@1337Miner Sand and gravel have an interesting behavior in Minecraft: when they fall onto a torch, they automatically "break" (meaning, they appear as if they have been mined, ready to be picked up to the inventory). However, for that to work, you need to have one torch under each sand/gravel pillar.

In this case, there were LOTS of pillars ready to fall, so the player had to place one torch under every pillar at the same time, since when the first block is mined, the other will all drop.
