The big difference with phillipines is its an small island on a good location, easy to control and able to collect toll fees from unlimited ships for free. The gov revenue will be extremely high so corruption is easily covered up by money. When u are rich, u are powerful enough to bribe everyone. Singapore's gov is able to do anything they wish. We can't say the same about philipines when not all corruption is covered up.

The fact now that the new government and its ministers are willing and going to review ministers' pay, I suppose who is right or wrong here is self explanatory. As long as the people who are in power are now willing to listen and where confirmed going in the wrong direction, make changes, the opposition in the parliament, in particular Low TK, had done a wonderful job alone. GDP is just an economic theory. Just like all economic theory, there are numerous assumptions added within the theory itself that does not always reflect reality. It is just a method to project apparent 'growth', thus should never be taken too seriously that the country is doing well. Boosting GDP too quickly has many serious implications to society and the country in the long-run. People should read and learn from history, rather than just be told what to do all the time.

The big difference with phillipines is its an small island on a good location, easy to control and able to collect toll fees from unlimited ships for free. The gov revenue will be extremely high so corruption is easily covered up by money. When u are rich, u are powerful enough to bribe everyone. Singapore's gov is able to do anything they wish. We can't say the same about philipines when not all corruption is covered up.

The fact now that the new government and its ministers are willing and going to review ministers' pay, I suppose who is right or wrong here is self explanatory. As long as the people who are in power are now willing to listen and where confirmed going in the wrong direction, make changes, the opposition in the parliament, in particular Low TK, had done a wonderful job alone. A normal graduate from the respective countries have to work their ass off just to pay off, that applies for Singapore as well, taxes from overseas are high as well, and you want, you can try checking online to see how much taxes are paid in the states as well. As much as i'm thankful for the transformation pap has brought about, times have changed. stop claiming credit for the past, for the past decade you've already sucked enough of taxpayers money, while not bringing much improvement to the standard of living of singaporeans as much as you've increased your salary. by putting economic benefits ahead as a priority at the expense of the well-being of singaporeans. isn't that enough?

GDP is just an economic theory. Just like all economic theory, there are numerous assumptions added within the theory itself that does not always reflect reality. It is just a method to project apparent 'growth', thus should never be taken too seriously that the country is doing well. Boosting GDP too quickly has many serious implications to society and the country in the long-run. People should read and learn from history, rather than just be told what to do all the time.

GST will not be increased this year... to save LHL face. But it will increase within this 5 year term. So if you voted for PAP, and when they change policy and increase your GST, pls don't complain. Transport fare review has been postpone to year end instead of the usual March timing. Why? because after they become gov again, they will increase your bus/mrt fares. dirty political trick!
Pap will form 2011 govt but let's bring that the margin to 51:49 and they will sit up and listen!

Perhaps only the rich area which he lives in is 1st class. In some opposition towns they don't even get lift upgrading which is a natural right of every tax payer. What first class is he talking about! Before you take tax money to fatten your old corpse, give them their basic right to lift upgrading!

I thank the PAP for its past efforts in making Singapore what it is today, but times change, and the candidates and policies you implement reek of elitism. When your candidates can't even address issues of the lower income groups I sure as hell am not going to vote for you.

The Swiss government has been based on a direct democracy, stemming from elections based on the Cantonal regions. This form of democracy has existed for 700 years in Switzerland. How can you call this a mediocre democracy? It is far more proactive than the Singaporean system.
Moreover, by raising the ministers pay, more than 10X the US president's pay (far more difficult job), the pay scheme is shown to be not based on the capability of the minister.

@shaunshaun88 yeah flaming denmark, finland, swiss who had better cabinet than singapore with lower operating salary. The basic worker salaries are higher for those countries with 50% tax and welfare every month for the unemployed. Guess their culture don't mind some neighbours who purposely stay unemployed to leech the tax, there are more people willing to work as well. That's basic care and freedom u won't ever see in asia. People are stepping each other here.

@shaunshaun88 cont.. can singapore cabinet achieve that too? 800 Euros per month for unemployed and at same time people are more happy to work than leeching. I doubt so. They only wanted excessive GDP which means hoping everybody will work 24 hours per day. At the end of the day size is not enough to become swiss economy. Comparisons to swiss are made by at the end of day a common sg bank acc is empty and people are jumping.

We put in our blood and sweat too. If you never work hard and only depend on the government to guide you, then I must say you are living in vain.

except for teh chean wang who took his own life like a gentleman for reasons outlined by the govt, not much cheating case involved senior civil service officials except the recent major singapore land authority senior officer case over the last forty years. of course many bad hats like corrupt lawyers, doctors and some other professionals were highlighted over the years - but these are mostly, if not all from the private sectors and have nothing to do with the ministers' pay rise here.

1) GDP rising, at the cost of Singaporeans employment, esp with all the foreign "talent" coming in.
2) Minister payslips are good, the average working man's pay isn't. makes one wonder where does all the money go.
3) If this carries on with the PAP in power, with all their ludicrous policies, I foresee this. The only locals left would be those with the govt or those too poor too migrate. The rest would all the foreigners. Is this the kind of Singapore you want? Betrayed by our own govt..

Their 6 figure salary is as crazy as corruption and doesn't make them any less greedy. We don't see it as corruption because a "salary" seems like a legitimate form of receiving money. if i'm not wrong, their salary comes from the tax we pay, and yet we don't have much say on this, with the amount of freedom of speech we have. PAP has indeed done much for SG's growth, but every party has its flaws, and i reckon this is just one of them.

Seriously I just feel that we should trust LKY. He brought the country from zero to what it is now. We should be thankful for all these that was done.
Compare our government / country with those countries which are so undeveloped and yet the government are still asking for money from the people without an appropriate reason and bribery is common those countries.
Before we blame our government, we should think about our situation. Are we really living in such a bad country ruled by PAP?
