • this is all shot on normal super 8 film..

every kodak s8 film is used in this clip..

nothing special just tried to do my best.

just practice and do not disrespect your camera, even if it cost 10 dollars and is made of plastic.film is expensive think about your shots before pressing the trigger,it is a camera not a water pistol..cheers

  • Good advice antiochus66.I work alot with small indie filmmakers. Most of the people I work with are young and recent grads.Being (they) mostly trained in digital they occasionally dapple in film. When they complain about film costs.I tell them to make sure their actors rehearse and they plan better.

Unfortunately They still shoot the same ratio as mini DV at 30+ to 1.Most of these people do not know how I use to get things in the can at 6-8 to 1 .

  • Oh my this is NICE!!

I am trying very hard to get into making super 8 films, I just bought a camera and I am studying film like crazy. My question is...what was this all filmed on?! Is this or any of this super 8 film?! If so I am more impressed than any other super 8 footage i have ever seen. But im guessing its higher quality film. Im still learning about film and making movies all together so any advice or info would be great. Let me know what kind of film this is on and any details thanks!
