I wish he would have been my platoon commander. I had three terrible boot LT's, one of which I couldn't even trust with a box of crayons and safety scissors.
Why doesn't Nate run for president?? Every single Generation Kill person would vote for him. Except Gunnery Sergeant Griego "Casey Kasem" I talked to him
@yesiamawizardjonny You "sound" like you know it for a fact. Gen Kill ended at a point of tension between them, and i've tried now and again to get some information on how that story went through, but never turned up anything.
@kblargh No. I don't think he would vote for them. Nathaniel Fick left the marine corps right after he returned from the invasion and I'm sure he hasn't seen Schwetje since then.
Nates book is very gripping! It was the first Afghan/Iraq battle accounts book I had read and I instantly couldnt put it down. Its awsome, great respect to Nate for his decisions and his men for bravery.
I have just recently finished reading 'Sniper One' by sgt Dan Mills. That book was also incredible. Its about a British sniper platoon defending 'Cimic House' in Al-Amarah. Seriously the book is probably the best read I've owned. Very different writing style to 'one bullet away'. I recommend!

Many people in the series thought Nate Fick was unfit for for being a Commanding Officer. That's is actually not true! You no know who's unfit, Captain America that moron!
Ficks book is amazing! A great Leader! But I don't want to say too much about the book but when he was asked if he would like to try out for First Recon he was told it suited him more because it was more intelligent and less fighting. This isn't a direct quote, but basically it was a chance to be Recon which as most of you know is to observe and report. Dont get me wrong these guys kill with the best of them, but their main objective is Recon, not straight up combat. Recon lurks in the shadows.
How did you get a Recon Contract? Everyone in my Unit had to enlist with an 03 option and Indoc for Recon at SOI. Then it was off to BRC which is no joke. To be honest, In this day and age there is hardly any difference between Recon and line battalions, That's coming from someone who has been in both. You'll see when you become a Marine.
Nate Fick is the embodiment of the ideal Marine Infantry Officer. A real enlisted man's officer, no BS and he cared about his Marines. If you like Cap. Fick, Generation Kill, or One Bullet Away, I recommend "Joker One" by Lt. Donovan Campbell. Another Marine platoon commander with 2/4 who was a good officer in a shitty situation (occupation of Ramadi), and I believe he consulted Fick when writing the book.
I've read Capt. Fick's book "One Bullet Away" twice now, and came away with a very sobering experience of modern warfare. As an aspiring Marine Officer, I'm moved by his sense of leadership and dedication to his men. Semper Fi, sir.
I would take a lot of "Generation Kill" with the proverbial grain of salt. Nate Fick was a very good officer and his fellow officers come off poor by comparison. You're going to get that even in elite units.
A lot of the problems stemmed from the friction of a Force Recon Unit intended to be parceled out into stealthy packets being utilized as a heavy cavalry unit -- only without the armor. It was recon-by-fire.
Wow! I just got finished watching Generation Kill (gonna read the book soon) and Stark Sands was perfect to play Lt. Fick. It's really weird to see the real person whose character I really admired in the show. It's a trip! I'm definitely going to read his book too now.
He is a good officer either in the Generation kill based on real life event or by listening to him through this interview. I would like to serve any day. Semper fi sir.
In the opinion of this future Marine Corps officer. Lt. Fick was fucked over during the invasion of Iraq. His unit was lead by near incompetent morons. He showed what a true leader should be like, caring for his subordinates safety and conducting his missions in a professional manner. If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about watch "Generation Kill" on HBO where Lt. Fick's experiences are shown.
@daufas Yeah. I do like when he talks about SERE and Afghanistan. I feel sorry for Keith Marine, staying behind with the MEU that would have fucking sucked.
too bad more guys like capt fick dont become part of the us dept of homeland security. the fat pencil pushing turds in the nations capital wouldnt waste a moment sending someone elses less formally educated sons or daughters into danger without fully understanding the consequences. too bad.
I served onboard the uss constellation as a rescue swimmer on a HS60 seahawk. i flew with a ton of young pilot officers. capt flick is an extraordinary example of both a great leader and a good man. lemme tell you from my experience that not many silver spoon fed college grads are half the man he is.
espara was forced to leave the battalion because of something written in generation kill. and staff sergeant eric kocher was court marshaled because of his action in helping the one wounded marine who stepped on the land mind in the end of the book
Capt. Nathaniel Flick is not only a true hero but one heck of a writer. One Bullet away is a simply stunningly real account of what it is like to be a Marine. A must read for EVERYONE.
@chairmanmao89 I read in Generation Kill that Cpt America was promoted to major and given a nice desk job somewhere. No discaplinary action taken against him.
@xance1 I believe the unofficial reason for the desk job was to get him away from leading men in the field. A recon marine said that he had been "blacklisted" from field service.
@BenedictWolfe I don't get that. Why do the armed forces kick incompetent officers upstairs when they can simply write fitness reports that force them to quit?
Mr. Fick, I know you are the embodiment of many of our brave soldiers whom are way more couragous, than I am . I just wanted you to know that I have read about you and respect and honor the hell out of you. You are a great American, and basically, I just wanted to say THANK YOU!
P.S. What can I do to help? I already donate to wounded worriars, but seriously what else??
Read One Bullet Away, read Generation Kill and then go watch Generation Kill. Repeat those three steps. These finely woven together accounts are mesmerizing and only shines a well deserved honour on the men (and woman) in Marine Corps.
I read the book, and i thought that it was a great thing to read what happens in an officer's thoughts when a war goes on instead of hearing reports from politicians that have no clue what went on, or some news story about terrible occasions, compared to what a marine did for the people that happened. I find that his choice to blow up the RPG amazing, sensative, and much better than what the media attempts to portray upon America
So true, God bless all our soldiers and veterans! They deserve much more credit than they have been given, thank you for your service. If you want to tell us about what "murderers" they are, go over to Iraq and Afghanistan and tell me how it went! I can almost guarantee you that none of those reporters actually were there and if those troops weren't there, you would be dead! Ignorant idiots!
Everyone should have to read some book such as this before making a stupid comment like reporters!
Ficks book is great because it is him right before 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq. Great for anyone who is thinking about becoming an Officer in the United States Marine Corps.
Right on. Me too. What would our lives be like without them?
And I can't wait to read this book! Loved Generation Kill. And btw, Stark Sands did an amazing job capturing this guy's overall demeanor. Looks like him too.
no its not. the real captain craig schweigjte looks nothing like his character in generation kill. thast is fick. trust me. in fick's book he clearly states that is him calling in an arty strike on a fedayeen convoy
I read Fick's book TWICE. He's such an impressive guy, and I'm glad to see that he's continuing his work as an advocate for the military. I've even been able to track down articles he's written in major papers. My favorite was an analysis of the Obama/McCain campaigns. I won't be surprised to see him holding office in DC within ten years - god knows we need leaders with his experience and perspective. He's got my vote for sure.
This book is highly recommended reading for ALL Generation Kill fans!! It's a "backstory" and a different view on GK. w/ some great photos of Rudy and Espera prior to Iraq.
Ho my how coool!! I had't been watching the Conven, but now I will to see Nate. Obama will be smart to appoint him to something important, shoudl have chosen him as VP. McCain outhgt to get in the game and nominate Nate.Nate is inspiring and provides a personal example of the vision we need for ourselves. Vote Fick!
Casey Kasem is posting video's trying to show Fick as being the one who was screwed up (not him). When I posted a comment asking why Wright would portray Fick as squared away if in fact he wasn't, he deleted my comment.
That just reinforced my belief that Wright portrayed these two men accurately.
is that the vividhdvideo guy? I saw a few of those clips and I was wondering who was posting them... wonder how it feels to be portrayed as an incompetent asshole to millions of TV viewers
I'm sure it stinks, but I do find it funny that his character was obsessed with bad mouthing Lt. Fick to anyone who would listen, and now here he is in real life posting video's in an effort to bad mouth Lt. Fick.
Yet I'm supposed to believe he was portrayed inaccurately...
I also have trouble reconciling why it isn't professional for Lt. Fick to question Encino Man's orders, but he can bad mouth a commissioned officer and that's okay?
I agree with jimmytravis. It took me a while to figure out about vividvid., but yeah they seem obsessed with Lt. Fick and ary trying to discredit Fick, I heard the censoring of others here and without being upfront about the intentions. It all just convinces me that Evan's book is spot on.
He deleted all our comments and blocked me from commenting on his video's. Now he is saying that he told Lt. Fick he did a good job. Okay, and then after Wright's book came out he posted a blog where he called Fick & Wynn cowards and said that they should've been relieved. Unbelievable how perfectly Wright captured this guy.
Let's all email McCain and suggest he consider this great guy to be his VP. Obama should've chosen Fick. Whoever is president should appoint him to a leadership role. He is what we need in these times of corrupt politicions that sell themselves like soda cans. Say one thing and then reverse themselves according to polls. There is no true vision we can trust the candidate really believes in and thus carry him through. I may write Fick in. We need this moral clarity in this horrible times.
I'd love to see Flick go for Congress. I hope but I'm not assuming right out he's a democrat, but I will bet every cent I have that Encino Man is GOP right to his core.
Yes, Fick for President! This is the clarity and leadership we need to get us of this mess we are in with feckless leaders, manufactured marketing products that are pushed like they were selling soda while the country goes downhill!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I read his book, and thought he was great. But talked to a enlisted member of the USMC who served with him, who didn't seem to like him that much. I think the book was a little self-serving.
I think that would depend on the officer. You dont want the guy to be in charge of you and ass. He may get you killed. If he was my officer I would respect him, but thats mine and maybe Capt Fick's RET opnion. It also depend on the type of guys he has under his command.
We need more men and women like Captain Fick. If everyone in DC were more like him, America just might remain a great nation for decades to come. He had better run for president, and soon, too, before our country is permanently damaged.
i want his signature in my ONE BULLET AWAY and GENERATION KILL

I think that would depend on the officer. You dont want the guy to be in charge of you and ass. He may get you killed. If he was my officer I would respect him, but thats mine and maybe Capt Fick's RET opnion. It also depend on the type of guys he has under his command.

I read Fick's book. It was excellent. I can see this guy becoming a politician or a diplomat in the future.

We need more men and women like Captain Fick. If everyone in DC were more like him, America just might remain a great nation for decades to come. He had better run for president, and soon, too, before our country is permanently damaged.
