  • hi other sean martin students. Go SRJC!

  • oh no, another liberal who mistakes his activism with buddhist practice

  • Thank you for uploading. A lotus for you my dear friends.

  • it's *Thich* Nhat Hanh -- pls correct !

  • Fantastic.Wonderful.Two great heart/minds meet in soul/spirit conversation..Psychedelic communication,like intimate flame of love,pray continue...

  • So damn beautiful! Thank you!

  • How can any "human" not feel thankful for people such as these who know the root of all evil or love is in our own minds.

Allowing external influencers to manipulate us to break our bonds as ONENESS is what has caused all the sicknesses in the world today.

  • Here's a smile and another high five to add for the love given in this very special video. I'm using it in my meditation class at a community college in Arizona. Blessings to all.

  • First one have to love oneself and be happy before one can love others....and understanding deeply the momentary nature of everything will help. But mind and reactions are tricky

  • perfect for today.... much love.

  • @TheJourney: you can find the entire interview on myspace (dot com) /ramdass/videos/ram-dass-interviews-thick-nhat-hahn-part-1/35558253

(Youtube won't let me leave the link)

  • I respected him, but I wonder what does he think about his Bat Nha Temple incident in VN lately

  • was awesome, though

  • I wanna hear the rest :(

  • What a wonderfull human being

  • GRACIAS INFINITAS

  • Isn't it great that this is an interview, but really it is a conversation.

  • "A human being is like a television set with millions of channels.... We cannot let just one channel dominate us. We have the seed of everything in us, and we have to recover our own sovereignty."

    — Thich Nhat Hanh

  • @CrackTheVeil35 I agree. Repressed anger is bad. It hurts yourself. Controlled anger is good and sometimes necessary. No anger ....then your are dead.

  • Thank you :O) Peace -

  • these dudes are so aware and awakened and i bow to their inner aplomb

  • anger as with good reason as jesus showed to farisear in sinagogh as they were

using it as a market place. and anger to change the other.anger to change the bother is waist of time and self poisening, self distruction .if you can understand the other

you can save your energy. because anger is a negative enenrgy but still is an enenrgy. if the situation wich is the cause of your anger you can change your

attitude or you can change your place without being attached with anger.

    BNK !!!

  • @arjunadadaji1 Everything in relation to Krishna, Jesus became angry and this was fully curtailed in the Father, he became loving and this was fully curtailed in the Father, all his thoughts, deeds, actions, feelings, and everything else were real because they were curtailed in relation to God. What you said was very wise, it depends on the situation.. and if you can curtail everything in divine understanding the lower emotions will be subordinated to absolute truth.

  • It was funny how Ram Dass tried to be all political, but Thict Nhat Hahn just stayed focued on spirituality. Socialism and social justice aren't spiritual. They're the opposite of spiritual. I bet Ram Dass didn't even hear Hahn saying that.

People who do drugs become liberals. People who meditate and pray become enlightened.

  • it seems like there's more to this interview. Is there a part two?

  • Interesting to read comments interperting a calm voice as boring or justfying anger as being rooted in humanity rather than ignorance. Anyone who is familiar with what Thich Nhat Hanh experienced during the war or his efforts to promote peace & understanding, know what courage he has and why he won the Nobel Peace Prize. I wonder if flannelliz would like to present their credentials.

  • Anger is part of life. Jesus got angry many times.

  • @ruzickaw I think that's a big part of the discussion - anger is a part of us, and not to be disregarded, but we can't be ruled by the irrationality that can stem from it. Sometimes our anger directs us to necessary action, like Jesus cleansing the temple of the money changers, but it is essential to invite our compassion to temper our anger. In the end, Jesus' anger was rooted in his love for humanity - he was angry when greed found its way into God's perfect love.

  • @flannelliz My anger is rooted in my humanity. I don´t want to become such a boring guy as Thich Nhat Hanh.

Listen to his repressed voice. That comes when you repress your natural impulses.

  • @ruzickaw ...just curious, but are you familiar with Thicht Nhat Hanh or Buddhism? The point isn't repression - it's control. Either you control your anger, or it controls you. It's useful - righteous anger draws us to things we must fight, like oppression, persecution, and injustice, but when allow our anger to control our responses, more often than not we hurt ourselves as much as we hurt our perceived enemies.

  • @ruzickaw Thicht Nhat Hanh has experienced a lifetime of violence and persecution, and decided to direct his anger towards positive change of the world. He's anything but boring. :-) And Jesus' teaching direct us in a similar way - He teaches us to love and pray for our enemies. Even as He died on the cross, He prayed for His tormentors.

  • @flannelliz A lifetime of violence and persecution? Hahah! He spent most of his "lifetime" in the West, with no

"persecution". And i insist: he is boring.

  • @ruzickaw How is anything we do as humans not be natural? Its seems as that if anger is created in the mind and the desire to repress that anger in the same mind, then the repression is just as organically created as the anger itself, correct?

  • I wish to visit plum village

  • anyone else feel seduced by Ram Dass's voice in a creepy kind of way?

  • > Ram Dass interviews Thicht Nhat Hanh

usually and probably correctly spelled "Thich Nhat Hanh", isn't it?

  • @wda013 if you are the spelling police, please present your credentials.

  • Thank You Ram Dass and Thicht Nhat Hanh

  • Love is the answer.

  • i love this

  • helps me to forgive that angry aspect of self.

  • you know, I often try these things on top of my christian beliefs which actually have many parallels but what I find is that I have so many worries and fears that it's impossible for me to live in the moment and just enjoy breathing. It just came to me recently that by practicing these methods along with my religious beliefs will help me take care of the present moment that will in turn help me to take care of my problems. I love Thich Nhat Hanh

  • Thank you for posting. Something now on the edge of my mind I'm near recalling.

  • Wow. Thich Nhat Hanh is amazing. Absolutely brilliant and poetic wisdom. _/\_

  • Words of Wisdom.

  • Thank you for uploading this. This is a wonderful video. I just wanted to comment that you spelled his name wrong. There is no "t" in his first name. His name is spelled Thich Nhat Hanh. Anyway, thank you for uploading this!

  • Samadhi is not concentration!

  • @fullmoonsunrise - Samadhi is a state of complete consciousness. Full consciousness yields full concentration. It's literally tomato tomahto. :P

  • @ujin765 You mean it is like Furka and Burka?

  • thank you! is this the whole of the interview or is there another part of it? it seems a bit cut at the end.

May you be happy and have the benefits of sharing this with all of us. Metta

  • i have no comment about the video, i just wanted to mental high five everyone who read this. ;)

dont act like you dont want to smile and high five me back.

  • What a beautiful human encounter,we are blessed venerable Thich Nhat Hanh is always so soft and deep on his anwsers,God is shining on this two men ,

    thank you for sharing

  • Have had the mind expanding opportunity to experience Ram Dass live when my friend Jonathan Anderson invited me to hear him speak to the capacity crowd of 'seekers' in attendance at the Arlington St Church in Boston circa 1970-71. The exact date escapes me because "Baba" Ram Dass's delivery of the understanding of his book 'Be Here Now" has been my constant ever since that seemingly miraculous but certainly transformative encounter. Love is always Jonathan; I realized that at the same time too.

  • Oh, to have been in the same room with the indescribable light of compassion that emanates from these two souls, these great teachers of humanity!

  • i LOVE the way he says lucid

  • Thich Nhat Hanh is truly a living Bodhisattva. Thanks for sharing this great love and wisdom.

  • wonderful words...so positive...

  • This video is a gift to humanity.

    Thank you

  • video ending seemed?

  • This is kind of off topic, but when monk chants, why do they tap the gong?

  • @msdontprocrastinate The gong is a sign that helps you with realizing the present moment. The sound of the gong happens in the present, if you listen to the gong you are in the present moment. Mantras are there for compassion and the eightfold path.

  • watch this video.

    live a little.

    watch again.

    oh! i see...

you are slowly getting through to me.

  • theese men changed my life for the better in every being mindful took away all my fear and worry and i have helped others thankyou so much

  • Working tirelessly? Ram Dass and Hanh have continuously worked on their Self Importance. Sitting on your ass in Meditation, not having any family responsibilities, and always getting free room and board is the Trustfund way. The buddhist always talk about Silencing the Mind, and then spend all their time talking up a storm of confusion.

  • Neither of these guys have Worked a day in their life.

  • @xwaystranger Thich Nhat Hanh has worked tirelessly for 70 years to help Vietnamese during and after the Vietnam War.

What have you done you silly fool?

  • @xwaystranger

I think you have it backwards, actually. Neither of these guys have ever stopped working—even for just one day of their lives.

  • @ejlorge So lets look at the facts. 1. Ram Dass: son of one of the wealthiest men on the east coast (railroads). Travels to Indian and returns to set up ashram with Trustfund money. Becomes Gay (lets no one know, because women will know that's why he is not coming on to them= spiritual) Age 60, has heart attack. Still hasn't worked. 2. Thich Nhat Hanh: becomes monk at age 16 (hasn't worked). Wealthy parents send him to Princeton University. Becomes Gay. Still hasn't worked.

  • @xwaystranger I sense much anger in you, young padawan

  • there is no way of holding anger..! it is just a stupid idea..!

  • @pradeep414

If you don't ACT on your anger and just observe it objectively, WHAT'S THAT???

  • @goog2k From my own ideas., I can say that watching objectively is an impossible phenomenon.., i donot noe if it is ever possible., What we can easily do is ACT subjectively., that is quite possible . isn't !

  • @pradeep414 Can you watch a movie objectively?

I doubt you've ever sat and watched your "monkey mind" during a week or longer meditation retreat.

Our minds and our lives are like a movie.

If we simply react to our emotions without any objective wisdom we're really like dumb animals.

If we learn how to "let go" of self-centered attachments, it becomes quite clear. Unfortunately, most of us are so blinded & attached to our self-centered opinions & judgments it's like being in prison or hell.

  • Comment removed

  • @goog2k u sund nice.. but it's not end of world..

  • @goog2k But careful of ur fucking philosofi

  • @pradeep414 JEEZ, I thought Thais were mostly polite Buddhists.

    Boy, was I wrong.

How's that prison you're in? Sounds kind of rough.

    LOL!!!

  • @goog2k I donno if it matter if i m thai.. i m not though

r u rachel maddow...i mean from ur vid ..i thought..

  • @pradeep414 It is gud to be popular i guess.. but donot worry

  • @pradeep414 If you truly understand what YOU are then you understand what I am and what everything is.

    So, what are you?

  • @goog2k i like u lady, thank u

  • @pradeep414 Oops!!!

I got you confused with someone else.

    That explains it.

    LOL!!!

  • Thank you for your beautiful upload. Amazing.

  • Amazing to c these 2 incredibly loving people together - thank u YouTube for having this for the world to share - opens our hearts and minds

  • Let us enjoy the time we can listen to the words of these great teachers.

  • @piotrluka Yor a fucking idiot puke.Keep your hatred to your self lowlife slime.

  • @eastwood3891 did you listen to the interview before reacting as you did ?

  • @eastwood3891 You have acknowledged your anger. This is a good. I think you understand loving kindness more than you are aware of. Otherwise, your anger would have blinded you to this interview which actually crossed your path. You have to have been open on some level to have even accessed the interview. I would encourage you to listen again with an attitude of loving acceptance. Ask yourself ... do you ENJOY being angry or if you would rather let it go. Nameste.

  • anyone interested in this kind of thing please add me as a friend

    or just message me

im looking to start a good conversation!

    thanks

    peace and love

  • @MickeyLWalker I am interested in peace and love

  • his teachings are amazing

  • @TOMP66666

Hardly. The government of Vietnam only allowed him to return to visit in 2005 and the trip was filled with controversy, he himself had concerns that the trip might be used as propaganda by the Vietnamese gov't, suggesting to the world that religious freedom is improving there, while abuses continue.I hope you or I can accomplish 1/100 as much in our life. Peace!

  • Thank you for the video.

  • Is there more to this interview? I want to hear the reply to the closing comment/question.

  • nice video

  • but Ram does blabber

  • @Leafy1984 :-) Sure does!

  • Such a Sincere reply.... Good teacher's s action, speech and thought are always GREAT......May everyone understand the impermanence, suffering and non-self..

  • Thanks for this beautiful video.

  • "You've got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, 'cause you might not get there." -- Yogi Berra

  • awesome

  • that calmed you down a bit RD!!

    nice to see ha ha

  • What a nice gift this sort of thing is.

Much like reading Jefferson's letters to Adams.

Here you have two men who while being fully human and full of weakness and frailties that afflict us all, shine a light into the darkness of illusion.

    Thanks for posting this

  • @ptheodor impermanence also allow us to apreciate the present moment.

  • @InfoRoom You are right.

  • Argh, wish I could have heard Thay's answer to that last question. Wonderful interview; very insightful questions and very insightful answers, as one might expect.

  • Mindfulness is essential to realize all other things, like anger. Since all things come from the mind, then only mindfulness can control and transform destructive energies to constructive ones. If destruction is required, then this too must be done with mindfulness.

  • I like this man, and feel blessed that he is sharing his wisdom. Peace, Love and Happiness to all, Always.

  • Great stuff, and much needed. I am stuck in an abusive relationship, and my wife's arrogant, disrespectful behavior often makes me angry. I must be mindful and hold my anger like a child. It's not necessary to say something shitty back to her after she has said something shitty to me. When she says something shitty, it reflects on her, not me. And when I reply with something equally shitty, it reflects on me, not her. If I don't reply, maybe she'll get bored and find something else to do.

  • you are great. You understood Thay's advices.

  • Meditation

    is it hypnosis?

    no it is de-hypnosis

  • Two very beautiful and wise beings.

  • Interest to watch the entiire interview... His answer about non-self would be?

  • Yes i'm interessted to watch the whole interview of TNH and Ram Dass

@Lilly0304 WORD! True Words you spoke!

  • Comment removed

  • @rithmanavy do a google search of: Ram Dass interviews Thicht Nhat Hanh

    for full interview

  • Kind of sad that people so often feel the need to put down and insult - if one does not like something - just don't listen to it or watch it. For some these words are very helpful and inspirational - I wish judging would stop because those who judge does not make their judgement true - but they define themselves as people who need to judge.

  • this man (thich naht hanh) is incredibly beautiful, and his words and the sound of his voice make me want to break down and cry. This is as happy and simple as you can get when it comes to the spoken or stated word. Silence is an entirely different phenomenon though, I believe.

  • He has become like a physical embodiment of gentleness and love. He is fearless.

  • touché

  • its all good

  • one moron. right here. :-)

  • are you an asshole or do just not understand?

  • maybe I understand too much...

  • *A-U-M* Bhodisattva

  • When someone has seen and known unimaginable suffering and offers this teaching, all we need to do is to sit in front of our screen, listen, learn, and be grateful for the opportunity.

  • very well said.

  • Notes - Hold your anger (sadness, fear) like a mother holds a baby.

  • i feel i already know what these guys are talking about, they just seem to be illustrating it for me in words.

  • your buddha-nature already knows :)

  • This man is amazing.

  • true wisdom comes from the observation of lives and not just finding its faults: but its treasures.

Thicht Nhat Hanh, u carry on being an amazing being! x) divulge your thoughts, sharpen our minds..

  • Love and peace are the ultimate goal.

  • impossible to detrstoy, wen you live in the now.

  • I love both of these guys.

  • Great interview with Thict Nhat Hanh!!! Thank you!!! Just what I was looking for! :)

  • Ram Dass is awesome why all the hating?

  • To paraphrase:

"Many people cry and suffer when a person they love leaves them . . . But when this person was there, we did not do what we could have to make them happy. We were not mindful of the moment, the impermanence of the experience, the chance to love those we love."

  • ram dass is a tool

  • I was so hoping to hear Thich Nhat Hanh's response to Ram Dass' musings on the difference between Interbeing and Non-Self. Otherwise, this was amazing.

  • great interview!! thanks for posting!

  • Thich Nhat Hanh is wonderful, but the interviewer is a tool.

  • You clearly have no Idea who he is. But, agreed Thich Nhat Hanh is a gift.

  • far from it...

  • One paradox of the dualistic mind is that the only thing we need to experience fulfillment is the direct realization that there is nothing we need to experience fulfillment. Nothing to achieve, nowhere to go. It is the seeking and searching that perpetuates the illusion...we are what we have been searching for all the time.

  • we tend to think that emotions like anger are part of our ''identity''.

so as long as we keep that mindset we won't be able to accept and let go the anger

  • this is the calmest interview of all time.

  • I see the energy of anger and negative emotions as a motivator to understand what is *really* going on. If we saw reality, there would be no anger. In this way all negative emotions are positive, showing us where we're off track, and stimulating us to find a real solution (no matter how difficult or long it takes). And pretending doesn't count. :)

  • Why understand what is going on, when it is an illusion anyway. The quickest and most direct method is just to know your self. Abide in the self. Once you find it, all is taken care of. It is so painful trying to take care of each feat of anger and jealousy like that, when the God in you can do that once you find him. Find who you are, do not take the long and rough road.
