After their career is finally over, U2 will not only leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of rock, they’ll leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of music. Their 'competition' isn't just rock legends like The Beatles, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones-- it's people like Mozart, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. They are truly one of the ALL TIME greats. Anyone who doesn't understand this needs to listen to their ENTIRE catalog.
A fine song inspired by Bono's visit to a display of artworks by Japanese atomic bomb survivors entitled 'The Unforgettable Fire'. The 'actual' video for this had some memorable images which played upon that exhibition too.
This was all Brian Eno, fellow U2 friends. U2 had no concept of making a song like this until they begged Eno and lanoi to be their producers after War. I'm not complaining cause I wouldn't want to hear a War part 2. This to me is the best song on an album that seemed to be unfinished.
You know you meet someone that is special and very mysterious in your life and then shes gone ... People come and go... I don't... In my mind I try to be optimistic in every aspect that life leads me(like water flowing)... These are the only positive words that I care for in this song...
This song is very raw and harsh I posted this song to them hoping that they would see the positive throughout all the negative in the song... All the other words are meaningless to me... These are not...
II think this is the best song from U2. It's just so well composed and performed. Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen junior really show why they are one of the best rhythm duo of all time.
I think you did an amazing job with the video!! I have never made one, but I certainly think this took some time and ability!! It did this beauty of a song, justice ....
I had the chance to go see their 360 tour, and my jaw dropped when they started playing this song! It was an AMAZING moment. If you have not seen this performance, go check it out.
Friends usually slow down , hell they even stop to let you out. Great song. Heard it tonight on a little public radio station here in D/FW. Funny how you can sometimes forget great music over time.
Love this song! Probably my fav pre-90s. Quite a cool wee video there too :) Tutor played this full blast in 1st year of my music production course to highlight the bass guitar n kick drum locking together. Awesome bass line from Adam - up there with new years day for me!
Anyone know the meaning of the lyrics?? Someone must have told me years ago it was about the stardust tragedy in dublin because i always thought it was. And yet it was only the other day when i did a bit of online research did i discover theres not one single trace or mention of that link. The two things that come up are that its about a one night stand or about the hiroshima bomb?..... Strange when u have something in your mindset for so long and not quite sure why!
Great mix. Brings back good memories of Milton Keynes Bowl 1985 the longest day festival. The faith brothers, rammones, billy god im so shit bragg, spear of destiny and REM. What a day
For me, this song will always define who U2 was before going commercial....This song is a Masterpiece. Saw them do this live at JFK Stadium on the Joshua Tree tour in '87....Spellbinding is the only way to describe it.
No one's probably gonna read this, but I’ll say it anyway cuz I feel at least 1 person will. I'm a young designer and graffiti artist, I know there's a million out there but I feel like my art has a unique individual style.
If you just take a min and give me a chance I'll make you a believer. I would love nothing more than to have a loyal following on youtube. If anyone who reads this could press the "THUMBS UP" others will see it. Just a simple button push will make a huge difference.
Every great band has at least a few songs that werent their biggest chart topper or well known at all (probably never released as singles) but really is a classic, when you dig in deep. I think this is one for U2. A masterpiece of the mid80s to mid 90s era for them.
@Madisonrvr R.E.M. was like that also. Their first 4 albums, before they found commercial success w/ Document, were absolute masterpieces that never get played even on stations that play classic alternative.
Love it............. but live it never comes close............. thanks to ENO, the Edge can only play one guitar at a time LIVE, ................guess that never occured to ENO seeing how he never made it!!! OVER PRODUCE!!!!
@tahoevic Not exactly. Egde plays Git and a holding reverb git at the same time as well as he has a button on the floor for Shynth (One). But anyway U2 is dead for a long time (80-91they were great).

@cratwest yeah, i agree. this is when U2 was U2. unforgetable fire was a great time for the band and such an under rated record at the time. they would later become a repetitive commercialized pop band w/ little soul.
Grew up with my parents being big time fans of U2. Dad would often play them on the stereo in the lounge at night when mum was at work and danced with my brother and I, had to keep up entertained somehow lol. Mind you we were like 5 years old. This is definitely one of my all time favourites of theirs, couldn't pick just one though haha.
