i have a technical question, with the space shuttle on the top of the 747, how does the pilot use the rudder? i mean doesnt the Shuttle produce drag to the vertical stabilizer? i guess the 2 extra stabilizers on the horizontal one have to do with something?
why doesnt Nasa upgrade the 747-123 to the newer 747-400. It has more range on less fuel plus its capable of carrying heavier loads, in this case, the Space Shuttle

Because budgetting, plus since the shuttle program is ending soon, there's no point.

1. waste of tax money
2. cheaper to kill the environment than buy new/used -400
3. range not needed as travels mainly in US
4. this thing is more than capable of carrying the space shuttle. carrying heavier load not needed.
5. buying new/used -400 means they have to heavily modify that too.
Basically its all cheaper to just keep the 92' civic than buy a new 09' version when your only driving it around once a month.

yes, look at the upper deck windows. There are far less on the 747-100 than the -200.
