the building trade unions are the ones who have made construction work places safer through the years. and the project labor agreements help tax payers from preventing any work stoppages or any wild cat strikes that some unions have used in the past. and the construction unions make their members go through training and upgrading their skills all the time. the figure of 84% do not belong to unions is misleading.
making sure employees get fair wages? thats retarded! the gov. already protects against this. not sure of the doc. name but any biz has to have certain saftey, minimum wage, etc. docs posted for all employees to see hence why we have hr departments for sexual harassment and suff. companies can be successful without union just look a WAL-MART
Unions pay people a living wage. Private industry for the most part does not give employees benefits, and that is a shame. People deserve to be compensated for their time energy and effort in there work. I am Pro Union and proud to employee only union workers.
Wouldn't it be more efficient to give these gov't construction projects over to NON-UNION workers? After all, the union workers are already getting higher wages and massive benefits. They already have an advantage. I assume the gov't projects will probably give these workers more income than usual private construction contracts, so why not give the non-union workers a boost?
Or just don't have preference at all and actually judge companies on their competence, not unions.
Project Labor Agreements? O, god. I had no idea these even existed! Christ! Government construction projects oftentimes give preference to unionized contractors??? That's just downright insulting to the 84% of construction workers in non-union co's who aren't selected! Why should they be passed up? And construction workers actually have to pay union dues regardless of whether they join? If that isn't unAmerican, I don't know what is.
I am so sick of these big gov't and union types trying to tell workers "We know best, so just shut up and don't get out of line." "You have to join a union because you'll get higher wages." Is that really YOUR decision to make, mr. union boss? What if I don't want the extra wages? I mean, it'd be nice, but leave that choice up to me.
