@yellowonetwo my take... this is but a microcosym of much of what the film is about. he is/ they are now comfortably married for a while now and so simple things start to slip a bit-- from familiairty. she asks how her hair looks and he, without even turning around says "great"...when she calls him on it his reply is, "you always look great". nice sentiment- just not an in-the-moment one, and lets face it, women want your full attention all the time... or as much of it as is possible.
@ajacqx thats an interesting viewpoint alright, i find the whole party scene that comes next very strange given the distance between them both after the intimacy of the house.... id love to see the apparent scenes deleted by warner brothers before they killed kubrick
min 0:34 is the "key" to the whole fu&%in film. "Alice" undressing to a gigantic pyramid shape in the window formed by the parted drapes...Kubrick was murdered for this.
....CONTINUED COMMENT: but now, I think it's great. And being an insane Kubrick nut, I could never dislike any of his movies, because they've always been so important to me. I would never have decided to become a filmmaker if it wasn't for Stanley Kubrick. I'll never forget him.
Kubrick usually favors two premises for a film: Sex or war. This one is about sex. And the way they were able to present it was very magnificent. Combining erotica with a psychological enigma is simply genius. The film plays out as a puzzle in which you have to try to put the pieces together. I enjoy this film more each time I watch it, and I seem to understand it better than I did last, and this can be common for a Kubrick film. In fact, when I first saw this movie in theaters, I loathed it....

i mean the morgue scene-a blond white woman is pulled out by a single black man,his face as if saying" well thats it".actually there are other similar scenes with blacks(staff, workers esp cops)staying around bodies of white people who are posed in humiliating way,and are as if the blacks dont give a damn(look at" bad boys ('95)"(bad movie d fit better) or "15 minutes of fame".there too, blacks stay at the body of a murdered white blond woman (plays prostitute)and are simply talking.

we do not truly know the ending...which is a shame. Rumor has it that studio executives altered the ending to make it more cinematic, but we will never know, will we?
If I may contribute something to this discussion: The room first seen, where Alice is taking her dress off, she clearly just tried on, while deciding what to wear, is definitely the Hartford's apartment. You can see the white classicist collumns, the red curtains and the beige carpet. When the scene goes to Bill, you can recognize that all these elements are present in the apartment. Thus, it must be their place, not Ziegler's or anyone else's. Moreover, conspiracy theories sound very far off.
@Dabrema23 dude, min 0:35 opening credits shot, its Alice´s apt alright. No trace of Bill Hartford, just women´s high heels on the floor, couple tennis rackets...Oh and a giant pyramid shape on the window made by the parted drapes. Question is tho, how could an art dealer afford a sprawling 3 million dollar Central Park West pad? Hmmm. Cut to the Christmas party...Szandor´s back for more.
Tis definitely the season =) How about when he pops home and they're doing a math problem about who has more money. Or the nude painting on his office wall that looks like him. Possibly the most perfect movie ever made, and yes a perfect tush on nicole. RIP Stan - thanks!
I adore Stanley Kubrick - one of my all time favorite directors. Eyes Wide Shut was impressive movie with all these natural scenes, amazing acting (especially Nicole Kidman - supertalent), suspense, thrill...
I have to admit, even though the film's theme is about unconscious desires/fantasies, Nicole Kidman sports a great backside and body for 8-9 seconds in the opening sequence. I wonder how they managed to pull that off without receiving an "NC-17" rating or her feeling uncomfortable...
I watched the extras on my dvd and think she doesn't feel uncomfortable because she's a great actress and she's a professional. Kubrick knew all this, that's why he chose her for the role. I don't think anyone could've made it better than Nicole Kidman. Her acting is flawless. And I think Kubrick chose Cruise just because he was her husband... because Stanley was a great director and surely didn't think Cruise was an amazing actor. Which in fact he isn't.
You're right about him not needing great actors... Ryan O'Neal doesn't act so well in Barry Lyndon but that movie is a masterpiece anyway... I'm just saying it's good when both acting and directing is excellent... ;)
each scene in this movie has to be deeply analyzed, this movie is not for your common moviegoer that goes to see The Hangover or something like that, not saying that The Hangover is a bad film, but it is lowbrow, this film Eyes Wide Shut is too high brow.
Folks... I enjoyed the movie (is why I posted it)... but it's not "new religion"... it's a movie....film. I get the impression from some of the response I've seen to this and some other posts that some of us take this stuff WA-A-A-Y too seriously. Name-calling, status-climbing, race-baiting, my dad could whup your dad kinda stuff. Can't we all just get aloof--- uh-h, I mean get-along...?!
@76special i couldnt agree more with someone. Stanley Kubrick was a genius in this fine art that so many people take for granted and choose to just not recognise. This film was truly his greatest contribution to it.
@topham6 This movie is a masterpiece but we never really saw it..You see Warner had cut out 25 minutes drom it !! Kubrick had a deal with them but died sudently and they edited his film before anybody els wuld see it. I heard the scenes are about "mind controll" people shuld demant Warner to show this scenes
The opening title music is "Waltz 2 from Shostakovich's Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra", for years misidentified as the composer's Jazz Suite 2... Wikipedia
He, SK, didn't receive so nice critic for this movie.
The 1st time I saw it I was just carried away to a place like 'Phanteon of movies' just to think about this Director who make me shiver every time I see a movie made by him. For me it's just a fantastic sublime wonderful movie.
I don't believe the next scene proves anything about the first. In fact, I disagree that both scenes are shot in the same room. It appears to me that the first cooly sexy scene takes place in a walk-in closet, and in the second there is an unopened door to where we do not know.
Does Hartford even fu&%in know ? Alice used to be an art dealer but her business went south (coincidence?)when she got serious bout marriage. I sez she used to be a Sommerton whore, but now she has fu&%in nightmares about her past life cuz she`s an MK Ultra victim (ie: The Naval officer) with all those memories locked in her head.
What? The movie repeatedly likens financial success to prostitution, especially when it comes to Alice and the costume shop's daughter, but you seem to be implying something literal with absolutely no evidence.
Alice, has had a "dream".These memories come to Alice during a "dream", which in reality appears to be a repressed memory; a "dream" featuring a "Naval Officer" with a penetrating stare. A man who seemingly hypnotized her for a brief instant, as they passed each other in a hotel lobby. I draw a parallel between the "Naval Officer" to Naval Intelligence, a branch of the Armed Forces that has long been an active participant in MK-ULTRA operations.
I believe Alice is a victim of Monarch (MK-Ultra) programming. When--toward the end of the film--Dr. Bill's missing mask is discovered upon a pillow next to his sleeping wife, a message has been delivered, clear and simple, by the mind controllers hounding Dr. Bill : They have all along had access to his wife, since the very beginning.
Min 0:37 - Look at Alice`s apt carefully as she undresses. IMHO thats the key to the whole movie. Notice that the very next scene with Hartford looking for his sh&%
takes place in the very same room, but oh my little brothers, how things have changed...Whose apt is it really ?
MK-Ultra / mind controlled sex-slaves. Thats what this movie is really all about!!! :o
So are you saying that Alice is actually undressing in someone's else's apartment? Perhaps her lover's apartment? I thought the two tennis racquets might signify that it is Ziegler as he mentions how he plays tennis later in the movie.
Yes I am aware of that, it doesn't mean you need to shit on it. If you dislike the film then so be it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but he is one of the greatest directors of all time, thus he deserves some respect.
He's got respect where it's due, but people's sycophantic bullshit reverence tends to shout down valid pannings of movies made by celebrated directors that are just crap, this being a prime example.
I don't know. I still think it takes a good couple of watches to actually appreciate this movie's worth. I've always enjoyed it as much as...well, let's say Lolita or some of Kubrick's older movies (You know, the fifty or so that he made with the words Death or Kill in the title).
yes that little kick is cute but there is some photo shop thing that could prolong the nude shot for a few seconds more if only more women look like her some 1/3 of what she made for the flim every year for the rest of your lives .
Kubrick was brilliant. But why in God's name did he replace Keitel with Pollock? Pollock started out as an actor, but never should've come out from behind the camera after about 1975. He was weak in Tootsie and Michael Clayton, and just plain bad in this film. IMO, it would've been a richer film with Keitel and Jennifer Jason Leigh, whose scenes were cut long after they were shot.
This film is endlessly fascinating. We learn from this brief opening scene that Dr. Bill is in search of his identity which he can't locate without his wife, but he neither sees her nor hears her and she is bored by him and resents his distance, among other things. The whole movie is subtextual, unspoken, ambiguous, but more interesting and compelling than any fifty typically literal and overt dumbass Hollywood movies that use every trick to tell you what to feel and think. This movie is art.
I also think the use of silences in this movie was excellent. Usually typical Hollywood characters can't stop blathering throughout the movie. In this film, a character speaks, and then there's a considerable silence, which allows the dialogue to really sink in. I think it also adds to the mystique of the film.
I loooove how candid the film is...it's very natural epecially the part when kidman is sitting on the toilet. sounds weird but c'mon, you gotta have real guts to be that candid let alone knowing that its being filmmed forever! great movie!
See...

Then, about your video. Well I can understand what you mean with what you answered me. Easy, why don't you put that info where it should be, in "More Info" spot. People wouldnt argue anymore about it and they would know why you uploaded the video and what does symbolize.
PS: That "nuff" thing always made me laugh, it reminds me somehow of "muffins".

@stereoscopicify This movie has nothing to do with illuminati. It's a parable about the importance of being earnest in a relationship.

The movie opens with Nicole Kidman and ends with Nicole Kidman. It surely was intentional. It's difficult to understand a genius like Kubrick...
Sw33ts91 1 year ago
we do not truly know the ending...which is a shame. Rumor has it that studio executives altered the ending to make it more cinematic, but we will never know, will we?

I was far too busy staring at Nicky's perfect ass to notice what apartment she's in.
arf15beagle 2 years ago 14
If I may contribute something to this discussion: The room first seen, where Alice is taking her dress off, she clearly just tried on, while deciding what to wear, is definitely the Hartford's apartment. You can see the white classicist collumns, the red curtains and the beige carpet. When the scene goes to Bill, you can recognize that all these elements are present in the apartment. Thus, it must be their place, not Ziegler's or anyone else's. Moreover, conspiracy theories sound very far off.
Dabrema23 2 years ago 6
Sure. Can it be Alice before she married? Now that they're married, it's a mess with lots of Bill's stuff.
could even be her own apartment, but that's unlikely.
Oh, and Bill's place just sucks. Toilet doesn't look it it flushed.
Alice is taller than Bill too.
soccom8341576 2 years ago
@Dabrema23 dude, min 0:35 opening credits shot, its Alice´s apt alright. No trace of Bill Hartford, just women´s high heels on the floor, couple tennis rackets...Oh and a giant pyramid shape on the window made by the parted drapes. Question is tho, how could an art dealer afford a sprawling 3 million dollar Central Park West pad? Hmmm. Cut to the Christmas party...Szandor´s back for more.
Kubrick, you are sorely missed.

A must see movie!!!
Magnolia296 2 years ago 4
I have to admit, even though the film's theme is about unconscious desires/fantasies, Nicole Kidman sports a great backside and body for 8-9 seconds in the opening sequence. I wonder how they managed to pull that off without receiving an "NC-17" rating or her feeling uncomfortable...
SSM1911 2 years ago
I watched the extras on my dvd and think she doesn't feel uncomfortable because she's a great actress and she's a professional. Kubrick knew all this, that's why he chose her for the role. I don't think anyone could've made it better than Nicole Kidman. Her acting is flawless. And I think Kubrick chose Cruise just because he was her husband... because Stanley was a great director and surely didn't think Cruise was an amazing actor. Which in fact he isn't.
Sw33ts91 1 year ago
Kubrick didn't need excellent actors to make remarkable films. He just needs to time to get the remarkable number of takes!
soccom8341576 1 year ago 3

Can't we all just get aloof--- uh-h, I mean get-along...?!

cant even compare movies like this to the hangover lol
sgs446 2 years ago 2
@76special i couldnt agree more with someone. Stanley Kubrick was a genius in this fine art that so many people take for granted and choose to just not recognise. This film was truly his greatest contribution to it.

@topham6 This movie is a masterpiece but we never really saw it..You see Warner had cut out 25 minutes drom it !!

RideMyBMW 2 years ago
What? The movie repeatedly likens financial success to prostitution, especially when it comes to Alice and the costume shop's daughter, but you seem to be implying something literal with absolutely no evidence.
Snacko 2 years ago
"but you seem to be implying something literal with absolutely no evidence." - Snacko
What do you mean "no evidence" ? I`m extrapolating from the movie cues.
RideMyBMW 2 years ago
What past life? Her dreams seem to be mostly biblical and symbolic nature.
And what cues?
Snacko 2 years ago
Alice, has had a "dream".These memories come to Alice during a "dream", which in reality appears to be a repressed memory; a "dream" featuring a "Naval Officer" with a penetrating stare. A man who seemingly hypnotized her for a brief instant, as they passed each other in a hotel lobby. I draw a parallel between the "Naval Officer" to Naval Intelligence, a branch of the Armed Forces that has long been an active participant in MK-ULTRA operations.
RideMyBMW 2 years ago

Google search : MK-Ultra.
RideMyBMW 2 years ago
So are you saying that Alice is actually undressing in someone's else's apartment? Perhaps her lover's apartment? I thought the two tennis racquets might signify that it is Ziegler as he mentions how he plays tennis later in the movie.

Churruminonian 2 years ago
Yes I am aware of that, it doesn't mean you need to shit on it. If you dislike the film then so be it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but he is one of the greatest directors of all time, thus he deserves some respect.
IinnerstrengthH 2 years ago 2
He's got respect where it's due, but people's sycophantic bullshit reverence tends to shout down valid pannings of movies made by celebrated directors that are just crap, this being a prime example.

In defense, Kubrick probably would have released a different product had he lived longer. You are right, it wasn't the greatest movie.
JMB08 2 years ago
I don't know. I still think it takes a good couple of watches to actually appreciate this movie's worth. I've always enjoyed it as much as...well, let's say Lolita or some of Kubrick's older movies (You know, the fifty or so that he made with the words Death or Kill in the title).
Gabbrany 2 years ago
yes that little kick is cute but there is some photo shop thing that could prolong the nude shot for a few seconds more if only more women look like her some 1/3 of what she made for the flim every year for the rest of your lives .
RCvolunteer1978 2 years ago
Kubrick was brilliant. But why in God's name did he replace Keitel with Pollock? Pollock started out as an actor, but never should've come out from behind the camera after about 1975. He was weak in Tootsie and Michael Clayton, and just plain bad in this film. IMO, it would've been a richer film with Keitel and Jennifer Jason Leigh, whose scenes were cut long after they were shot.
mythcrusher 2 years ago
This film is endlessly fascinating. We learn from this brief opening scene that Dr. Bill is in search of his identity which he can't locate without his wife, but he neither sees her nor hears her and she is bored by him and resents his distance, among other things. The whole movie is subtextual, unspoken, ambiguous, but more interesting and compelling than any fifty typically literal and overt dumbass Hollywood movies that use every trick to tell you what to feel and think. This movie is art.
Orsley 3 years ago 13
I also think the use of silences in this movie was excellent. Usually typical Hollywood characters can't stop blathering throughout the movie. In this film, a character speaks, and then there's a considerable silence, which allows the dialogue to really sink in. I think it also adds to the mystique of the film.
