Jackson, while undoubtedly eccentric (and a hard-core religious zealot) actually was a brilliant leader and strategist, and personally brave to the point of fool-hardiness. At First Manassas (Bull Run) he did indeed hold his Virginians steady in the face of heavy Union fire and pressure until Johnston arrived, and thus saved the day for the Confederacy.
I'm Scottish living in Texas... I'm not sure which POV to view this from, my Scottish side in thinking this is funny, or my Texas side who has has 5 years in learning about the civil war, and thinking this is ridiculous....
Jackson also believed he could not eat pepper, or his left leg would start to hurt. He had to sit up-right on a chair, so as to keep his organs in their proper places. All of his battles were on a Sunday, so he truly believed God was on his side, especially since he won most of them! During a battle, he was often seen slicing open lemons and sucking on them. Yes, he was a most peculiar individual, but a damned good general.
@Sierra026 Sniffing lemons will quell nausea but who knows what Jackson was doing.
The battle of the Montior and the Merrimac (I think that's how the spelled it), yes, I remember nearly dropping off to sleep from utter boredom while discussing that in school.
@TheTraumarama2 Do you mean Ft. Sumpter, South Carolina ? The Ft. Sumpter that was under orders from Washington to be ready to close the passage to Charleston, South Carolina ? The Ft. Sumpter that a few weeks BEFORE the shelling received orders to Provoke an Armed Response from the Militia surrounding the Garrison ? The Ft. Sumpter that had solders of its garrison, from Southern States, removed and replaced with men from Northern States ? That Ft. Sumpter ?
@TheTraumarama2 Sorry, I was made aware of these reports and documents through PBS in the late '90's, before I came to the internet (one set of documents were on the show "Antiques Roadshow" along with the letter from Ft. Sumpter's Commandant to his wife) but it now appears that, even after all this time, there are those who are so uncomfortable with these documents being made public again. I am not well enough versed to regain access to these as a cohesive package. Though You May Be Able to !
From what I have read, Maj. Anderson merely moved to Ft. Sumter from Ft. Moultrie, because Sumter was more defensible. Lincoln ordered Capt. Fox to land at Sumter with supplies only (and come back with men if opposed) , and told the SC governor that he was sending supplies. The aggression was started when Beauregard gave the order to open the barrage on Ft. Sumter.
@johnkerry7 Exactly how? While the sketch was enjoyable, it said nothing I didn't already know. Perhaps it's just that the British know more about U.S. history than YOU do...sigh.
@screamingmeanie ::face palm::No, i never said i DIDNT know what they were talking about, but instead that the majority of Americans are more interested in MTV then learnin stuff. Any reason why you go directly to personal attack mode? Just wondering as i gave no reason for you to do so, you seem to have a great interest in people learning stuff as i do, so....wtf bro?
@johnkerry7 Actually, no. You said "Once again...the British show they know more about our own U.S. history then we do.... sigh... lol." You specifically include yourself in any statement that refers to a collective "we". I agree, a large percentage of the U.S. isn't interested in history as they should be, but, in truth, that is a failure of the school system. I didn't go into personal attack mode, I corrected a grammatical error. Perhaps another example of a failure of the system.
@Lalaxiaa Not quite... The confederates had 3 different flags that changed during the course of the Civil War. First was the Stars and Bars which they show in the video because that was the flag being flown when that particular battle with the ironclad ships took place (1862). The second flag that we are most commonly familiar with is the Stainless Banner with the cross of stars. The third flag was the Blood Stained Banner which had the cross of stars along with a vertical red stripe.
The iron clads were different in design, while the Virginia was built like the one seen here the Monitor was the first ship to utilize a gun turnent. The battle was a draw but the Monitor went on to inspire the modern battleship.
TERRIBLE! HH is usually spot on and hilarious...this has no resemblance to Stonewall at all. He didn't believe in that garbage about his arm, and was a Godly man, on top of being a military genius.
Yes he did Do your research and not just you American History books either the Feds made him look better so they would not look like fools for all the trouble he gave them.
I made a typo, I didnt mean that the guy who replaced jackson missed the opportunity in the war in general. I meant a missed opportunity in the battle of gettysburg. which was like whoever won it, would give the devastating blow to the other side.
the woman at the beginning sounds Canadian and by the way the portrayal of the Union ironclad is wrong, the ironclad in that certain battle was an ironclad called a "monitor" and the Confederate ironclad was a "casemate" ironclad. The union ironclad showed there was the USS Cairo. Stonewall Jackson also was called a "champion sleeper" and even fell asleep with food in his mouth. Though it was due to an illness or something (I dont remember). Jonathan also wasnt short, nor sleep every 5 seconds
Things get very confused in a war zone. And for sheer irony, a year later General Longstreet would be badly by a friendly fire incident in almost the same forest a year later.
"this man is no ledgend this man is some crazy arm waving idiot that keeps falling asleep". "HUH *amazing plan* *falls asleep*"." I suppose he has his moments". xD
As far as accents go, I've heard American actors do worse. I'm from the south so I can pick up the genuine or pushed accent. Anyway I love HH, I think it would be great if they covered prohibition or the Hatfield and McCoy feud.
I'd like to see how'd they would portray Sherman and Grant. But for the fellow Americans who bristle at the "Awesome USA" sketches, it is another country portraying our history. Kids in England are probably just as knowledgable about our history as we are theirs. Just sit back, and enjoy hearing our history from a different point of view or at least enjoy them trying to do our accents. :)
This show is for children, so it doesn't really matter about the accents or that the sketch wasn't filmed in America, it's just acting out the facts and at least they tried, besides, it's meant to be funny, not offensive.
Do you know that Christianity is correct? @simpsonmark That line had a bit of English leakin' out in it. Should have dropped that G on "dribbling." I'm getting such a kick out of watching these Brits take on accents!
@TheYell1ng Or was he trying to convey his last operattional directive of crossing the Rappahannock River and flanking the Federal lines through the Wilderness?
Possibly, it may have been a clever and eloquent way of wording final orders, and at the same time, mustering some scrap of dignity where there is hardly a smidgeon of dignity to be found; out in those fields, as you know, men died as pack animals.
yea they didn't make a fedie flag.... but i love that when most English people try to fake an American accent they always go for the southern accent. most of the south doesn't actually have a thick accent as how the actors were talking. still cool though
the battle ended when the union ship's rotating turret shot a shell into the steam stack which increased pressure and slowed the ship, so the confederates left before the pressure made them slow to a stop

@Alexandros1294 Yeah. We also insult people by referring to them as yankees. We grow up with the war here and the battles, and we even still have a Lee-Jackson Day here. I respect the Generals too, I think they had some great stragies and such, especially compared to most of the Nothern leadership.
Narcolyptic, half-deaf, and had some odd beliefs. But a tactical genius. Who sadly was killed early on in the war. And in what could be considered a Stupid Death. (I'll let you all wiki it so you can decide that for yourselves)
@MadOldKatLady The HH team's grasp of accents blow me away big time...
Ben and Larry do good Irish accents and so does Simon (he's the only cast member I know who has worked in Ireland). One of the female actors (I think its Alice) does a good one, too.
Mat Baynton, I love you dearly, sweetstuff - there's one thing you really need to work on and that is your Irish accent. You are pretty much half way there with the West Country/pirate accent... get the other half right you'll be smashing!
Actually, those are pretty decent southern accents. I don't many people who can do one, and I'm in drama club.

And those trees.......those look nothing like the forests of virginia. The trees are far too big and spread out.

@Lieblingsfachful Yeah, if they were somwhere in the US, I'd have to guess California (but it doens't matter, because they're in England).

All Southern accents are exaggerated! :)

Is there no accent they can't do?!

@SuperGingernutz the guy on the left sounds more gay North Carolinian than Virginian...
