My dream is to go to Japan! it is my goal in life, and I hopefully will be there to visit BUT I really want to live there, when I finish high school I I'll do so :D
i'm 16 and as you said earlier you can go to japan for a "working holiday" this is what i want to do after college or 6th form during my gap year or just during a holiday, hopefully you reply but from your experiences is there alot of people working in agriculture, marketing and merchandising?or even crafts and carpentry, i doubt if i get a degree it will be on those subjects but i enjoy thoroughly and i thought it would be a good way to get round an enjoyable, sustainable work holiday in Japan.
This may sound like a stupid question, but If you come to Japan, I have no idea how to become a legal citizen. (Or if you can become one at all) But if you can, then do you need a degree to become a citizen? My situation is, I want to become a mangaka in Japan. Would I need a collage degree if I wanted to do that? And I know that this is a lot of questions, but my last one is, does it matter what degree it is? Like, If you get a degree in law and you wanna be an artist in Japan, does it matter?
KONICHIWA!! o genki desu ka :)) OMG i just wanna said that u vids help a lot i love Japan i love the culture the music especially how the talk but its almost impossible to go over cause i dont have the money i live in Argentina and its so damn far away but i really wanna go its a dream!!! and i just hope someday i can be able to go and meet such a nice Country !!!! thank u so much for the vids, take care yourself and have a great week
omg this is exactly my goal in life!!!!!!! people think i'm crazy because i've made up my mind about going and getting a job in japan and i'm only just turning 15. i really want to be involved in their art industry and i've been studying japanese from a book for a year now...any ideas or tips please? thanks
Thanks, Richard. I agree that it's totally possible for motivated people to get over here and have a really great time. Yes, there are difficulties involved, but nothing that can't be overcome with effort. It's been worth it for me.
im still a freshmen in college course computer science... but thats what i think like "will japan accept foreigner people working there?" i was so positive like "im sure they will." but good thing i saw this video with Richard in japan working someday hope i can work in japan at least for experience and i still have a long way to go... until 4th sem man im coming xDDD
Okay so I am just wondering, do you HAVE to have a degree for any job in Japan or just like a teacher/doctor/etc. I am just wondering and it is my goal to go and visit/live in Japan for awhile. Thank you very much, reply soon please :)
I have a degree in teaching English as a second language, but I'm not a native speaker. I think that makes things harder, because they expect natives to be able to teach their own language, but if the non-native went to a university and studied how to teach for 5 years, that's not good. I would not be able to teach my native language, because I have no clue about the grammar. Though I bet no one would want to learn it anyway, as it's one of the hardest languages in the world. :-D
To get an instructor visa, you have to have completed your formal education in the target language.
However, you can work on a cultural visa with fewer restrictions (you just won't be able to teach at a school). In such a case, you'll simply have to sell your skills individually to prospective employers.
Hello Richard-san! Just saw your video and wanna thank you for your positive and encouraging "speech". I felt like you gave me just what I needed - a good ol' kick in the behind =). I´ve been to Japan before and I´ve always wanted to go back but I´m quite good at postponing things. After seeing your video I felt like I have to get a grip of myself and try to get a reach of my dream - to go back to Japan and work there Soo.. got a job for me in Japan? =P Anyway, thank´s Richard!
You can take a degree in Japan yes, as long as you pass all the usual entry criteria. Actually Japanese unis are screaming out for students because there are no kids in Japan!
Yep, UK degree should be cool for immigration. Well, mine was!
Depends on the exchange rate, this year "yes", last year "no". Having said that the US is one of the cheapest places to live so everywhere seems expensive in contrast!
im still a teenager but im aiming to be a zoologist. id love to move to japan but im not sure i could aford it. i hear that its more expensive than living in the US and just US housing is hard to aford.. any adivise/coments? Would that be a good job to do in japan? If not what is best? my japanese isnt that good. I know questions but if you responded id be clueless id be like ah... um.. so des ka... yeahhh... hmm lol
actually im gonna go to japan :) in like 6 years :P lool :) as first i need to finish sixth form and then im gonna study japanese at the university in england ^^ and then im gonna live in japan!! have that ppl!!
and big thanks for Richard ^^ you encouraged me to make thi sdecision :):) and thanks for your videos and other stuff with tips of learning japanese *_*
thanks for the video :) you got my job perfectly. its my life goal. i've always wanted to go to japan and teach english to people. it seems fun and i really like teaching.. :) thanks again lol

I'm a british expat currently living/working in spain but I will go to japan ultimately! problem is i dont have a degree and in spain could be very difficult. Could I still get a legit degree online? what is the best sites? i have a uk posting address if its unavailable for spanish residents.
does anyone know if you can get a working visa for japan with an online school degree (for example, in america there is the university of phoenix online)
Do you think getting a programming or engineering job in Japan would be a difficult task for a foreigner? I'm a bit concerned about it because of this harsh economy, lately. Would a Bachelors Degree there do the trick?
I'm studying off of the Genki book program and I must say it is fantastic. I have been studying by myself for about an hour or so each day and I am amazed by the progress i have already made in about two weeks. Keep up the GREAT work!!!
Also, Richard, I am dying to hear what your Japanese sounds like because (I am an American) of your accent in English. :D
As long as it's a degree you should be OK. You might have a slightly tough time if you're not from a native speaker country, it just means you'll have to try a little harder!
Did you travel to japan a lot in short breaks before you actually moved there?
Like, Japan for a few weeks, home for a few months etc...
Cause that's what I intend to do.
I'm just about to start university here in Leeds. I'll have a degree, (in sociology) but I don't want to work as an english teacher in japan, are there many other career options for brits who probably won't be fluent, but will have a good grasp of japanese?
I'd also like to Mention that if i have around 2-3 Years of Experience in my work, does it count for a lot? Does it make a Noticable Difference when i'm Job Searching in Japan?
Also the Jet Program is Only for people Becoming Teachers? Or do they have other available jobs?
I also want to come to Japan and Work / Live there.
I did 2 Years at a University for a 2 Year Degree there on Computer Science. The thing is due to some Technicalities i never Received the Actual Paper / Diploma.
Would they take my Word for it, that i completed a 2 year course? Or do they Compulsory need to see the paper? I have a crapload of other Diplomas on Cisco and other Computer stuff that are pretty Impressive but not the Uni Degree.
I have an HND in jewellery I know you are repeating yourself alot but does that mean I need to get a BA in Jewellery to live over there. What about just for a year or 6 months.
Im in my freshman year in high school and i wanted to know how u got were u were?...i Really want to be a English teacher in Japan...What did u study at the university to get u this AMAZING job.? Whats ur degree????
I got a question : If I don't have any University degree or anything BUT I got experience in what I'm doing, is it still possible for me to get a job there?(I live in Canada and we got programs to work in a job we want while practicing it, I dunno if you know what I'm talking about, It's called a DEP)
For those without uni degrees, its possible to get a working holiday visa for one year from some countries. Unfortunetly I think the US is excluded from this. Canada and the UK should be fine though.
I'm trying to do this right now, firstly looking for something I can apply to stateside that can help me get a work visa. Most places want you to already be in Japan with a work Visa. I've applied to a bunch of schools already, and turned down on my first interview. I do NOT have TESOL cert yet, so I figure I'll just get that first, then try to go from there.
Can be hard to fin an employer that want to sponsor your visa (especially since the JET program is quite restricted regarding nationality - even if you have a masters degree, Japanese skills and better English language and culture skills than many native anglophones).
Im 16 and going into college, Im going to do Graphic Design at college and Im pretty good at graphics, drawing and especially manga which im quickly getting pretty good at. Do you think it would be easy to get a job in graphics in Japan if I did well on my graphic Design A level?
Yeah, I'm going into the Air Force. I'm going to find out soon if I'll be sent there because they have 3 bases in Japan so its good odds. I put them all down as choices. I plan on getting a degree on base, working with machines and possibly robotics since that is an advanced field in Japan. Also I plan to live off base with housing allowances and probably a roomate from the AF base as well.
I'd say they're pretty balanced out with advantages and disadvantages to both. With the exchange rates at the moment then Korea is cheaper. You'd need at least 5,000 yen per day to live in Japan.
So how much is 5000 yen in American dollars? And I also have another question Mr. Richard, does Japans small land - space (country size) bring any problems?
I'm actually trying to get my school to get Japanese classes so I can come over to make stories for video games, manga, anime, etc. But what kind of degree do you need? Thanx for uploading these videos though, it is helping me towards that goal! I took two hours and pretty much already know the numbers 1-20! =D
hey im 15 and have knowen for ages this is what i to do i started learnig 1 year ago i got into it because of my japanease best mate when i was 6 (i helped her with english ect im skint) thanks for the jetprogramme tip and abot the degree im an B student so ithink ill do fine thanks alot yours korrie
Well, I didn't quite catch. I'm a future teacher of English (getting my degree in July) BUT I'm Russian. Is it possible for a non-native speaker get an ELT job in Japan?
Hey me and my buddy are graduating this year my buddy has all academic i have all academic except math but we are taking a year of from this june to next to get a job with his uncle to make about roughly 16 - 18 000 bucks and we were wondering what to do? , we are both really technickly inclined with computer components ectera but im very into mechanics, and i always wanted to be like a welder for 1 of the super ship companys over there or something like that you know, how hard would this be?
He means a university degree in any language. If you want to teach English it must be from an English speaking country and 4 years long.
The visa regulations have changed recently and it is now harder for employers to sponsor people, but start with one of the big (eikaiwa) schools, like Shane, Berlitz or ECC. They set you up and if you don't like it, just stick out the year and make the most of it or leave. Competition for jobs is stiffer now too.
Ah, I heard about this 2 years back. This is exactly what I was heading for til I realised I don't really like teenagers o kindergarten kids.... O.o Its still a pretty nice package deal so I recommend this also to anyone!
With a lot of the people I work with, they believe that most of your learning happens outside school. So even if you're in the worst set with the worst teachers, if you set a goal and start learning yourself you can achieve anything! Seriously.
In my country there are only 2-3 schools that teaches Japanese. Im from Greece and one day i will visit Japan for sure. I love Japan like crazy. Tokyo the city of my dreams
Watashi wa Koukou Ninensei! I take Japanese at my high school, I'm a second year and my town has a sister city in japan and they do exchanges over the summer.
I still have to go to Culinary school and thats alot of work! I'm good with people so learning hospitality shouldn't be hard. But I don't know which kind of food I should pick. Just pastries or should I go for normal cooking.
I'm so ending up in a hotel. Or even a Gaijin bar is great!
that's a relief! I've been wanting to teach English in Japan for a while! It's nice to hear it's easier to do that. Do you need a degree from a japanese collage, though?
Your techniques are really creative ^^ I'm currently studying for a BBA degree in International Business Management and hoping I could find a job in Japan. =]
If you know anything about that please let me know.
My dream is to go to Japan! it is my goal in life, and I hopefully will be there to visit BUT I really want to live there, when I finish high school I I'll do so :D

If I don't have any degree but I have experience in a certain domain, can I still come with a visa?

If you are really, really good, but if that's the case someone would have head hunted you already!

I got a question : If I don't have any University degree or anything BUT I got experience in what I'm doing, is it still possible for me to get a job there?(I live in Canada and we got programs to work in a job we want while practicing it, I dunno if you know what I'm talking about, It's called a DEP)
darkitachi50 2 years ago
For those without uni degrees, its possible to get a working holiday visa for one year from some countries. Unfortunetly I think the US is excluded from this. Canada and the UK should be fine though.
CTichigo 2 years ago
I'm trying to do this right now, firstly looking for something I can apply to stateside that can help me get a work visa. Most places want you to already be in Japan with a work Visa. I've applied to a bunch of schools already, and turned down on my first interview. I do NOT have TESOL cert yet, so I figure I'll just get that first, then try to go from there.

Can be hard to fin an employer that want to sponsor your visa (especially since the JET program is quite restricted regarding nationality - even if you have a masters degree, Japanese skills and better English language and culture skills than many native anglophones).

Do you still need a degree?
EnvyingSerpent 3 years ago
I believe so, although I have heard of people who get a job on base and technically live there, but actually live off base.
GenkiJapanNet 2 years ago
Yeah, I'm going into the Air Force. I'm going to find out soon if I'll be sent there because they have 3 bases in Japan so its good odds. I put them all down as choices. I plan on getting a degree on base, working with machines and possibly robotics since that is an advanced field in Japan. Also I plan to live off base with housing allowances and probably a roomate from the AF base as well.
EnvyingSerpent 2 years ago
what about the labor industry is there a real demand?
BTpaintballer 3 years ago
Usually not if it's a job a Japanese person could do.

Is it easier to live in Korea or Japan? How much money should you bring if you don't have a job?
xdegrassilover92x 3 years ago
I'd say they're pretty balanced out with advantages and disadvantages to both. With the exchange rates at the moment then Korea is cheaper. You'd need at least 5,000 yen per day to live in Japan.
GenkiJapanNet 2 years ago
So how much is 5000 yen in American dollars? And I also have another question Mr. Richard, does Japans small land - space (country size) bring any problems?
shinofreak011 2 years ago
5000 yen is around $50.
Space doesn't really bring any problems as such, but you feel it when you go to other places and see how much room you could be living in!

what kind of degree ? AA BA MA ???
Gravexero 3 years ago
Usually any 3 year (UK) or 4 year (US) degree is fine, it's purely for immigration to prove you're a get things done type person!
GenkiJapanNet 3 years ago
do you mean high school degree?
DenaGee 3 years ago
No, it has to be university level.
GenkiJapanNet 2 years ago
Let's say I don't have a University level But I have the experience in a certain job, is it still possible for me to work there?
darkitachi50 2 years ago
Maybe if it's a very highly skilled job with very few people who can do it.
GenkiJapanNet 2 years ago
can you have an associated degree ??
kartooned2 2 years ago
can it be a 2 year degree ??
kartooned2 2 years ago
I think it has to be bachelors or above, so if the 2 year one is that level then maybe yes.
GenkiJapanNet 2 years ago
I've heard that having 6+ years in any job field can get you a work visa as well...do you know if there's any truth to that?
xxfutureisnowxx 3 years ago
I've heard the rumor, but I've never actually heard of anyone who's done it. I have a feeling it's just a rumor, but just check with the embassy.

also can you define a college degree please? is it an A level? or did you mean a university degree?
OriChild 3 years ago
its a university degree in anything!! you just need to to prove you're 'clever', and you speak english so thats all you NEED education-wise...
ZubinZubinZubin 3 years ago
u need a University Degree in ANY field: Teaching, Business & Finance, IT, Arts, Langauge..whatever you want, but it must be a Bachelor or higher
forbiddenhill 3 years ago
He means a university degree in any language. If you want to teach English it must be from an English speaking country and 4 years long.
The visa regulations have changed recently and it is now harder for employers to sponsor people, but start with one of the big (eikaiwa) schools, like Shane, Berlitz or ECC. They set you up and if you don't like it, just stick out the year and make the most of it or leave. Competition for jobs is stiffer now too.

i know im going to get a bad collage degree :|
Xgloomshadow 3 years ago
With a lot of the people I work with, they believe that most of your learning happens outside school. So even if you're in the worst set with the worst teachers, if you set a goal and start learning yourself you can achieve anything! Seriously.

I want to go to Japan!
But that date is very far off.
