Nice idea. But you have to think further if you really want this to work. Could you imagine life with a lot or even a view of these escalators. In the beginning it's lots of fine and innovative. After a while people get used to it....and fall into their habits by taking the escalator again. Maybe with some variation it could be interesting....

I guess that's cool, but basically you got 66% of people to waste time? How is that a good or productive idea? To me it just seems like a big annoyance for those that are within earshot. I like the "Long Drop" trash can because that served a purpose but this is just stupid because you could remove the escalator all together and make 100% of the people use the stairs without modification.

Of course in America (the most obese nation on earth), someone would fall on the stairs, sue the transit company, and be awarded millions in damages, thus ending the whole thing. Our game show court system is a major impediment to even the most benign innovation.
