I don't see how they can market this to metal players. Every time he palm-mutes a chord, it screams "I'm an EL84 based amp!"......what should be a percussive "chug" gets compressed in to more like a "shrug". With an EL34 output section you at least have the option of swapping in KT77's, with EL84's you get what you get. I love EL84 amps for about 75% of MY STUFF, but the remaining 25% (high-gain, palm-muted rhythm guitar) I have to have a G12T-75 and something with 6L6's or KT88/77/99-etc.
@sm34g just make sure the ohms match up.. that's it.. the 4x12 will have more low end for sure, especially if you have V30's in it. just remember whoever did the sound made it sound amazing to market it and some of your tone is in your how you play
@ARom16 Hey! You might want to check out the new Jim Root Terror when it comes out (soon). Takes the preamp section of the Rockerverb and marries it to the Terror footrpint. Cheers ~ Doug...
For recording at home, this thing would be perfect. I don't know about performing live, unless A/B'd with another amp?? but man... push this with a tube screamer? ouch. if I saw a used one for less than $600 I would grab it.
@bunnyadrian Hey! So it turns out that one of the SM57s I used is in fact wired out of phase. When compacted to mono, the guitar mix collapses which frustrates me as much as anyone here. If you search "Orange Amps Dark Terror - Audio Remix" you'll find the updated version. My apologies that I didn't catch this. Sincerely ~ Doug...
Hello! So there are a ton of great questions here that I need to circle back and answer after NAMM - looking forward to it:) Thanks for all the great feedback and just being cool! A couple of quick replies - Yes, the cleans are with the volume all the way up, I have not tried the GT-10 into this amp, but I'm sure it would sound great, and yes I am aware of the phase issue which was mic related. Anyone listening in mono is having a bummer experience, which bums me out. Talk after NAMM:)
Did the clean tones at 1:20 + Really come out of the Dark Terror? XD I've never tried one but I've heard that it's nearly impossible to get a clean tone out of it :P
Or has he just got the Guitar volume down real low?
@MrPurpleguitar Well I don't know about crystal clean, but if you need to do a johnny cash cover this certainly isn't the worst thing to use.
Honestly dude, go for a dual terror. Little extra cash but so much more worth it, this dark terror is a bit of a scam, as a dual terror with a good boost can reach any level of distortion this thing can. This amp is more suitable for like sludge metal and shit, still good tho.
Great review. Glad that someone finally showed us how it sounds on clean. Doug I wanna ask you a question. Will it sound good with a Boss GT-10 or a HD500? Or should I just get this one and get a good chorus pedal and a compressor?
The beginning of this video is straight justice for this amp cause, it's just that fucking epic. Plus it's the one of the first demos I've ever heard with a guitarist who can actually play what you want to hear good original riffs!
the mic under his chin looked like a really ugly mole for about 10 seconds. I was thinking dude seriously needed to visit the doctor and have it removed.
@OperationEndGame I think all Orange clinicians are destined for these types of comment ha ha... I'm sure Doug will keep his hair exactly how he likes it.
Tried one out at my local GC and WOW! I did NOT expect such a little amp like that to give me such an amazing tone! I really wanna get one and run it through an Orange 1x12...not to break the bank.
I BOUGHT A TINY TERROR A YEAR AGO AND A DARK TERROR A FEW MONTHS AGO, SO I OWN BOTH.......I RUN THEM IN STEREO OUT OF A LINE 6 M13, WITH A BOSS XL20 LOPPER FOR A NICE FULL STEREO SOUND
.
OR I USE IT THIS WAY: LAY DOWN A RHYTHM TRACK WITH THE TINY TERROR THRU THE RIGHT SIDE AND PLAY LEAD ALONG WITH IT THRU THE LEFT SIDE......FOR THE ONE MAN BAND THING. I CAN ADD A PRETTY GOOD SOUNDING BASS TRACK TO THE RHYTHMN W. THE M13 IF I WANT TO.
@ibbluesman Dude that is so cool. I thought about doing the same simply because I can't decide which I like better. I thought I had decided on an AC30 which is a fine amp, but I played the TT yesterday and I truely feel like I've found the perfect tone for the first time in my life.
I was able to test this out early the other day. I was in a shop and some representatives came in and heard me playing in the amp room and asked me to test out the Dark Terror. It sounded amazing.
Eh, I use an HM-2 with my Tiny Terror. I can get way better 'metal' sounds from it (combined with the pedal), and still get all those nice cleans and slightly vicious gain. And I have to say, the TT looks better than the DT. Orange and white just can't be beat style wise, ha.
@darren0512341 Hey Darren. So in mono there is a phase issue, for which I humbly apologize. The two Shure SM57s I used were actually reverse wired from one another and in collapsing the mix to mono that becomes apparent, something I tested after the video went live, rats. So sorry, I have two computers that deliver mono sound, so my apologies for that, won't be making that mistake again. Sincerely, Doug
This amp is awesome I just played it if it's pushed and maxed out this amp is a metal beast but some don't like the scoop sound I don't really but the head is great. The middle knob to the left is flat eq with a pushed mid and the knob all to the right is bass and treble boosted for a scoop sound
Compared to the Tiny Terror video with clean tone using a Gibson Les Paul, the clean tone of this guitar is just abysmal. I wish they explained the control in the middle more. I suspect it's just like the old Marshall Valvestates contour control. Turn it to the left it's bluesy and full of mids, to the right it's scooped and shit sounding like this guy. I believe this amp has some tones to pull out using a Les Paul. Oh yeah, a DD7 into the front end with break up, cringe!! try it with an MXR CC
@JBL8863 We have our own wholly-owned assembly and production office in China. We pay our employees quite well, and we control all aspects of the process. What you fail to realize is that while we are able to keep labor costs down by setting up shop in China, its not like we're making the solid state Crush and Terror amps for pennies. The price is reflective of how many we make, and the import/export fees, taxes, and shipping costs of those units. Believe me, we'd sell them cheaper if we could.
@JBL8863 Please choose an argument. Are our Chinese products not cheap enough for your taste? Or do we not care about human rights? Because I can promise you that we pay our Chinese employees more than the average wage of their country. In fact, that's one of the many reasons why our products aren't the lowest priced on the market.
Also, there's an argument to be made for bringing business to China so that they can better themselves long-term. Maybe that even means denouncing Communism?
@Ango360 : i own the other "non-dark" version and play it in a 2500 sq ft bar using a self made cab loaded with 2 celestions. it's more than powerful enough for that application. good luck and be sure to go hear this in person as this vid doesn't do it justice . . .
@trashthethrasher With pleasure! Orange really cares about the experience players have with their gear. Part of that experience is trying to get over here enough to answer important questions like yours. If you asked it, others were thinking it:) Have a GREAT day. Cheers ~ Doug:)
orange amps new bass player magazine is using what i put on tshirts for years, only i but a bass cleft in the middle, and the shirts say have bass/will travel,,hell i even gave one to victor wooten, and now orange uses the same words to put that line in thier bass player mag sales adds,,they owe me a bass rig
now dose the lower wattage really make a differnce of how loud you can go? how jamable would you say it is? like pretty decent for gigging and what not? but also great for the studio?
@cbertram11 Ive played a terror in store and they are very jammable! They are louder than you would think, also when you start cranking it up it sounds better, the beauty of tubes! It would be great for studio work.
@broadcast666this thats awesome man! see i have an orange cab here its a 2 times 12 cab do you think thats good enough for like small gigs and jam outs?
@cbertram11 hell yeah, on the 15 watt setting it should be capable of small gigs, otherwise you may need to mic up through the system if its larger venue. A 2x12 should pump plenty air. But i also recommend you try it in person! You can never know if its for you otherwise. 7 watts will give more distortion faster, good for bedroom use.
we need a boost for metal man. it's all about the boost with hi gain amps. not about more gain, about type of gain and compression. i tink a boost through this would be amazing:)
Hello all thanks for your posts - really appreciated. IMHO, the magic of the Tiny Terror is the ability to manipulate the headroom of the pre-amp, power-amp, or both. An effects loop introduces the ability to put any number of effects units with varying levels of gain that can take away from that balance. The DT on the other hand has a very different gain structure and that lends itself to one of the best sounding loops I've heard. Orange values and listens to your comments so keep 'em coming:)
@alexjauxier There's a company called Jule which modifies the Tiny Terror to accommodate an effects loop. I've heard good things about this modification, but I don't know if it significantly affects the Amp's sound.
I still love my Tiny Terror, regardless. I first assumed it would be a one-trick-pony, but it is so much more than I ever projected it could be. It is what I was looking for, the final amplifier I'll ever own.
@BritaniaRuleAgain We've found that some of the mods do change the overall tone. Whether or not that is noticeable enough to you as the player is up for debate.
@alexjauxier I love the tone of the TT, but not really digging the DT. I love the effects loop of the DT, but none found on the TT. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!!?
@trashthethrasher It is very high gain and can get very loud. Through a 112 cab you're probably going to get too much distortion. Go with a 212 or even a 412 and it will serve you well for practice up to pretty large gigs.
Not knowing the difference between a 6-string and a 7-string guitar says a lot about guitar player and his/her lack of passion for the instrument. That is really a wannabes mistake. Alex ignore ignorance and stupidity of some previous comments. The amp sounds great (want to put my hands in one), the guitar sounds great (I have 7-strings and love them), Doug is an excellent guitar player. The only thing I would have done different is the length of the video. I wanted more.
@alexjauxier He should say, "this is a seven string". The first time I watched, I didn't notice. Its the little tricks like this that companies use to get you.
@maneatingtoilets Definitely wasn't a "trick." I can promise you that since I worked with Doug to develop this video. Doug's main ax is a 7 string and a lot of hard rock/metal players are using them these days. We just wanted to appeal to as many people as possible in 4 minutes. But next time, we'll make sure we point out which guitar Doug is playing! Thanks for the input!
@furbycommando94 Hey Furby, check out the TH100 coming out in 2 months. It has the same channel as the Dark Terror, but also has a dedicated clean channel (VERY CLEAN), and goes up to 100 watts.
I love EL84 amps for about 75% of MY STUFF, but the remaining 25% (high-gain, palm-muted rhythm guitar) I have to have a G12T-75 and something with 6L6's or KT88/77/99-etc.

cbertram11 5 months ago
@cbertram11 Ive played a terror in store and they are very jammable! They are louder than you would think, also when you start cranking it up it sounds better, the beauty of tubes! It would be great for studio work.
broadcast666this 5 months ago
@broadcast666this thats awesome man! see i have an orange cab here its a 2 times 12 cab do you think thats good enough for like small gigs and jam outs?
cbertram11 5 months ago
@cbertram11 hell yeah, on the 15 watt setting it should be capable of small gigs, otherwise you may need to mic up through the system if its larger venue. A 2x12 should pump plenty air. But i also recommend you try it in person! You can never know if its for you otherwise. 7 watts will give more distortion faster, good for bedroom use.
broadcast666this 5 months ago
@cbertram11 check out rob chappers video, its a great demo.
100 watts is double the loudness of 10 watts given the same speaker configuration. So you should be set!

Meh, I think I'll have to pass on this one.

Phasey pseudo-stereo recording makes the amp sound wimpy.
Would also have liked to hear the effect of different SHAPE settings with the same GAIN settings.
And since this amp caters to the highgain crowd: why no demo of the gain dimed, and through a closed-back 4x12"?
andychamp62 5 months ago
this amp doesnt have an option to switch between metal and clean does it?
FenderrMann 5 months ago
we need a boost for metal man. it's all about the boost with hi gain amps. not about more gain, about type of gain and compression. i tink a boost through this would be amazing:)

Say that I plug this baby to a 4x12.
Will I be heard over a loud heavy drummer?
Has anyone rehearsed or giged with it?
Cheers!

Why couldn't you put an effects loop in the Tiny Terror?
BritaniaRuleAgain 6 months ago
@BritaniaRuleAgain We've thought long and hard on this, but doing so would change the tone significantly. It worked on the Dark Terror though.
alexjauxier 6 months ago
@alexjauxier There's a company called Jule which modifies the Tiny Terror to accommodate an effects loop. I've heard good things about this modification, but I don't know if it significantly affects the Amp's sound.
I still love my Tiny Terror, regardless. I first assumed it would be a one-trick-pony, but it is so much more than I ever projected it could be. It is what I was looking for, the final amplifier I'll ever own.
Thanks for the feedback, Orange.
BritaniaRuleAgain 6 months ago
@BritaniaRuleAgain We've found that some of the mods do change the overall tone. Whether or not that is noticeable enough to you as the player is up for debate.
Thanks for the great comments!
alexjauxier 6 months ago
@alexjauxier I love the tone of the TT, but not really digging the DT. I love the effects loop of the DT, but none found on the TT. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!!?

where's the beef?
arsehole420 6 months ago
3:40 sounds like Joe Satriani's neck tone (with less gain ofc), bet he is using PAF PRO as the neck pickup.

WHERE CAN I GET ONE OF THESE? And which cabinet do you recommend to go along with it? And nice 7 string Ibanez :D
trashthethrasher 6 months ago
@trashthethrasher It is very high gain and can get very loud. Through a 112 cab you're probably going to get too much distortion. Go with a 212 or even a 412 and it will serve you well for practice up to pretty large gigs.

so what if hes using a seven string? ima buy this amp and tune my SG down to B...so YEAH!
domboughnique 6 months ago
Not knowing the difference between a 6-string and a 7-string guitar says a lot about guitar player and his/her lack of passion for the instrument. That is really a wannabes mistake. Alex ignore ignorance and stupidity of some previous comments. The amp sounds great (want to put my hands in one), the guitar sounds great (I have 7-strings and love them), Doug is an excellent guitar player. The only thing I would have done different is the length of the video. I wanted more.

Using a 7 string to make it sound heavier? Still sounds good. Expensive though.
maneatingtoilets 6 months ago
@maneatingtoilets No, using a 7 string to show you how good it can sound with a 7 string :-)
alexjauxier 6 months ago
@alexjauxier He should say, "this is a seven string". The first time I watched, I didn't notice. Its the little tricks like this that companies use to get you.
maneatingtoilets 6 months ago
@maneatingtoilets Definitely wasn't a "trick." I can promise you that since I worked with Doug to develop this video. Doug's main ax is a 7 string and a lot of hard rock/metal players are using them these days. We just wanted to appeal to as many people as possible in 4 minutes. But next time, we'll make sure we point out which guitar Doug is playing! Thanks for the input!

I like Doug. Though he really should give Marty Friedman his hair back.

if you guys over there at orqange could make a 2 channel version of this amp, it would be THE perfect amp for metal
furbycommando94 6 months ago
@furbycommando94 Hey Furby, check out the TH100 coming out in 2 months. It has the same channel as the Dark Terror, but also has a dedicated clean channel (VERY CLEAN), and goes up to 100 watts.
