Nates book is very gripping! It was the first Afghan/Iraq battle accounts book I had read and I instantly couldnt put it down. Its awsome, great respect to Nate for his decisions and his men for bravery.

I have just recently finished reading 'Sniper One' by sgt Dan Mills. That book was also incredible. Its about a British sniper platoon defending 'Cimic House' in Al-Amarah. Seriously the book is probably the best read I've owned. Very different writing style to 'one bullet away'. I recommend!

Ficks book is amazing! A great Leader! But I don't want to say too much about the book but when he was asked if he would like to try out for First Recon he was told it suited him more because it was more intelligent and less fighting. This isn't a direct quote, but basically it was a chance to be Recon which as most of you know is to observe and report. Dont get me wrong these guys kill with the best of them, but their main objective is Recon, not straight up combat. Recon lurks in the shadows.

How did you get a Recon Contract? Everyone in my Unit had to enlist with an 03 option and Indoc for Recon at SOI. Then it was off to BRC which is no joke. To be honest, In this day and age there is hardly any difference between Recon and line battalions, That's coming from someone who has been in both. You'll see when you become a Marine.

Nate Fick is the embodiment of the ideal Marine Infantry Officer. A real enlisted man's officer, no BS and he cared about his Marines. If you like Cap. Fick, Generation Kill, or One Bullet Away, I recommend "Joker One" by Lt. Donovan Campbell. Another Marine platoon commander with 2/4 who was a good officer in a shitty situation (occupation of Ramadi), and I believe he consulted Fick when writing the book.

I would take a lot of "Generation Kill" with the proverbial grain of salt. Nate Fick was a very good officer and his fellow officers come off poor by comparison. You're going to get that even in elite units.

A lot of the problems stemmed from the friction of a Force Recon Unit intended to be parceled out into stealthy packets being utilized as a heavy cavalry unit -- only without the armor. It was recon-by-fire.

Wow! I just got finished watching Generation Kill (gonna read the book soon) and Stark Sands was perfect to play Lt. Fick. It's really weird to see the real person whose character I really admired in the show. It's a trip! I'm definitely going to read his book too now.

He showed what a true leader should be like, caring for his subordinates safety and conducting his missions in a professional manner. Read One Bullet Away, read Generation Kill and then go watch Generation Kill. Repeat those three steps. These finely woven together accounts are mesmerizing and only shines a well deserved honour on the men (and woman) in Marine Corps.

I read Fick's book TWICE. He's such an impressive guy, and I'm glad to see that he's continuing his work as an advocate for the military. I've even been able to track down articles he's written in major papers. My favorite was an analysis of the Obama/McCain campaigns. I won't be surprised to see him holding office in DC within ten years - god knows we need leaders with his experience and perspective. He's got my vote for sure.
