First I thought, UK "In the Dead of Night" rip off, but the song branched out into some interesting sections, especially the cello part. So I'll check out more.
The album is on Napster but only 30 second clips of the tunes. :(
I have credits and I could use those but i haven't heard much of the music yet . ORION studio tonight. Maybe I'll just buy the CD there directly from the band. I'll be at ROSfest but not all weekend so I'll miss D97 there.
I found this from a link from the video of your drummer playing with Bill Bruford. I must say it was a pleasure to find this. It reminds me a bit of Buruford's solo work he did with Allan Holdsworth, which is some of my favorite music of all time.Keep up the great work.... I look forward to hearing more.
I was partly responsible for the radio interview at the Hawke Chill-out Sessions on the 18th, very well done. I see why you are all the rage now as a new band with much promise and for good reason!!.. Working on the Wisconsin gig for you if you can swing it for 2011..Brilliant!!
Friend of mine, a drummer, told me - you like Allan Holdsworth, you like Bill Bruford, you gotta check this band out. After a few days of trying to remember if he said "District" or "Zone" or "97" or "79" I finally remembered. Fuggin Hell this is the bomb, I love this video, so catchy, so intelligently done and the i love the video effects - it both underscores the message of music over image while simultaneously providing a stunning image. I love this band, and the vocalist is a star!
@cmccabe07921 Hey thanks! Check out our CD "Hybrid Child", there's plenty more where this came from :-) It's on Amazon, iTunes, lasercd.com, and is getting a great reception. We also have a whole show up for download on our Bandcamp site, with the chance to get some cool gifts if you make a donation to our next recording project when you download. Thanks for listening!
Don't listen to the hate comments D97, you guys have a great unique sound and one of the best voices I've heard in metal in a long time! A voice that can actually sing sweet melodies! :D
I really dig the fusiony bit right before the music gets medieval on your ass. My favorite prog stuff is really the late 70s fusiony stuff, like UK. District 97 graced the same stage (the mighty fine Whittier Community Theater) where Eddie Jobson performed all those great UK tunes a few months prior. Finneus Gage also lay down some really nice fusiony prog -- some of the best I have ever heard (for a side project?!?). D97 are more eclectic, which is always welcome. Just impressed by the talent!
Wow! Shit. These guys are amazing. I can't believe I could have seen them at Calprog, but due to a series of unfortunate events, I had to pass it up. Wow. This is really well done and ORIGINAL prog rock. Not too symphonic. Not too RIO. Just right. I love Yes, Genesis, and the classics, but I'm tired of bands that sound like that and ape riffs from 70s prog. This stuff is pretty unique and original. Well done!
@SteveAlbinisPussy Dude, you're awesome. Thanks for listening. No sweat about missing CalProg, the WHOLE show will be up for download Monday 12/6 from our Bandcamp site. Also, be sure to pick up Hybrid Child from Amazon, itunes, Laser's Edge etc., I think it's safe to say you'l like it :-)
@D97Music Yeah... will order it on Amazon right now. Also, Calprog has a live show CD for sale... Wonder it if it still around? @LiteracyLabyrinth -- I think the movie you're thinking of is A Scanner Darkly. My hope is that D97 can turn some of the younger kids onto prog. I love prog rock, but the crowd is near geriatric. I myself was a born when Foxtrot and Close to the Edge came out. I got into prog in college and further when indie rock was prog influenced. Lost interest in most other music.
It would be cool if you guys toured with Dream Theater if they ever do the Progressive Nation tour. Although it is a bit more metal -- Opeth, Between the Burried and Me, etc., these guys can rock pretty hard. It's not like Dream Theater are Cannibal Corpse -- half their stuff reminds me of Styx (thank goodness they pick the right stuff to play live!). Good luck. You may be one of the few prog bands that end up getting fans outside of prog. It's essential, cuz there's not a lot of prog fans!
Yeah, one thing about the prog fans is that many are very much mired in 1970s stuff, and they want to listen to that. As Dave Kerman mused about NEARfest -- most of the people just want to get back in their car and listen to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway for the 50,000th time. That's one unfortunate thing about prog. The fans (including me) tend to be curmudgeons and very negative about things outside of our comfort zones. I was into Magma and UZ, and hated symph. Now I love Yes. Favorite band!
I don't think they add anything new or interesting to the scene at all. Strongly overrated just in my opinion... and i'm a STRONG enforcer of crimson so dont think i don't appreciate prog, i really do... they just aren't interesting. :\
@thewaterisredlikeyou I disagree. They are far more eclectic and synthesize a lot of genres into a new style. Quite honestly, I think Crimson are overrated. The first record wasn't that good, but for some reason it's the holy grail of prog rock. Their first good record was Lizard. Red and Larks' Tongues are great. Whetton's singing is kind of lame, though. Frip's guitar playing took some time (and lessons) to evolve, and he's not as original as some suspect. Wouldn't be prog without a cynic, tho
@thewaterisredlikeyou Also, Crimson never had a killer ass keyboard player. Nothing like a Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks or Kerry Minear. The melotron was used to add texture and layering, but nothing too impressive. Crimson never had awesome group vocals like Yes or Gentle Giant. What they did well was really cold, clinical, and obtuse rock, like Red. That one sends chills up my spine. But Crimson really only have a few great tunes scattered amongst a lot of chaff. Maybe 1-2 records are "perfect".
@SteveAlbinisPussy What didn't you like about court of the crimson king? :P that album was FANTASTIC. really disappointed me when i heard the next album though In the wake of Poseidon) and realized right away that they just tried to do what they did the first time >:(. Lizard was amazing too looved the acoustic on that record. Anyways besides me disagreeing with the fact that crimsons overrated, back to the point: I was just using crimson as an example so that people didn't think i was just some
@thewaterisredlikeyou It's too "hippy" for me. Even "The Yes Album" from about that time is more forward looking. The last track is really good, but KC never bring the prog for me on this one. Yes, ITWOP is an awful record. Their first great one is Lizard. A few great ones after that. 80s Crimson Afro-pop stuff is really cool too. I love Discipline era stuff, be it a bit slick. I think indie bands like Shudder to Think, Polvo, Don Caballero, and Cheer-Accident make Crimson seem like Crapson.
@SteveAlbinisPussy kid who liked the shit that comes outta the stereo nowadays. What i just don't like out of this band is i'm not really hearing nething new, i feel as though the only reason this band is getting attention is out of the "shock factor" that an american idol contestant could possibly play in a progressive rock band do u understand what i mean? p.s. what NEW genres do they fuse in your opinion
Wow the clip looks like animation movie I saw recently starring Keanu reeves
Now, the music is excellent - the female singer is clear and delivers well, the time sigs are odd and it is definitely prog. Catchy melody too, and heavy guitars mixed with classical instruments give an eclectic feel. Would like to get an album of this band.
@LiteracyLabyrinth Thanks! Our album "Hybrid Child" is available worldwide. You can pick it up on Amazon, iTunes etc. If you do, let us know what you think!
@svcdx We would prefer that you purchase it. If you like this, we think you'll like the whole CD! You can hear more tracks for free on our website or Myspace page.
This is a very interesting song. The chorus sounds very punk/indie, yet there are organ sounds and there's that unison solo that's very DT-esque. There's something with the song though thats a little...off. Can't explain what though.
A friend told me to check this band out and I've gotta say - they've REALLY got that something that makes them . . them. You know? I LOVE their sound, it rocks! And the singer is fantastic. Great great great song, awesome band. I'll need to get their album! (:
Weird mix, but to great effect... I can hear a Heart vocal with a bit of No Doubt attitude. The music has some Yes, a few touches of Frank Zappa, but all in a modern context. I really like this!
@Hyardacil Thanks a lot! Although the official release date isn't until 9/14, you can get it early at the Laser's Edge site (can't post url's on here) if you're so inclined. Take care!
this is fantastic! i keep finding myself coming back here, it's bands like you who will keep prog alive! thanks so much! I love the Frank Zappa Montana-ish bit in the verse :)
Yeah!!! This is the direction I want to see music go in. It's easy to make a marketable pop song, and it's easy to make spacy heady 7/8 prog but to combine the two is a real challenge. District 97 has done it.
@D97Music Great song, great feel. Yes, I saw the promo video at Nearfest this weekend, very cool. My band "Frogg Cafe" played NF in 2005 and it was awesome. I downloaded the Messiaen...VERY good. Best of luck to you guys. Check out my band when you get a chance, we used to be a Zappa band back in the day. Peace!
While I'm not sure if I liked the video, I LOVE LOVE LOVED the song! It's like Paramore does prog. Which is pretty epic in my humble opinion. The prog genre needs to grow and change to stay alive, and if this is the path it's going to take, count me in on the bandwagon!
@evildoombabies Hey Thanks! Did you happen to see this video at NEARfest this weekend? The album's out September 14th, tell your friends! Also, there's a free download of a track that will not be on the album on our bandcamp site. Just google District 97 Bandcamp (can't post URL's here)

Makes me think - happy female fronted Dream Theater but not metal.
2:51 is an epic little chorus, and the simple tom fill backed by double bass worked nicely. Have heard similar variations of it in plenty of metal songs, but it definitely puts some nice spice to this already excellent song.
@LilithImmacualte How is this not prog rock? The Jazz and Classical influences are extremely clear throughout the piece, especially at 1:54.
And if you're one of those people who says "It's too poppy to be prog!" Might I direct you to Moody Blues, The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Mike Oldfield, Lightbulb Sun era Porcupine Tree etc. etc. etc. All of whom are some of the most highly regarded Prog artists of all time.
@Nubnut Just because it has jazz influence doesnt make it prog rock... That would be jazz fusion... Every genre of music has jazz or blues influence... Mike Oldfield is a genius and how dare you compare him to this atrocity... The Beatles are hippy music that dont count as prog rock or even rock... Do your research and not base all the stuff you say on oppinion... Dream theater is prog rock... Cynic is jazz fusion but can be considered prog rock. Mahavishnu Orchestra is Jazz/Prog rock. This isnt
@LilithImmacualte Actually the definition for Crossover Prog is officially Defined as "an influence from mainstream music in addition to classical, jazz and folk. Compositions, however, still exhibit a high degree of sophistication, sometimes outright complexity"
Also, it's ironic that you mention Dream Theater, as all of the members of Dream theater point to the Beatles as the first ever Prog band (and Sgt. Peppers is generally considered the first ever Prog rock album).
@Nubnut Beatles is no way AT ALL prog rock. I dont care if dream theater said that, they are not. They are more blues influenced then jazz. I would even go so far to consider them blues. What i think is happening between you and i is we consider different things to be prog rock... The only thing i really consider to be "Prog rock" would be the timing... And the odd occasional jazz riff. But really... Beatles are not prog rock.. i dont care what anybody says...
@LilithImmacualte maybe, but prog rock is "Rock with heavy influence from classical music and Jazz". Which yes, the Beatle's early stuff is more bluesy. But go listen to a Day in the Life and tell me that has no classical influences.
Also, you can't really compare Cynic, District 97 is Crossover prog, where as Cynic is Extreme Metal Prog.
It's like comparing Death Metal (Nile, Necrophagist)to Classic Heavy Metal (Deep Purple, Zeppelin) they're very different. But they're both metal.
@Nubnut I would not consider prog rock "rock with heavy influence from classical music and jazz" the prog part of the title typically refers to it trying to be a more newy, proggy, sound, being progressive, not going back to other styles. Sure it may have some influence, as all music does, but progressive is looking more forward, not backwards realaly...
@phoenix7289 Ya I can understand what you mean by that.
But how I've always seen it is the way Mike Patton put the difference between avant-garde music, and Prog music.
"If we were to compare music to architecture, Prog music and Avant-garde in theory are the same thing. But the outcome is very different. Avant-garde throws away the rule book that looks like something out of Dr. Seuss, where as prog looks back on the old rule books and expands upon them to make a gigantic, epic villa."
@phoenix7289 Which actually now that i re-read that I think you're right.
That yes, they do take major influences from past genres but the basis of it is to create something completely unique. Which when you start looking at the structure of most prog songs (to use a previous example, something like the Drapery Falls by Opeth) they're all so amazingly in depth and unique that there's just so much you can do with it.
I'd rather the band showcase their strong musicianship than try to write a song strictly for top 40 radio. District 97's material is oh so much better than the mainstream crap littering the airwaves these days.
Ok not bad but (a) the chorus sucks and (b) the guitar in sync with the lyrics on the high notes is cheesy.

I dare say, I've been looking for something like this. Good to have something contemporary to listen to for a change. :P

District 97 has done it.

yes, it`s some kind of progressive...

I keep wondering where she is going. Because it appears she is just walking back and forth alone in that room…

Makes me think - happy female fronted Dream Theater but not metal.
2:51 is an epic little chorus, and the simple tom fill backed by double bass worked nicely. Have heard similar variations of it in plenty of metal songs, but it definitely puts some nice spice to this already excellent song.
Nice job mates.

That is some intense tambourine action. \m/ \m/

@iambattleready Dont even... Please tell me how this is metal? This isnt even prog rock...
LilithImmacualte 1 year ago
@LilithImmacualte How is this not prog rock? The Jazz and Classical influences are extremely clear throughout the piece, especially at 1:54.
And if you're one of those people who says "It's too poppy to be prog!" Might I direct you to Moody Blues, The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Mike Oldfield, Lightbulb Sun era Porcupine Tree etc. etc. etc. All of whom are some of the most highly regarded Prog artists of all time.
Nubnut 1 year ago
@Nubnut Just because it has jazz influence doesnt make it prog rock... That would be jazz fusion... Every genre of music has jazz or blues influence... Mike Oldfield is a genius and how dare you compare him to this atrocity... The Beatles are hippy music that dont count as prog rock or even rock... Do your research and not base all the stuff you say on oppinion... Dream theater is prog rock... Cynic is jazz fusion but can be considered prog rock. Mahavishnu Orchestra is Jazz/Prog rock. This isnt
LilithImmacualte 1 year ago
@LilithImmacualte Actually the definition for Crossover Prog is officially Defined as "an influence from mainstream music in addition to classical, jazz and folk. Compositions, however, still exhibit a high degree of sophistication, sometimes outright complexity"
Also, it's ironic that you mention Dream Theater, as all of the members of Dream theater point to the Beatles as the first ever Prog band (and Sgt. Peppers is generally considered the first ever Prog rock album).
Nubnut 1 year ago
@Nubnut Beatles is no way AT ALL prog rock. I dont care if dream theater said that, they are not. They are more blues influenced then jazz. I would even go so far to consider them blues. What i think is happening between you and i is we consider different things to be prog rock... The only thing i really consider to be "Prog rock" would be the timing... And the odd occasional jazz riff. But really... Beatles are not prog rock.. i dont care what anybody says...
LilithImmacualte 1 year ago
@LilithImmacualte maybe, but prog rock is "Rock with heavy influence from classical music and Jazz". Which yes, the Beatle's early stuff is more bluesy. But go listen to a Day in the Life and tell me that has no classical influences.
Also, you can't really compare Cynic, District 97 is Crossover prog, where as Cynic is Extreme Metal Prog.
It's like comparing Death Metal (Nile, Necrophagist)to Classic Heavy Metal (Deep Purple, Zeppelin) they're very different. But they're both metal.
Nubnut 1 year ago
@Nubnut I would not consider prog rock "rock with heavy influence from classical music and jazz" the prog part of the title typically refers to it trying to be a more newy, proggy, sound, being progressive, not going back to other styles. Sure it may have some influence, as all music does, but progressive is looking more forward, not backwards realaly...
phoenix7289 1 year ago
@phoenix7289 Ya I can understand what you mean by that.
But how I've always seen it is the way Mike Patton put the difference between avant-garde music, and Prog music.
"If we were to compare music to architecture, Prog music and Avant-garde in theory are the same thing. But the outcome is very different. Avant-garde throws away the rule book that looks like something out of Dr. Seuss, where as prog looks back on the old rule books and expands upon them to make a gigantic, epic villa."
Nubnut 1 year ago
@phoenix7289 Which actually now that i re-read that I think you're right.
That yes, they do take major influences from past genres but the basis of it is to create something completely unique. Which when you start looking at the structure of most prog songs (to use a previous example, something like the Drapery Falls by Opeth) they're all so amazingly in depth and unique that there's just so much you can do with it.
Nubnut 1 year ago
@Nubnut Which is exactly what I love about prog and why I love playing to/listening to prog! :D
phoenix7289 1 year ago
@Nubnut Please go listen to Cynic and tell me how these guys compare to them from a "prog rock" point of view...

Un bel pezzo. Si sente che hanno ascoltato un bel po' di progressive anni '70.
Peccato per l'abuso del doppio pedale e per la chitarra un po' troppo metal.
Comunque, per me, sono un gruppo notevole. Per ora.

The way this video seems to try to make the band members look like Second Life avatars is pretty annoying visually.
Well played, but meh materialwise and no commercial potential.

I'd rather the band showcase their strong musicianship than try to write a song strictly for top 40 radio. District 97's material is oh so much better than the mainstream crap littering the airwaves these days.
