Tommy Bolin wrote and played my most fav music ever.LOVE him!and more than Blackmore, but i love him too ,just less.Tommy was a better writer and singer than Blackmore .There both great guitar players.A lot work for TB to learn RB solo's,and on drugs,he didn't care to put much effort.he could of done it if he cared to.
Great song; reminds me a bit of Robbie Robertson of the "BAND". I liked his work with Deep Purple -- especially the tour of Australia. His solo work speaks for itself and his work on Cobham's Spectrum CD and Alphonse Mouzon's Mind Transplant have received praise from the rest of the music world. A Great player that belongs in the master class of guitarist.
Tommy was fantastic and I loved his work, except live with Purple. I wasted money seeing him with them. He was so screwed up on drugs, he didn't even know half the songs. It was probably the worst performance I ever saw on stage. Thank God I have all the incredible albums to remember him by. It is a shame what drugs did to his playing on stage as well as what it did to him personnally.
@tcstratman i actually saw TB 3 months before he died. he was too drugged out to play well. sad. he was incredibly talented and was loved by so many. he did some good stuff with DP but most of it wasnt that great. gettin tighter is good, and he did wild dogs live with them too.
@tiborzkarate OMG ... name a few .... U must b young . Tommy Bolin OD'ed ...because he was never HEARD .... U r the reason he didn't get there ... so to speak . DEEP PURPLE , URIAH HEEP , BLACK SABBATH , JAMES GANG . No worries though ... those of us that were there and KNOW .credit him ! I am SURE Jeff Beck would tell u so. Gifted doesn't mean you're famous ... or appreciated ,anyway ! I honor him WAY,more then Clapton ... the sell out for $. LAY DOWN CLAPTON - GIVE T.BOLIN HIS PLACE !
Every artist has their brush of which they paint there 'portrait' !
Tommy B. was a artist who painted beautifully; he deserves his musical due because he follow his dream and live his 'reality' ! It is those who donot fallow their dreams, wish they had a 'portrait ' to hang ! !
@ukraininoak ... How Ironic ... Lady Acorn a ukrainian .... says to the oak <3 Love my T.Bolin in vinyl and on disc ... but listen to him play ...know your heart can hear ... he really just wanted to play and give to us ..all he had to give . Deep Purple , Uriah Heep , James Gang ,,,, Black Sabbath . Pffffftttt some of the very bestest ...are bestest left ...undiscovered <3 Tommy Bolin ...is PURE <3
listen to bolin's own albuns, songs like teaser, the grind, marching powder, wild dogs, lotus, savannah woman, in fact all the teaser and private eyes albuns.
and his work with purple too, like the drifter, this time around, gettin tighter, comin home.
sure, if you like blackmore beacuse you like malmsteen, you can forget all i've said
Tommy wrote much better songs than Blackmore ever could and the huge difference is that Bolin played his guitar with soul, while Blackmore was mainly an ego tripper...
i saw him in portland,or about a week before he died,he didn't look or play well, but there were a couple of moments,,i learned to play on teaser, wild dogs, damn, wish i would have written that
wow.....Tommys guitar work (slide) is absolutely amazing....what a great tune.....he was such a amazing guitar player....well, like i always say...when you say Hendrix in a sentence, you M U S T follow it with T O M M Y B O L I N.....and one more thing....Blackmore could only play one type of music....Tommy could play about 13 or 14 different styles THEREFORE TOMMYS was a MUCH BETTER guitar player than Blackhead/more.
Youre so right man. Im a big Hendrix fan, but maaaannn. Bolin was a great guitar player, not only that, he was a great music maker. Lets leave Blackmore out of this because he was an academic musician that only played excercises on his guitar. He was no creator. But Bolin. Im his number 1 fan.
I got curious to see what ratbatblue posted.Too bad some Blackmore fans use to say a lot of bullshit about Bolin.Remember 1 thing,Bolin never worried to play Blackmore songs doing same guitar solos of Blackmore,he always had his own personality and played on his way,and sometimes he couldn't get his best playing live because he was on drugs, but when he was clean he used to be superb, just listen "Come taste the band" to realize this.Compare Blackmore to Bolin is a big stupidity, both are excelent
I never understood the Blackmore vs Bolin fan rivalry, I always loved both players, just as they both admired each other's work. Bolin was not as recognized for his talents, which were extremely diverse.
just some folks mentality i suppose. On TB's diversity those folks should go to wikipedia and read up then listen to what TB was doing before DP . I was and although i was not too hip on the jazz and Cobb stuff ,he was great at it. Many guitarists are underrated. Glen Buxton was but perhaps TB was more influential among his peers than misc fans with pom poms will ever know.
Who's the best guitarist ever ? The one who played the music you like to listen to.
@Eliascalifa . I think , Tommy, more the musician ... just wanted to PLAY ... and got lost and hurt ... when other's were marked and he was not .... Drugs just magnified this for him ... and gave him an alternate route ,but those of us,left behind. TIP OUR HATS and KNOW there's real fame and talent , there is NO comparing ,each of them have their place . Bolin did a lot , his name was not put on . But a real musician ..... still JUST LOVES TO PLAY .RIP T. BOLIN .
Thank you so much for posting.Amazing beautiful song,I love Zephyr's version more, with great Candy Givens on vocals.Amazing pictures of Bolin with Zephyr and Purple MK IV.I love you forever Bolin,God bless you. RIP.
You show your ignorance. Tommy and John Tesar wrote this when Tommy was about 16 1/2 years old. It is a very early demo likely recorded on a cheapo home tape deck with crap mics.
It was about late 1968 or early 1969. check out the kick ass full band version on the first Zephyr album a year later.
So asshole, lets see the stuff you wrote at 17 years old.
Tommy had more talent and magic in his stool than you are likely ever to experience in your life.
