This guy talks and rambles for over 10 minutes calling the MLS a joke. The real joke is him trying to act like he has the slightest clue about anything. He said Soccer has never been big in the United States when in fact there was a short stint in the 1970's until the early 1980's where arguably the most popular league in the world was right here called the NASL. The best players in the world came here to play, filling out our largest football stadiums over 70,000 people for each game.
You are such a moron. I'm not sure what was more funny; when you tried to use big words to make your self sound smart, or that you actually thought you knew what you were talking about.
ABsolutly spot on...AND who ever posted down there its only three years younger than the premier league is a fucking idiot the changed the name of the league nomber of times...most teams in UK started late 1800 and early 1900
Let's see... Soccer is the largest youth sport in the US. Nearly all high schools of any size are fielding teams and the quality is improving exponentially every year. Put MLS on national TV consistently (not ESPN2) and it will blossom. The fans are there but the coverage isn't. This guy is an idiot.
If what's wrong with soccer in America is about the lack of making money, then every sport would have this problem. Sports in General is not a cash-rich industry.
couldnt help but notice u said MLS isnt sold 2 other european countrys. MLS is shown on FIVE here in the UK as well as Setanta.....across europe. Ive had an account 4 2 years and never felt the need 2 post, but that was terrible. Wow bud, the way you presented ur argument was horrific. Very slow very boring
as far as mls sucking compared to the epl, la liga, serie a, etc. i definitely disagree but it doesnt really matter if it is or not. the bottom line is the league's getting noticeably better each year and it sucks for him that he's gonna be busy watching other shit once we become an elite league.
this guy's view on soccer's popularity amongst kids in high school and older is really outdated. players that actually have talent stick with it because of youth clubs and academies in this country that are some of the best in the world. those that dont stick with it playwise, follow it after they stop playing, not necessarily MLS but world soccer. im at college right now and have seen at least three times more soccer jerseys on kids than any other sport.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Have you ever watched a MLS game? Look at the Superliga now. Three MLS advanced to the semifinals. Recently, the Chicago Fire played to a draw versus Celtic FC. the MLS All-Star beat Celtic this year and Chelsea last year. Yes, MLS is a young league, but we have made MAJOR strides in becoming a dominant league in the world. The EPL has been around for over a century. So shut up about what you don't know.
There actually is a competition involving MLS teams and teams from other countries. It's the CONCACAF Champions Cup. It's been won by an MLA team twice.
The MLS is doing its best to become more widely known and trying to improve, you cannot fault it on its effort, La Galaxy getting David Beckham is a great step for the league and im sure in 10 years or so it will be bigger, regards to the t-shirt you should have an england one on.
Although this guy seems like a bit of a wacko and almost put me to sleep, he does have some valid points. I would have to somewhat disagree with MLS sucking so bad cause it definately has progressed. As far as Beckham. I dont think he is past his prime, I think he was never all that great. Overrated. A GOOD player at best. Good free kicks and good passing skills. nd he lost me on that whole culture crap. FORZA INTER!
you are not a commentator at ESPN OR FOXSPORTS... so you don't know anything about soccer... you can say what ever you want but you don't know anything about soccer.
And for no one caring about soccer during high school and after? Bullshit, my brother just made Division 1 college soccer (Drake University) also I'm workin on making college soccer. So please, shut your mouth about what you do not know.
The MLS not being good, we're not, but we have products overseas, DaMarcus Beasley just won a title in Holland. However, the MLS posterboy Landon Donovan, you guys can say all you want. He just got pissy when he came back to Germany because he didnt play and he couldnt play like the Europeans. So the poster child sucks.
Ok moron let me get you up to speed. It is not "British Culture", the ENTIRE WORLD plays soccer. In the mid 1900s soccer was the shit. We had huge audiences during the Cosmos era. Also, we've been playing soccer longer than Brazil. Due to making the championship game on a Wednesday at noon everyone lost interest.

Some good points. However it is the traditional sports journalists and coaches who are frightened of soccer becoming more popular. Baseball, ice hockey and nfl are losing participants whereas soccer is growing as a participant sport. I think soccer will grow but it needs a home grown star. There has never been a homegrown usa world class soccer player.
I enjoy watching MLS. It's a competitive league and it's getting better. Know what's wrong with soccer in north america? Dumb ass pretentious fans at home who turn their nose up at the domestic product instead of supporting it.
the mls is bound to be one of the biggest leagues in the world... far from it... but they're getting there. Especially this year.. with all of these good players coming (beckham, blanco, j.p. angel, schelotto etc)..This will attract more fans. the mexican league is still better, but the mls is catching up.
Sorry ppl.beckham and angel r way past their best,i lov football,iv watched it my whole life, the mls needs a decade 2 compete with the best,Currently the best league is the barclays premiership, before that seria A waz the best, how long did it take 4 britan to get where there at,The mls needs investment, new talent not imported talent, but i think u guz r on the right past,Please ppl dnt say adu is a good player, plz,im african and im rooting 4 african players but adu has no chance
I agree with both sides here: on the one hand, MLS has made a lot of progress, yet it is a terrible league.
Will it be in the future? I hope not. The MLS has been smart building soccer specific stadiums, learning from the failed NASL. To MLS fans: results in friendlies against Chelsea, Celtic, Man U, etc mean nothing. They are the same as Spring Training games in Baseball.
I support the NY team, but my first team will always be Celtic of course.
your a faggot and have nothing to do, MLS has made so much progress through its years of existence, and thats a lot, how the hell do you expect it to have the history as the english premier league in just 12 years?? you have no knowledge what so ever!!

You think fans give a shit if it sucks or not? It's our sport, it's our local team, and we're going to supoprt it. I cant believe I listened to 13 min. of your faggoty voice, please stop breathing. You are so ignorant but arrogant enough to make a 13 minute video of your ramblings. You are the reason football is not the biggest sport here. You are an idiot. Please die.
I was thinking the same thing. If you don't support it, how can it get the finances and talent to get better. A paradox for this douche, but for me it's easy... follow and watch the league improve with every fan.
dude i agree with your arguement, MLS is pitiful. but learn to talk, the whole time how slow your speaking makes me want to punch the shit out of you.
I have season tickets to the Red Bulls, frankly I cant disagree with his claim. I like to think of MLS as a start out league for youngsters to get their feet, then move on to EPL or La Liga or Ligue 1 etc. I think Beckham is going to help alot with soccer in this country, he's going to get people watching without question. For now though, MLS is a 2nd rate league, it's basically a minor league system to the European leagues.
Let's face it, 4/5 of your arguments have proven baseless/void of any credibility within just one year. This isn't a challenge, this is an honest intrigue, I would like to know what else you can say that will be proven wrong within the coming years.
How narcissistic do you need to be to put a camera on your no-name who-the-hell-is-this-guy buck-toothed mug and think anyone cares what you think? When's the last time you've actually sat through an entire MLS match? When is the last time you've watched an MLS match on TV? Don't answer, I don't care...enjoy your couch, your FSC, and your Setanta. Are you still talking? He's still talking!
America is part of CONCACAF and not UEFA-- see above answer for cup info. The US National Team is also gearing up for The CONCACAF Gold Cup and the CONMEBOL Copa America-- which we were invited to participate in.
I think this is a terrible analysis of MLS as an entitiy at the moment. When does a sports league ever succeed in its primary phase? Look at the type of play from '96 and look at it now--it's come by leaps and bounds.
I'd love to see you boot up and play against RBNY or Galaxy as you said you could out of High School. You put your skills up against Claudio Reyna, Cobi Jones, John Wolyniec, Landon Donovan, David Beckham, need I go on?
IF MLS doesn't succeed it will be because of folks like you who demand a top-notch product immediately. It's all about great talent, fluid football, and you want it now.
"Is America involved in any cup like that? No they're not involved in a North America Cup, they're not involved in an across-the-pond cup".
Are they involved in a North America Cup? Yes. It's called the CONCACAF Champion's Cup.
Are they involved in an Across-The-Pond Cup? There's a reason why "Tots" (so clearly you know english footy well, because that's what Tottenham is called for short-- the Tots) is involved in the UEFA Cup and no team in America isn't.
That guy has his nose so far up a narrow UEFA that he can't see what's going on (or he choses to ignore it) in his own backyard. He can enjoy cheering for clubs he has no historical connection to. We can root for our league.
I would say that MLS has less own goals than Football league 1,2 or 3. About the same as Champions league. And the Keepers aren't that good? They are US's top football export, and you can't say that those particular guys are rarities.
Then there's Claudio Reyna (Captain America lol) and Juan Pablo Garcia (MEX).. Some past star players were: Brian McBride and Mo Johnston.. so yeah, those are my comments. Great vids, plz keep on posting lol. And once in a while, make a new vid bout MLS, I love ppl's insight on it. So yeah, great stuff.
Thirdly, I also agree that if MLS doesn't have games against international teams, then it's basically --excuse my language-- j@ck $hit. We need that international star kinda glory so yeah, but then again European clubs play against other international friendlies too.. Last point I wanna point out is the star players.. lol they have David Beckham (HUGE NEWS).. he may seem out of his prime or what not, but COME ON it's Beckham lol..
view the video response of DC United in international competition (the CONCACAF Campion's cup, the winner of this ongoing tourney goes to play UEFA Champions League winner among others)
And the only reason why the players may seem amateur-ish sometimes is because MLS focuses on grassroots programs and you know.. domestic players. It doesn't want to focus on international players as much, after all MLS is trying to shwocase American/Canadian talent.
Um Watch DC United play. They have a ton of South Americans (2 Brazilians, 2 Argentines, a Bolivian) a guy who wants to be like Drogba (down to his hair style) from the Ivory Coast and a kid they just signed from Fulham.
Each club has its own philosophy. DC's clearly isn't what you're saying/
You can read up on the stadiums on google, but here are some of them: Columbus Crew Stadium, The Home Depot Center, Pizza Hut Park, Toyota Park, Dick's Sporting Goods Park, BMO Field (Toronto FC), Red Bull Park (under construction), Sandy Stadium (under construction), and as for the other teams, they have plans underway..
Second point, the whole stadium thing I agree too.. Football... err American Football stadiums don't provide the atmosphere for football (soccer.. cuz football is soccer) games. Unless they're packed, but then that's basically impossible. But MLS is starting to have each team build their own SSS (soccer specific stadia) so that's a good boost to the sport.
First of all harmon, I love your analysis. At least you put in thought into what you say, rather than some other people who ramble on with no point. I know you're not too fond of MLS, but give it a couple of years, let it grow slowly, conservatively, and who knows? It actually might become noteworthy from itnernational countries.
If you have a premiership team you follow, who is it ?. I do think that if america embraced the game in the same way the rest of the world does, i think it could only be a good thing for you because it would be a licence to print money for one and mabey not make you appear to be so self alienated as a nation on the world stage
lol. I agree the MLS is crap. Maybe David Beckham can make it a bit better now. I doubt it though because even Pele and George Best couldn't make it bigger. Just move over here!
i don't know much about mls,but on sky sports in england, the football matches which are going to be shown the next week, get advertised basically every break, to the point where it gets annoying, and i doubt they do that in america, because if they advertised american football that much in england i think i would end up watching it
MLS is not as good as the EPL, but it won't fail. MLS is creating a Champion's League tournament with the Mexican league, immigration will change what Americans like. More $ is coming in = MUCH better players soon. Also, the business model is TOTALLY different from the NASL. There is a generation of American's who have played the game, watched it on TV etc. their whole lives. Times change. Boxing and horse racing used to be the most popular sports in America. Where are they now?
hey harmonmsp I kind of agree with what you are saying, but to correct you there is a tournament called the Concacaf Cup and it is exclusive to this region of the world, though not as big as UEFA Champions league.
PS: could you add 'MLS' as one of your tags to this video more accessible? I found it by chance.
Sure thing; just did. :) I am wondering if you are confusing the national team with MLS teams ... CONCACAF is an international team division, not applicable to leagues. Inter-league play is what I had meant to suggest. Am I incorrect here?
Sorry to say this but yes you are incorrect. And MLS is still growing. I don't think it's the best league in the world, but it isn't the worst. I just have a problem with the US national team recruiting so heavilly from MLS.
Yeah, the international club play is what I'm referring to when I say you are incorrect. But as far as your view on MLS I feel you are correct, however, I think you're a little harsh. But I enjoy your videos man.
There is a consumer market for soccer now, and it is growing each year on every level. You live in Cal. Look at all of the 'Rec' leagues. The MLS all-stars beat Chelsea 1-0 and D.C. United tied Real Madrid 1-1. Bad teams don't obtain these results. I'd like to write a lot more, but there's a word limit.
Well I think Soccer is not popular in the states, just because Americans do not want to be like the rest of the world. That is why in the states people do not use the metric system that is used in most of the countries. The MLS have never been and will never be popular because Americans need to have their own unique sport that is American Football.
I agree. I also think that such an attitude is a two-edged sword. For instance, America being isolated from Europe helped them form their country and win independence quickly. But, it also keeps them out of the rest of the world and feeds a kind of self-centeredness that can lead to a lot of social backlash and, in turn, more and more use of power and prowess to get what America wants (a.k.a. Iraq War 2002-present).

Go back and watch your "Tots"

Fair enough you're a football fan, but please don't call Tottenham 'Tots'!

Times do change.
Sometimes it takes one person to popularize a sport like Micheal Jordon. Then came Shaq and Kobe.
But most importantly TV and movies.
Everyone watches it.
Every sports movie out in America is always about football, or some racial-themed football thing.
Our country doesn't want competition, because if we lose at the world cup, maybe our dignity and pride as a nation will crumble as well.
America is mostly secular, so we are binded by TV as a nation and not by faith.

So yeah, great stuff.
generalfrostx 5 years ago
Thirdly, I also agree that if MLS doesn't have games against international teams, then it's basically --excuse my language-- j@ck $hit. We need that international star kinda glory so yeah, but then again European clubs play against other international friendlies too.. Last point I wanna point out is the star players.. lol they have David Beckham (HUGE NEWS).. he may seem out of his prime or what not, but COME ON it's Beckham lol..

view the video response of DC United in international competition (the CONCACAF Campion's cup, the winner of this ongoing tourney goes to play UEFA Champions League winner among others)
jdna 4 years ago
And the only reason why the players may seem amateur-ish sometimes is because MLS focuses on grassroots programs and you know.. domestic players. It doesn't want to focus on international players as much, after all MLS is trying to shwocase American/Canadian talent.
generalfrostx 5 years ago
Um Watch DC United play. They have a ton of South Americans (2 Brazilians, 2 Argentines, a Bolivian) a guy who wants to be like Drogba (down to his hair style) from the Ivory Coast and a kid they just signed from Fulham.
Each club has its own philosophy. DC's clearly isn't what you're saying/

You can read up on the stadiums on google, but here are some of them: Columbus Crew Stadium, The Home Depot Center, Pizza Hut Park, Toyota Park, Dick's Sporting Goods Park, BMO Field (Toronto FC), Red Bull Park (under construction), Sandy Stadium (under construction), and as for the other teams, they have plans underway..
generalfrostx 5 years ago
Second point, the whole stadium thing I agree too.. Football... err American Football stadiums don't provide the atmosphere for football (soccer.. cuz football is soccer) games. Unless they're packed, but then that's basically impossible. But MLS is starting to have each team build their own SSS (soccer specific stadia) so that's a good boost to the sport.
generalfrostx 5 years ago
First of all harmon, I love your analysis. At least you put in thought into what you say, rather than some other people who ramble on with no point. I know you're not too fond of MLS, but give it a couple of years, let it grow slowly, conservatively, and who knows? It actually might become noteworthy from itnernational countries.
generalfrostx 5 years ago
If you have a premiership team you follow, who is it ?. I do think that if america embraced the game in the same way the rest of the world does, i think it could only be a good thing for you because it would be a licence to print money for one and mabey not make you appear to be so self alienated as a nation on the world stage
mervingj 5 years ago

Where are they now?
footballer7883 5 years ago
hey harmonmsp I kind of agree with what you are saying, but to correct you there is a tournament called the Concacaf Cup and it is exclusive to this region of the world, though not as big as UEFA Champions league.
PS: could you add 'MLS' as one of your tags to this video more accessible? I found it by chance.
ateamga 5 years ago
Sure thing; just did. :) I am wondering if you are confusing the national team with MLS teams ... CONCACAF is an international team division, not applicable to leagues. Inter-league play is what I had meant to suggest. Am I incorrect here?
harmonmsp 5 years ago
Sorry to say this but yes you are incorrect. And MLS is still growing. I don't think it's the best league in the world, but it isn't the worst. I just have a problem with the US national team recruiting so heavilly from MLS.
ateamga 5 years ago
What am I incorrect about? About the international club play?
harmonmsp 5 years ago
Yeah, the international club play is what I'm referring to when I say you are incorrect. But as far as your view on MLS I feel you are correct, however, I think you're a little harsh. But I enjoy your videos man.
ateamga 5 years ago
All right, thanks for the correction, mate. I appreciate it.

I'd like to write a lot more, but there's a word limit.
pollo1970 5 years ago
Well I think Soccer is not popular in the states, just because Americans do not want to be like the rest of the world. That is why in the states people do not use the metric system that is used in most of the countries. The MLS have never been and will never be popular because Americans need to have their own unique sport that is American Football.
DanielBalseca 5 years ago
