And if you have not experienced small joint locks from a master instructor - you have no idea how effective they are. So you try playing by these rules and take one of those kicks to the head - you would feel differently

Ive learned TaeKwonDo till green belt, have fought red and black belts, been kicked hard to ground,punched on stomach without any guard, but Ive always stood up and fought again, and the kick which I mastered was the Tornado Kick. I dont attack much though sometimes I lose by points but I always aim for KO.

when i learned TKD we learned both traditional and sport traditional being guard up and sport being guard down. The reason for guard down at least how i see it is it baits the other person so u can hopefully counter and it allows for greater speed because you are more relaxed but for a real fight i agree i dont recommend it.

@exelcious Sometimes it's speed, a lot of times it's just that it's unexpected. You're guarding your body because that's where the majority of the points are going to come from. Of course, there's always the possibility of people going to the head, but it's not something that is the majority. A bad head kick can easily lead to easy points scored on body kicks or a knockdown, after all you are only on one leg during that time.
