The suspension was gas/hydraulic, with a sphere at each wheel containing the fluid and nitrogen gas, under pressure from a central pump. So there are no steel springs or shocks (dampers). On the fancier models, the steering and the brakes are also powered through this central hydraulic system. The car can be raised or lowered from the driver's seat.
The suspension design allowed the driver to retain control even if tires went flat. This saved Charles deGaulle's life in an assasination attempt while he rode in a DS. He rode in no other car afterwards. The DS is still ahead of its time. And the body style, by Italian designer Flaminio Bertoni, is really out of this world.
Keep watching. The world is changing quickly. Whatever is going on with the economy isn't finished and never will be. I would surely rather see more Citroens than Chevy Suburbans and Escalades and all that junk. So we can hope.
508 is pleasant looking, resembles some Lexus cars, so it's not particularly distinctive. Citroen C6 is a beautiful machine, a modern expression of the Citroen tradition. I like the C6 very much, and I understand it rides extremely well, as French cars often do. Wish we could have these in the US! I'd buy one in a minute.

yes, the US models had this system—at least the more expensive models did, like the DS. I don't know about the ID.

To the US, Peugeot will probably not return. I wish they would, because they're making some interesting stuff now.

@foucle The Citroen C5 (2000-2007) still have this suspension. But now, on the new Citroen C5 II (since 2007), this is now an expensive option.
If you like Peugeot-Citroen cars, take a look at the new Peugeot 508, may be you will like it, I think his design could match with the US market.

@SuperBunkerbuster Only the low-end models have classic springs. All the middle and high-end ones have the "hydractive" suspension.
