@SNUZZLETHAT Different knives do different things, larger thicker knives can be used to split and down trees. While smaller knives are of tool use/simple cutting. And also with any piece of gear two is one and one is none.
Looking to getting into backpacking... That bein said, Nutn has written the bible on backpacking. He's never steered me wrong on knife, gun, or sight purchases.. I doubt he'll steer me wrong here. Nutnfancy Project: Best channel on Youtube. Period.
@hexenvii I started getting into hiking and mountaineering around the time this video came out... This video helped me understand most things and get me out on the right direction, it's great I would suggest taking notes for your own system
what do you think consists of a good, light, and practical first aid kit consists of for backpacking, I am a beginner at backpacking and love it but my med kit seems a bit bulky.
I know this video is old and Nutn or Veri won't see this but I just wanted you two to know that I have been enjoying your videos for a couple years I'm heading out to the Appalachin trail soon for a one week hike through. Also I'll be joining the USMC at 18 (currently 16) Thanks for everything you do. Semper Fi.
3 quick things - 1- love the videos, thank you 2 - you have entirely too much money to spend 3 - i cant even imagine what you pack for a weekend vacation, remind me to never get in your line at airport security.
Hi Nutn. I saw the whole series more than once. It is a powerhouse of useful informations. I backpack for a long time at the begining i had no concept and i wore too much or too few stuff in my pack. The series of videos is a good overview what you can use on a trip. I'm adopted some shown systems also in to my concept. Now i am more self-sufficient but the pack is heavier. This eight videos suck me in to the Nutnfancy Projec.
Nutnfancy, I will be in the Rocky Mtn. area this spring on the way to Utah. I would like to do some backpacking and to spend a few nights there. I'm fairly new at this, but enjoy it very much. Could you recommend a few trails, that would meet my needs, since you know the mtns. Thanks if you can do this or not
ok Nutn, I used external packs in the 70s and early 80s, then switched to internal. I switched back to external because my 6 year old loves to camp and fish and it's the only way I can get the gear out to the sites. What I found was the external pack is very top heavy and took some getting used to. I listened to what you said about packing but is there a secret to top heavy external packs?
Thanks for all your videos, hard work and inspiration. My son loves your backpacking with your son!
I train hitchicked from columbus ohio to virgina for about a couple months. I started off with to much weight, i ended up dropping about 3/5 of my things.
From my experience here are the essecentials: Proper clothing, a water proof jacket, stay warm,a knife and a lighter/firstarters,tarp,fishing hooks and line, rope, canteen, small pot and and a sleeping bag. and a sig p226. To much stuff in this video, to much weight sucks.
I only have 23 pounds of gear as of now roughly, and thats including my ruck, sleeping bag, tarp, cookware, and med kit.. along with other needed items. But i still have more work to do.
One look and i went "holy crap!" I thought i bring a lot of gear but you take the cake for preparedness. But you're right, there are some things that i agree with and things i disagree with. The sheer weight of the "neat" items amazes me, i'd love to be the person that camps with you, not the one carrying it.
The word orient should be replaced with asia or asian. By the way, as a korea american living seoul, i really enjoy ur vids. Ive learned so much from it n watch them often when i get home sick. For that thanks so much.
I can tell that when you first started backpacking, you carried ungodly amounts because even after years of thinning its a huuuge amount of gear. I find this interesting because i started backpacking a couple years ago and unknowingly headed down the path of an ultra lighter, Either way is perfectly fine, but its really neat how different peoples packs seem completely useless to backpackers on the same trail
Hey these are great videos, I just finished this whole "series" and learned alot. I live in Oregon and I go backpacking all the time around our woods. I'm going to make sure all my friends watch at least this set of videos before we go anywhere else!
someone else could have asked i always fell like a ass if someone did ask the same Q but why so many knives i think i counted ten why not like a good multi-tool, good fixed blade and maybe a small machete
@bikin675 Hi, me again to tell you to shut your man hole. If you are really going to waste your time to comment on his vids about him being fat and a "faggg", when neither are true, then I ask you, why didn't your father use the 2 dollar condom compared to the 50 cent condom? Think about that you 40 year old virgin, oh, my bad, 41 year old munic virgin. Please, either jump off a bridge, or ride a circius ride, and leave the world. Please!
Don't want to criticize but I think it would be better foll ALL OF US if you were to script your videos.
I know it's your thing to be spontaneous when recording, but it's getting rly hard to follow and [more importantly] learn what you are teaching, because you get sidetracked so easily and so often.
Actually i like how he gets side tracked and talks about personal stories. Its creative, unique, and wakes you up. E.g.--i'm an individual who hates power point presentations and i would rather hear personal stories or experiences. When explaining personal experiences creates legitimacy and makes you judge if hes a hoax or a real backpacker. So if someone is filled with information and knowledge please speak away. However i believe peoples attention span lasts 20 minutes.
Wow... I thought I packed a lot... I should show my wife this video and tell her "see, we don't have too much gear this is normal...". Lol but seriously good video if your really into bringing tons of gear. You actually pack like one of my backpacking buddies he too brings everything plus the kitchen sink and seems to enjoy it. Granted his pack will usually weigh twice and once even three times what mine does but hey if you don't mind the weight go for it. I just can't bring myself to carry
Great video! My living room looks the exact same way before I leave on trips. I also like you approach with a base camp rather than thru-hiking. I have found that I like that more myself. Looking forward to your other videos.
It is devilishly fun to smart off and critisize you unjustly nuttin. But on a serious note there is alot of kids out there these days with no fathers to teach them this stuff. And for that I say booyah! to you. Thanks.

Great Video, thanks for putting this together. I am just getting into proper backpacking trips and am still trying to get my gear dialed in. Your experience will help.
Hey nutnfancy, I was wondering when you where going to do a video on sleeping bags. I watched almost all of your adventure videos and you don't really talk much about your sleeping bag. You have videos on tents, backpacks, mugs, but not sleeping bags. I am dying to see a sleeping bag video of yours. Thanks!
I am in the market for a sleeping bag also for Backpacking, would be nice to see a video dedicated to that. I think I am going with a Hybrid Mummy/Rectangular bag. Good Luck!
@acrocanthosaurus4 If you haven't noticed yet this is not a place to vent your feeling. We don't criticizes you for cutting people off in your prius and eating your hot dogs from a hot dog vendor
@cpahunter123 i understand, but how would you like it if you were shot at and killed!!!!! btw I love nutn and his vids, and what does " we dont criticizes You" mean
@acrocanthosaurus4 By the nature of your comment I thought you were just being a troll and for that I am sorry. And by we don't criticize you i mean we hunters don't criticize any of you non hunting peoples decisions. Sorry for the misunderstanding and long live the TNP nation +the Republic
@acrocanthosaurus4 To answer the "how would I like it if I were shot and killed" look to the big businesses that raise and kill animals to feed other people those animals are put thru way more torture by means of overcrowding and hormones. We hunters take animals humanely and safely while making it as painless as possible to the animals unlike the other businesses (for lack of better word). Alos none of us would be alive now if it was not for hunting, what do you think pioneers and cavemen ate:D
@cpahunter123 I actually really agree with you, its just killing animals and then stuffing them just for fun really bugs me, like hunting elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions, that pisses me off!! I dont mind hunting if your doing for food. good response :)
@acrocanthosaurus4 nah man its ok to hunt for sport but ju that if u know wat to do with the animal after u harvested it is wats important. no waste thats wat lots of ppl have forgotten. and even if u only hunt for sport u must make sure to give your harvest to someone who will put it to use.
I really like your gun videos. I just found out about your backpacking vids because another gun fan mentioned your hiking videos. Like you, I have years of backpacking experience and while I would never carry an inflatable raft on a trip, I figure; "whatever floats your boat."
I have used E-tools in the army and it was my least favorite tool to carry, however it gives you more "firepower" of capabilities as you call it when you get it out there, covering your no.2 and toilet paper being the least of it. the best use in my opinion is to clear the area under my mattress from big rocks etc. (keep in mind i was camping way out of trails and camp sites). anw if you have any kind of feed back on your experiences/opinion on the e-tool i would appreciate it. :)
i agree with most of those things you said. but i was taught how to backpack by my grandpa who was a WWII veteran so whenever i went with him it was always minimalistic. Instead of six pairs of socks we would take two. Wear one pair during the day and wash them at night and the next day wear the other pair and dry the other ones around your neck.
I don't think I have ever seen someone carry so much gear into the woods. What you are describing is a hike-in camping trip...not backpacking. Video is mislabled.
I have to say, I do enjoy your videos but partner, I'm wondering if you have tried or go ultralightweight backpacking once in a while? I've been slowly converted through the years and it is so much more fun and easyer than hauling a lot of gear in. I don't suffer, I'm safe, and the fun-factor is so much greater. I'd sure like to see a few videos on it, if you can swing it. Thanks.
Hey you know what, for liner socks, even though it is kind of embarrassing, I have found through years of hunting, (and not with a tree stand, I am talking hiking hard to a vantage point, then stalking after any sign of the wild life I am Hunting, and then taking a 75 yard -700 yard shot, kind of Hunting) that thicker and cut down womens nylons under wool boot cut socks, works extremely well, way better than regular socks. + it is always a good Idea to take "mole skin" with you too.
Do you always carry a firearm with you when you head out on either a hike or backpacking trip? I have a CCW and always carry when leaving the house, just interested in your philosophy on firearm protection versus weight on a back country trek.
Nice kit! I like how you don't have TOO much junk like some. Personally I prefer the bushcraft-ish way and I just bring a small pack with necessary things and a sleeping pad.
If we ask really really nicely would Nutn do a comprehensive Bug Out Bag series akin to this excellent backpacking series? If he would cover woodland SHTF WOROL extended escape style, and extended SHTF urban WOROL survival scenarios that would be truly appreciated.
Very good , very imformative. I'm a former US Army soldier, but this was helpful I learned many things.. I plan on a camping trip and this has indeed helped! Thanks
Good Golly that is a lot of blades. I counted maybe 10-11 blades??! I carry my field blade, I have a Columbia River at my daily carry, a small blade on my key chain and of course one on my multi-tool. WHY ON EARTH DO YOU NEED 10? If I don't watch all 8 parts in the hopes that you explain this, I may very well go insane.
Hey Veri-Hope all is well at the TNP-I'm taking another adventure solo trip to Fiji for 30 days-I'm outfitted for a mountain type environment....Any suggestion on tips and tricks in a tropical environment? I'm really interested in a hammock tent-Any suggestions?
@nutnfancy You must stay busy Veri-Thanks for all your efforts...Fiji is composed of 300 islands-only 100 of which are inhabited...Basicly-the garden of Eden broke off into what we call Fiji(seems that way) year round growing seasons=food just a pluck away!! Tropical fish of abundance-the nicest people I've ever met!! The best surfing in the world is always a good thing too!!
@nutnfancy Best thing about it-Once you buy land-you never pay any additional taxes or fees EVER! 9 degree's difference between the coldest winter night and the hottest summer day! 83 is the high..90% of the people are solid Christians and UBER friendly-I'll be gone for 30 days and plan to film the majority of the trip-Maybe I'll post a vid response or something for ya Veri- Thanks for the replys=CYA-
@Jeenyus1983 you could try a hammock like the black bird and a tarp like the maccat. if you are interested look at shugs vids @Jeenyus1983 you could try a hammock like the black bird and a tarp like the maccat. if you are interested look at shugs vids
I watched your whole vid series about a year ago, and it made my first extended stay trip awesome. you know your stuff, and I want to thank you for making these vids...I am just watching it again to refresh my memory, as I am going on a 36m trek through theApp. mts this upcoming spring.
love how he always says out of doors, not outdoors, always catches my ear. interesting vocal tendency. as always love the videos keep up the amazing work ! :D
excellent that you go over clothing, many inexperienced hikers always make the mistake of wearing and bringing incorrect clothing items. I wouldn't recommend going out to deeper waters for new beginners as it can be extremely dangerous, if u r going to go make sure there is someone who knows what to do etc. Panic in frigid cold water = disaster
Man this info is great but its extremely difficult to find specific advice on hot climate camping. Which is where I live South Texas. Does anyone have advice for a begginer on clothing?
@CrispyGarcia as nutinfancy said, stay away from cotton. If you're hiking in Texas (like me) you'll build up swet quick and cotton will hang on to it which will lead to serious chafe. wear loose cloths that have good ventilation, Academy has shirts that have vents in the back (fishermen wear them alot). synthetic shorts are good, but there's alot of thorns and stuff in texas so if you're in dense brush wear pants (again, synthetic). a wrap around brim hat is good, it keeps the sun off your nec
@CrispyGarcia be sure to change out your socks every couple miles too, sweaty socks lead to horrible blisters, put foot powder IN the socks I recommend blue gold bond. try to find boots that have side and toe vents. for under garments find some good spandex (academy carries it). if you feel something starting to chafe, change it out with fresh cloths, drape the sweaty clothes accross the top of your pack and let the sun dry it if you want to keep moving. and DRINK WATER!!!
i have zip for exp in this if you could ever get the time to make a how to start collecting gear for this type of outdoor excursion and what you need like basics that would be great! i would love to get into it
Love the vids. Have been a fan and follower for over a year now. Love the work you and your fellow crew do. Just recently hiked all over the Northern Cascades. Loved it and definitely recommend it.
Awesome Series! Watched it all a couple times and I always come away with something new to think about. If you ever get a chance, I think we would all like to see you pack for a trip. Take care Nate
hey there nutn.... I really liked the vidoe Iwas in the scouts and hiked all over the place. I also carry alot of the same things in my pack i believe in being prepared for what might come.

I HATE HUNTING!!!! KILLING ANIMALS IS WRONG!!!!
acrocanthosaurus4 1 year ago
@acrocanthosaurus4 If you haven't noticed yet this is not a place to vent your feeling. We don't criticizes you for cutting people off in your prius and eating your hot dogs from a hot dog vendor
cpahunter123 1 year ago
@cpahunter123 i understand, but how would you like it if you were shot at and killed!!!!! btw I love nutn and his vids, and what does " we dont criticizes You" mean
acrocanthosaurus4 1 year ago
@acrocanthosaurus4 By the nature of your comment I thought you were just being a troll and for that I am sorry. And by we don't criticize you i mean we hunters don't criticize any of you non hunting peoples decisions. Sorry for the misunderstanding and long live the TNP nation +the Republic
cpahunter123 1 year ago
@acrocanthosaurus4 To answer the "how would I like it if I were shot and killed" look to the big businesses that raise and kill animals to feed other people those animals are put thru way more torture by means of overcrowding and hormones. We hunters take animals humanely and safely while making it as painless as possible to the animals unlike the other businesses (for lack of better word). Alos none of us would be alive now if it was not for hunting, what do you think pioneers and cavemen ate:D
cpahunter123 1 year ago
@cpahunter123 I actually really agree with you, its just killing animals and then stuffing them just for fun really bugs me, like hunting elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions, that pisses me off!! I dont mind hunting if your doing for food. good response :)
acrocanthosaurus4 1 year ago

Video is mislabled.
benajah1976 1 year ago
Do you -HAVE- to say evrything 10 times?
... Yeah. Being on a raft without a PFD sucks. It doesnt need to take ten minutes to talk about it.
Serostern 1 year ago

Mopar68Sharpshooter 1 year ago
@Mopar68Sharpshooter don't laugh at the nylons thing. seriously, it really works.

Do you always carry a firearm with you when you head out on either a hike or backpacking trip? I have a CCW and always carry when leaving the house, just interested in your philosophy on firearm protection versus weight on a back country trek.
Hyp3rB76 1 year ago
Nice kit! I like how you don't have TOO much junk like some. Personally I prefer the bushcraft-ish way and I just bring a small pack with necessary things and a sleeping pad.
omgsayavailable 1 year ago
so im guessing you prefer a heavyer pack instead of the superlight systems some people say are better?

If we ask really really nicely would Nutn do a comprehensive Bug Out Bag series akin to this excellent backpacking series? If he would cover woodland SHTF WOROL extended escape style, and extended SHTF urban WOROL survival scenarios that would be truly appreciated.

The best surfing in the world is always a good thing too!!

excellent that you go over clothing, many inexperienced hikers always make the mistake of wearing and bringing incorrect clothing items.

CrispyGarcia 1 year ago
@CrispyGarcia as nutinfancy said, stay away from cotton. If you're hiking in Texas (like me) you'll build up swet quick and cotton will hang on to it which will lead to serious chafe. wear loose cloths that have good ventilation, Academy has shirts that have vents in the back (fishermen wear them alot). synthetic shorts are good, but there's alot of thorns and stuff in texas so if you're in dense brush wear pants (again, synthetic). a wrap around brim hat is good, it keeps the sun off your nec
zeyzics 1 year ago
@CrispyGarcia be sure to change out your socks every couple miles too, sweaty socks lead to horrible blisters, put foot powder IN the socks I recommend blue gold bond. try to find boots that have side and toe vents. for under garments find some good spandex (academy carries it). if you feel something starting to chafe, change it out with fresh cloths, drape the sweaty clothes accross the top of your pack and let the sun dry it if you want to keep moving. and DRINK WATER!!!
