James McGregor at UC Berkeley who has been defining and studying Fascism for over half a century - and pointed out that Jonah Goldberg was pseudo academic and anti-academic at the same time.

Do you think it fair and logical to use universal generalizations like his against the political opposition without bothering to define one's own terms?

I grew up with a political scientist in my household. I was taught that nothing is ever as transparent, simple or black and white as demagogues like schemefighter would have us believe.

I feel that true-believer mindsets any type are potentially dangerous trends which have a tendency to lead to the kind of fascism outlined here.

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether or not a hard line "conservative" like him actually knows the standards of debate and critical thinking, or if they intentionally abandon all in favor of appealing to the ignorant.

I don't know which supposition is more insulting to the human race, but I opt to believe the former, in hopes that people in general are smarter than I give them credit for. Optimistic or naive? Discuss!

We're all wrong some times but republicans tend to have a moral absolutist philosophy. It's tough to debate with some one who is not willing to consider that all issues are not black and white. I'm actually a fan of the (crazy) Ron Paul, a republican. He has a more pragmatic approach to things than most.

Yeah, I noticed that "tend" "usually" and "sometimes" aren't on the GOPAC list of descriptive terminology regarding the left.

"Always", "All" and "Ever" apparently are fair game, though.

My point is that ad hominems, non sequiturs, first accusation and bullying seem to be regular tactics employed by right wing pundits and propagandists, and that these measures are unfit for debate or rational argument. The question is not IF it's being done intentionally, but WHY. Ignorance, malice or both?

ignorance I think. I was raised that way, but after yeas of being wrong I gave up on being right for the most part. After I thought about it I was wrong to single out republicans. Seriously, if you don't generalize and argue subjectively as a rule, I'll listen. Even if your views were diametrically opposed, (it's not) I'll still give someone a shot who will also listen, and be secure about an exchange of ideas. Kind of backwards that we should live in this "free" society , and be afraid of other people's opinions, as if they're contagious. Cold war PTSD, just insecurity or a bit of both?

:) I'm not old enough for cold war ptsd. my objective was to critic the prevailing method of debate of both conservatives and liberals. They're more of a call to arms for the faithful than a genuine appeal for converts, to borrow some religious right terminology. People who don't come to their own opinions, generally don't like having to defend them.
