@littlebutterflii Because while he may be "evil" plan, he is also smart. If he were to marry Elizabeth he would be bored to tears. He actually does like Anne, aka. Anne is more interesting and smart while Elizabeth is superficial (like her dad) and dumb.
@sierracademianut isn't he quite the same in Merlin though? he kinda likes playing those roles doesn't he? naughty boy! (though didn't you see a resemblance between wentworth and arthur? he looks like his cousin!)
@bbcseriesfan I know! Anthony Head is quite good at being annoying and arrogant. Stubborn guy. I wonder if he's like that in real life. :P Haha. Probably not.
I don't really see Wentworth and Arthur being related. Sorry! But they are both good-looking. Their hair is similar, I suppose.
@bbcseriesfan Haha, Gwaine - what a charmer! What do you mean Merlin ex-aequo? Merlin is my favorite character, too, although Arthur and Gwen are tied at second.
@sierracademianut it's latin, for "tied" but as a french speaker, sometimes i forget you don't use those words... :s sorry and yeah, merlin's everyone favourite, though i think arthur might be second tied with sir leon, i completely adore him! :)
@bbcseriesfan Haha, Sir Leon! He's all right, I'm glad he came back after Once and Future Queen - although isn't he just a minor character?
Yes, I admit it, Merlin is everyone's favorite - but for good reason! :)
I'm still not sure what you mean. "My favorites are Gwaine and Merlin ex-aequo?" Merlin tied? I'm sorry about my uselessness with Latin. We Americans don't receive the best education!
@sierracademianut I am definitely looking forward to it and for once in my life I hate Stephen Moffatt for cutting Dr Who in two parts...
I didn't mean it badly, it's just a fact that we Belgians use a lot of Latin as expressions... "Ex-aequo" means "tied" so Merlin and Gwaine are tied first...
And I know that Sir Leon is a minor character, but I can't help liking him... Hope in season 4 we see more of him...
And finally, of course Merlin's everyone favourite, he's the cuttest of them all!!
@sierracademianut merthur of course!!! and i know what it means... we do that kind of shipping too here you know... :) not sure what brolin means though, explain it please... ^^

@sierracademianut oh my xD i guess i´m just a merthur shipper then. the possibilites of that happening are higher cause us fan girls can annoy the scriptwriter muhahaaaaa ^^
@Shufflertx2step Oh yes, the Aristocratic family's loved to walk around hall's in Bath and London, especially during the season to see who was out and catch up on any disgraces or news of anything and everything of the day.
Sally Hawkins went to my current school. I have her old history teacher this year, and she told us a story about Sally that in her mock GCSE, she got the worst history result in the whole of the school.... EVER! luckily she's a brilliant actress :D
"Perhaps she's not the only poor widow in Bath with little to live on and no surname of dignity." Damn. I had to give her two snaps for that witty response to her father. She left him speechless and looking foolish. I love how sweet and loving she is but it was really nice to see that she can be fiery.
Lol I love it at 6:16. Its easy for me,as a girl, to imagine talking about guys to another girl. But this scene really shows brotherly love and friendship, I like hearing their laughter. I also like that he can describe her so warmly and lovingly and yet it dosent make him seem less manly. Kinda get a glimpse of a "Guy conversation".
@jscbrea07 Sure there are few men as great as those in Austen's canon, but you forget there are fewer women who deserve them! Its evolution, you know, anything that no longer helps a specie in procreation must gradually vanish.
@jscbrea07 I dont know too bad they only exist in novels, what would a woman do if they did exist in real life! They certainly wouldnt be as obtainable as your usual run of the mill male today, they would still be very choosy.
The truth is that there are plenty of guys out there who are willing to factor character over looks in a relationship. But women must be reasonable and acknowledge that this guy might not be tall, dark, and handsome.
Anne overall has a melancholy aura about her, y? For 1 she's the middle child and you know how it usually is with such children, 2nd she's 27 and unmarried which translates to modern day as a wrinkly old woman( with plenty cats) living next door who you always see in nightclothes, 3rd the man who she loves is so close yet so far and finally Anne seems to move around a lot and gets her hands dirty-can you blame the girl for not 'prettying up' (there's nothing to celebrate)
Hey you people putting up rude comments about the way Anne looks... She's not that bad. And if you don't like how this Anne looks, what did you think of the girl in the 1995 version? ;)
i understand Anne's not suppose to wear fancy attire on account of her character being what it is but SERIOUSLY they didn't have to put her is SUCH ugly clothes.
God knows I love a Jane Austen novel but in nearly all of them the central female character will have waited years for one man, he will return, show his instrest then five more men will appear all doing the same at the same time!
Whenever I read/watch Jane Austen's works I always have to think of the great tragedies she must have endured in order to write such heart-wrenching and real novels
@macdahet, keep in mind that Louisa suffered a brain injury when she hit her head from that fall. Brain injuries can change a person's personality. It's possible that after her injury, Louisa was no longer the happy-go-lucky girl that we see at the beginning of the movie/novel but was more serious & reserved.
It's interesting comparing this version with the 1995 version. On the whole I think the 1995 casting better reflected the book; but in this version I really like the music, and Anne's looking into the camera is effective (if a bit overdone). Rupert Penry-Jones is v. hot, the thundering Lyme sea fits so well, and all Anne's relatives are v. v. annoying... though every time I look at Lady Russell I think of the Borg queen! Despite this, I'd still recommend it to get people to read the book!
@ohmyclumsyheart Because she thinks that Louisa married Captain Wentworth - so her one and only great love cannot marry Anne anymore which means that all her hope is gone.
I felt like crying when she read that letter. I don't get why people are freaked out over her looking at the camera. She is connecting with her audience
@sanitythroughmadness well, they're "freaked out" because that is not a technique typically used in stage or screen acting (it's called breaking the fourth wall, tearing down the boundary between actor and audience). It can become uncomfortable for audience members, although in this case it is being used as a tool to emphasize the idea that the audience is part of anne's diary, and is thus privy to her thoughts, emotions and yes, even her determined staring at the camera.
@Maria6237 Yes, you're right! The movie tries to portray the way Anne was unkindly treated by her family and maybe somehow overlooked by everyone. It was Jane Austen's intention in the novel to show how a confirmed spinster was treated by the society. Jane Austin was a spinster herself.
I think she genuinely likes Anne a lot even love her and has her best interests at heart, but she is prone in the past of the story to making wrong decisions and also be persuded easily by others who are not interested in Annes happiness.
But in answer to your question, yes, her heart is in the right place.
@shega in fact lady russel might be thought a representative of jane austen herself, who derived inspiration for the novel from her own experiences of "persuading" her niece not to enter too hastily into an engagement.
@jzen1398 I've heard, actually, that Jane Austen herself was persuaded not to marry some dude or other (forget his name) by one of his relatives, who was a close friend of hers. In that case, Anne is more likely representative of Austen than Lady Russell is.
Anne's reaction to the "news" of Capt. Wentworth's engagement, is so well done, you feel like crying for her! Here she has been trying to detach her heart and act like she's okay with what she thinks is inevitable, but when it finally happens, her heart breaks. Awesome scene and I'm glad they included it in the movie!
@serenitybee20 Exactly. Sally Hawkin's (Anne) emotions are so transparent and true. Every action is perfect with her heartbreak. And when her emotions are overcoming that she flusters as she blows out the candle. I just love this version of Persuasion. Its spot on. I must read the book.
@jobabeeful It' jealousy towards Anne, the competition, I mean in her mind of course. Elizabeth saw that Mr. Elliot was interesting in Anne, but not her. She thought that she has a chance with since he lost his wife (she died). Seeing that Anne was alone, she thought Anne was with him. That's why she 's acting that way towards her sister. Anne is not interested in Mr. Elliot. I understand why she's not married yet, she is just like a father. hey are made for each other. LOL!!!!!!!!
The more I look at Sally Hawkins in this, the prettier I think she is... although, as everyone has said: HER HAIR! IT'S AWFUL!

Rupert Penry-Jones is v. hot, the thundering Lyme sea fits so well, and all Anne's relatives are v. v. annoying... though every time I look at Lady Russell I think of the Borg queen! Despite this, I'd still recommend it to get people to read the book!

Ugh. Mr. Elliot's voice gets on my nerves! He should just take a long walk off a short pier! Anyone else agree??

wait whys she crying?
ohmyclumsyheart 1 year ago
@ohmyclumsyheart Because she thinks that Louisa married Captain Wentworth - so her one and only great love cannot marry Anne anymore which means that all her hope is gone.
LilMaus178 1 year ago
@ohmyclumsyheart because she thinks it for certain that Wentworth will marry, not just speculation, and she cries because she still loves him.

I felt like crying when she read that letter. I don't get why people are freaked out over her looking at the camera. She is connecting with her audience
sanitythroughmadness 1 year ago 84
@sanitythroughmadness well, they're "freaked out" because that is not a technique typically used in stage or screen acting (it's called breaking the fourth wall, tearing down the boundary between actor and audience). It can become uncomfortable for audience members, although in this case it is being used as a tool to emphasize the idea that the audience is part of anne's diary, and is thus privy to her thoughts, emotions and yes, even her determined staring at the camera.

Do they seem impatient always with Ann or is it me?
Maria6237 1 year ago
@Maria6237 Yes, you're right! The movie tries to portray the way Anne was unkindly treated by her family and maybe somehow overlooked by everyone. It was Jane Austen's intention in the novel to show how a confirmed spinster was treated by the society. Jane Austin was a spinster herself.

why does the title keep popping up?
watusernameshudiuse 1 year ago 2
@watusernameshudiuse because this was a tv drama and the title comes up when the adverts were on they've just been edited out

are we supposed to like lady russel? or not?
shega 1 year ago 4
@shega
I think she genuinely likes Anne a lot even love her and has her best interests at heart, but she is prone in the past of the story to making wrong decisions and also be persuded easily by others who are not interested in Annes happiness.
But in answer to your question, yes, her heart is in the right place.
Woodlander65 1 year ago
@shega in fact lady russel might be thought a representative of jane austen herself, who derived inspiration for the novel from her own experiences of "persuading" her niece not to enter too hastily into an engagement.
jzen1398 1 year ago
@jzen1398 I've heard, actually, that Jane Austen herself was persuaded not to marry some dude or other (forget his name) by one of his relatives, who was a close friend of hers. In that case, Anne is more likely representative of Austen than Lady Russell is.

Anne's reaction to the "news" of Capt. Wentworth's engagement, is so well done, you feel like crying for her! Here she has been trying to detach her heart and act like she's okay with what she thinks is inevitable, but when it finally happens, her heart breaks. Awesome scene and I'm glad they included it in the movie!
serenitybee20 1 year ago 111
@serenitybee20 Exactly. Sally Hawkin's (Anne) emotions are so transparent and true. Every action is perfect with her heartbreak. And when her emotions are overcoming that she flusters as she blows out the candle. I just love this version of Persuasion. Its spot on. I must read the book.

Sally Hawkins is a fantastic actress. I can't think of anyone who could have played the role of Anne any better.

what is her problem 0:30???
jobabeeful 1 year ago
@jobabeeful It' jealousy towards Anne, the competition, I mean in her mind of course. Elizabeth saw that Mr. Elliot was interesting in Anne, but not her. She thought that she has a chance with since he lost his wife (she died). Seeing that Anne was alone, she thought Anne was with him. That's why she 's acting that way towards her sister. Anne is not interested in Mr. Elliot. I understand why she's not married yet, she is just like a father. hey are made for each other. LOL!!!!!!!!

Some people do annoying so well that I'm convinced if I met the actor/actress in real life, I would want nothing more than to poke his/her eyes out.
