i travel to iceland this august, im from germany and can speak english, russian a bit and german of course and now i want to learn islandic, cool langua of the vikings:)
I still think english is the hardest language to learn. At least germanic languages are somewhat logical...with the exception of english of course. the few rules our language has, it breaks constantly! not to mention kids take english from kindergarten through 12th grade (required) and STILL don't even get the basics. then again, it's also because my peers don't care (ignore my lack of capitalization).
the days come from the germanic (iceland's native gods by different names) mythology. Monday is the moon, tuesday is tyr, wednesday was woden (Odin), thursday is thor, friday is freyja, saturday was 'bath day' but changed during the roman age, and sunday was...the sun :D I think the original name may have been Sølsdagr, but not sure...probably not.
i had to icelandic exchange person in my house!!! thanks for the videos... are so amazing...!! thank you very much because she need to learn spanish.. and i can help her a little :D learning a little icelandic language :D TAKK FYRIR
...I wanna learn icelandic but I can't roll my r's very well... will I still be understood if I attempt or will people just stare at me with a blank face?
Tu getur heyrid á enskan hreimi at hun er íslensk. (Sorry I'm not that good at Icelandic, but I'm learning)
When Icelandic people speak English it's really easy to tell that they are Icelandic. The same applies to many non-native English speaking people as well ^^,
Já, ég veit... samt ekki allir íslendingar eru með sama hreim... sumir ná alveg eðlilegum ensku hreim...;)
Yeah, I know... but still not every icelandic person has the same accent as most icelandic people... some people can speak english with a normal accent... ;)
wow, i can relate to some of the weekdays, since icelandic sounds a lot like the scandinavian viking age tounge. I'm so gonna learn this beautiful language.
In Danish: Søndag Mandag Tirsdag Onsdag Torsdag Fredag Lørdag (at least you have that one too ) Very odd that you don't have "Odinsdagur", "Thorsdagur" and "Frejadagur" or similar, as one would have expected, but "Miðvikudagur" ( mid-week-day or mid-uge-dag) etc.
I see - just that weird that it didn't happen here in Scadinavia as well then, nor in England - as you can see 6 of the weekdays in English are very similar to our Scandinavian versions.
The odd one out - "lørdag" (Saturday) - is thought to mean "washing day" - a bit remote from the rest of them :-)
Very, very difficult language for a native English speaker. The pronunciation is especially difficult. But if you're interested in Icelandic, go for it. Learning another Scandinavian language when your heart is set on Icelandic is asinine. I've recently started teaching myself Norwegian because I love Norway. It was recommended that I learn German first but did that stop me? Nah. Good luck to all linguists and polyglots.
Just go into a trance and convince yourself it's AD1000 or so *), when we could all still talk to each others around the North Sea without too much trouble.
It should be easy for you to learn Danish and Swedish, once you know Norwegian
( 80-90 % the same more or less - just slightly different spelling ).
German is far too difficult for non-Germans btw., so drop it for your own sake !
*) We probably still could, if it hadn't been for that French bastard (William the Q) in 1066

they all vernacular languages that evolved around latin, letters are pronounced in a specific way that applies to all the vernacular languages but Icelandic...this is one retarded language
@raunchycaldera Oh, I must point out to you that what you've heard isnt correct. Yes sure, icelandic is a complicated language to learn, but swedish has the most complicated grammar of todays spoken languages. And since grammar is kinda contributing i guess.. But i'm sure theres languages who has more complicated alphabet etc, but if we're lookin grammar, swedish has it. :)

thursday is fimmtudagur, and fimm is five, so i guess that thursday is the fifth day in iceland
TheJugglingjunk 8 months ago
@TheJugglingjunk which is strange, because wednesday is midvikudagur --> "mid-week day". You'd think they only have 5 days in a week.
hanspellegrims 7 months ago in playlist Common Phrases in Icelandic Language
@hanspellegrims Well, if you start from Sunday, then Wednesday is in the middle. German also uses Mittwoch (something like Midweek).
