  • killer awesome video! quick question.....uh...i used qt to convert the moshed video as a .mov, but placing any of these moshed movs into a final cut timeline completely grinds everything to a halt. have you had any luck with different export/conversion methods?

  • mine turn out well.....look at it /watch?v=GrN7IkLbi0U

  • compressed, or shrinky dinkd. im using this all the time now.

  • i have tried but keep getting videos with only i frames, my files wont be forced into creating p frames except one or two. anyone got any ideas?

  • super nice of you to make this tutorial! are you actually bob or are you ray tintori or someone else?

  • Great tut. I succesfully followed the instructions and managed to mosh two clips. However I can't seem to get rid of the DivX watermark that shows up in the bottom right corner of the clip. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, any clue as to how to get rid of it?

  • Thank oh great and wise Mosh Master! I shall go forth and datamosh!

  • the ending was pretty good

  • Mooieschijt actually means prettyshit!:D

  • thanks for this tutorial.. and funny too... school should always be fun.

  • Great tutorial, but I'm having several problems with the software.

    1) does anyone know of an alternative to avidemux? No undo button and erratic behavior from copy/paste functions are making the program really frustrating (if not worthless).

    2) Also, I'm getting big sections of video with I frames every frame or two (for two seconds) preserving the length of the video is really important and this is killing me.

Why won't ffmpeg just remove/switch all of my i frames? The interval is set to 25x9!

  • You are awesome!

  • can you use pc? or is it just mac?

  • You NEED to make a version of this for windows, i try to datamoshing clips, and it wont because there are to many iframes :(

  • These videos are great. I just have one question. What's the best way to sync audio to video, say, in the context of a music video?

Also, thank you for introducing me to the work of Paper Rad.

  • 5:00 Nah I'd rather just gently stroke your mustache for a while... Ah yeah thats nice...

  • thx

  • my avidemux crashes when i copy/ paste alot :(

  • mine does too....i thought it was my laptop....but idk wtf it is

  • Wish you would have left in more of the Joy Division song.

  • dude, you are hilarious. let's be friends.

can't believe Paper Rad coined datamoshing! supercool.

  • make your videos in normal

  • Hahaha, that part 'mosh comes from the dutch, mooieschijt.' I'm Dutch, and that's not even a word. XD

  • @nikkimouse85 It is dutch, it means nice shit.. seems about right..

  • @elvin100 well those are two words. but it makes no sense either way, haha. okay okay, I'll admit. you're right, haha.

  • @nikkimouse85 you're dutch? poor you

  • @nikkimouse85 Well, you could translate it to "niceshit" or something :P

  • @nikkimouse85 Well.. it actually means

    Mooie = Beautiful

    Schijt = Shit

    So.. BeautifulShit...

  • @nikkimouse85 nou ja, het heeft wel wat weg van 1 woord XD

  • @nikkimouse85 Yeah not a word, just means "pretty shit".

  • @nikkimouse85 thank you for stating the obvious

  • @nikkimouse85 Ofcourse it is, it's a conjunction of two words, Mooi, which is pretty/good or handsome and Schijt, which is shit.

  • @nikkimouse85 It is a word right, or actually 2 and translated it would be something like beautifulshit :')

  • no.

  • isnt the easiest way to datamosh is to just get a really crappy codec pack?

  • So true! I have watched many datamoshed videos in my life without doing any effort to get that at all :(

  • you are great im ecstatic!

  • Love the Bueller reference at the end.

  • lol shrinki dink

  • I made a video showing how to datamosh on the PC check it out on my channel

  • datamoshing... the new fisheye

  • Dude. Not only are you hilarious, but you're also a great tutor. Thanks so much for posting these vids. Your generosity is not only perfectly timed, but also very much appreciated! I've been trying to get some solid information about these techniques for quite some time, and to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak, is, to put it mildly, SUPER PHAT RADICAL. I would kiss you, but you have a beard. And I'm not gay. Actually, I would totally give you a hetero kiss, too, but you're too far away

  • this

  • can you datamosh on windows vista? please someone help me lol

  • Yes you can. By accident all the time.

  • ?? lol

  • youre awesome

  • Hey thanks for these. Built a Quartz Composer plugin that does this in realtime - totally inspired by these tutorials. Thanks!

  • @merlander You built a QC plugin that does this in real time? Didn't think that was possible because of the need of keyframe manipulation. Where can one see your results?

  • @RedCellDisorder google "bangnoise datamosh"

  • hehe, im Dutch. Mooieschijt, means, 'pretty poo'. I dont think it comes from that :D

  • at work when i test videos i see this at times,,,its more of an error to me than anything hahah :P

  • Hi there ! thanks for this amazing tutorial !

I'm working on PC (on Xp) so ffmpegX isn't available for me T_T, but I found a way to do it anyway !

  • It's nearly the same way, the only difference is that I use VirtualDub to Encode video files for the first step ( I use FFdshow codec which allow to increase the P-Frames rate up to 500). Then, like here, I use Avidemux (which also exist for Xp) to join them, and it works perfect (because when I try to join them directly in VDub, It put back I-frames, and I didn't find a way to disallow it) but anyway Vdub + AviDemux works great to Datamosh on Xp !

  • what did you do in virtualdub? I cant figure out what to do

  • just open your video file in vdub, go to video/compression choose FFdshow and put both of the frame rate up to 500 (the max) and export it.

  • when i try to export it and play it in vlc, it has an error like "VLC does not support the audio or video format "DIB"

    whats wrong with that?

  • Yeahaaaa@crasse!

Ur da 2nd coolest guy here behind datamosher cuz among all these jerks complaining you came up with a solution that worx! First using VirtDub and Avidemux my data was not moshed that much, just some pixels. The right hint was the FFdshow codec which I had to download, install and than showed up in the compression options of Avidemux. thx

  • Great series, man! I watched the Evident Utensil video sometime last year and lost track of it, and then ran into it again and it's still awesome. Thanks for all the info!

  • marry me bob

  • nvm b frames dont matter at all from what i've seen, I wasnt deleting the i-frames properly.

so yeah, moshing works on windows, with virtualdub, looks just as good as the mac outcomes.

  • in other words, virtualdub isnt converting the B Frames to P Frames, so the B Frames stay, therefore no datamosh.

  • Well i've been putting my own avis throught virtualdub, saving them with no key frames, and indeed it does work. However, when I get to avidemux, there are no i-frames, but all the frames are either P or B, going PBPBPBPBP etc in sequence. I've tried saving and the video just appears normal, as B Frames mess it up..hmmm...

  • thank you so much for sharing this technique w/ everyone!

  • anyone know how i can do this on ubuntu?

  • lets get gay. yo.

  • nah. i like to rape bitches

  • Comment removed

  • dumb

  • yea, you're an idiot guy.

  • it is a type of art using bad video!

  • thank you mista

  • hi thanks for the most awsome tutorial

i was wondering if you had any info on what program to use on windows. ive tried with after effects but when you export it adds keyframes to your video anyways . kinda how you said. : /

  • i've heard virtualdub could work, but haven't heard back if it definitely does. if you get any positive results though, please lemme know. I want to put together a kit for all them non-mac users out there...

also i've been doing more experimenting myself and i think even when you convert with ffmpeg (or whatever program) it's going to put i-frames in at any hard cut it finds, no matter if you blast up the interval. so you can prepare for this by adding a frame after each cut and delete it later

  • please please do set up a windows kit! thanks very much for sharing, man!

  • Many thanks been trying to figur this out for ages :O)

  • briliant !

taking howtos to the next level.

  • thanks for explaining.

but you take way to long to explain stuff.

    are you on drugs?

  • almost legally

  • lmao.

well i have a serious question now..

when i download ffmpegx and install the binaries, the mpeg2enc doesn't work.

so when i encode videos according to your instructions, the videos that it makes dont play in anything ... can you help me?

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha, now thats edutainment!

  • Wow! Thanks for putting this together. This is really great.

  • Shrinkidink'd! Genius.

  • You might as well just label this video "Shit I can do and you can't" :(

  • why? bob does a GREAT job explaining how to achieve this technique in these videos.

  • Don't forget B-frames!

  • i'm scared of them... they know too much......

  • Hey there from New Zealand, nice video - you have a natural didactic skill. I'm in the PC camp where we dont have access to FFMpeg etc and am stuck staring at virtual dub...what is recommended for PC users?

  • virtual dub cant do the trick?

    Unfortunately I don't have a PC so I can't test this out...

  • virtual dub no work?

  • throw it in the trash and buy a Mac
