I have a welding test to take for a job, I'm nervous as all get out, and could use some advice. I've watched several welding apps on you tube and am amazed by these guys. I just finished school at ATI in Dallas, TX, but still unsure of myself. Any tips?
@welder4life11 Yes, I started out exactly like you. Study the manufactures recommendations for the wire you are going to use. Most job sites use .052 wire. Patience, practice, hardwork, and doing the best you can will get you to an expert level. Good luck.
Depending on the fit up and acess you have to know how to push and pull all types of welding processes to look good to inspector on tube steel to a base plate like he is welding on you want to push the puddle for a flat bead one in two over it works everytime
you can weld flux core with a push weld you imbecile! on the field welding I beams through the rat hole, you guys want to exercise your classroom knowledge fukn book worms. in the field it's different and if you mess up, gouge.... ironworkers baby! fukn nerds. zanjas, good job bubba! fuk these scabs..SCABS! get 4 certifications then politic, otherwise shet-ap!
not the worst weld I've ever seen, but it should be more even. There are several patches that look sloppy. I don't think this alone would pass a test, but a few more beads would make it sound.
@ZANJASTEABRO I have. Which is why I made that comment. NR305 is flat and horizontal wire. NR 232 is all position wire. I'm not trying to put you on blast but 232 wire is more challenging to run then 305 wire.
Pretreated heat to steel isn't always necessary if you're welding outside. But for indoor, it can be considerable to pretreated heat. It's recommended to have high precent of argon and low precent of co2 with 45mm or 60mm instead of preheated. For structure code, it cannot be welding in push direction. Because slag will be trap inside and it can be found by inspection x-ray. I'm using with 98% argon and 2% co2 with 60mm and it's passable by inspection. 98/2 gas is very hot when you welded.
aws regulates structural steel to be preheated to certain temperatures depending on the thickness and the type of steel. normal steel such as a 572 50 preheat temperatures are 0 to 1.5'' 50 degrees 1.5'' to 2.5'' is 150 deg and 2.5'' and up is 225 but steel such as a992 65 is 0 to .75 inch is 50 deg, .75 to 1.5 is 150 deg 1.5 to 2.5 is 225 deg and 2.5 and up is 300 deg
@NickC1973 okay first of all nick I'm not arguing and second the way a weld looks doesn't correlate to it's structural integrity which i am saying i learned to achieve by pulling not pushing, i have gone to school to learn the proper welding procedures sanctioned by the American welding society and was just curious why they are not pulling the puddle nick you failed
man i must say that was a beautiful bead now i dont mean to toot my own horn but ive gotten pretty good with dual shield but thats only because its probably the easiest welding on the planet but man your beads put mine to shame bravo
nice man what kind of wire is that 232? r u useing a dual shield? i just got my flux certs tryin to get into the ironworkers union love videos like this

I have my FCAW ticket and i can tell you now both pushing and dragging are acceptable.

try doing that with NR 232.......

you dont drag because it lays down a colder weld. but his weld still looks like shit
noah0705 11 months ago
especially on structural steel, never push it, traps slag compromising the weld, your weld is only as strong as its weakest point
jonesy2873 11 months ago
why is he pushing flux
jonesy2873 11 months ago 2
@jonesy2873 exactly my thoughts bro, he must be using thin wire cause you and I know you dont push Flux core, you drag.

was wondwering if you pre heated the base plate?
tbonelaurell 1 year ago
yea i think is a little cold, run it hotter and pull slower and ul see the scorpion tail
MegaChilitos 1 year ago
yes ,it is important to pull the bead when flux core arc welding,Although the guy that,s welding looks to be in the middle of push/pull.
cosanostra1850 1 year ago
Pretty bead but that looks kinda cold. Move slower and pull.

hey are you running .035 .045 or .060 wire??
d3javoodoo 1 year ago
Thought you had to heat treat for structural steel or you get cracks?
Most say recommended for car frame welding.
