Doctor Jesus is such a haunting melody. its a shame this was the only Opera Gershwin ever produced. I love his musical comedies (and, as a pianist, I love and have performed many of his concert works), but his greatest work are the minor gems and sections of the recitatives. And its a shame that this is the only work where we got to see that side of him.

I studied voice with Cynthia Haymon(Bess)for a year. She has a beautiful instrument and is flawless in this performance. She teaches in Illinois and is quite a character in a humorous way. When it set in who I was studying with, I became star struck !!!

I love Rattle's version for being so true to Gershwin's original score, no fooling around. "Doctor Jesus" is perfection.

FYI, the Strawberry Lady/Honey Man/Crab Man sequence represents the passage of one day, morning, noon and evening harvests, and Dr. Jesus' last chance to save Bess.

I love this opera.

Great to see this clip! I worked with Cynthia Clarey (Serena) at Six Flags Over Texas, and she is one of the finest American singers of our times. She is (pardon the pun) a truly unsung genius who should be much better known in her native country!

You betcha! I've sung in the chorus when she has done Carmen, and I can't imagine a Carmen better than hers.

Also in that clip is Marietta Simpson who was the scariest Baba in THE MEDIUM I've ever seen, and she was the funniest Italian Girl ever to visit Algiers! We in the chorus had to stuff parts of our costumes into our mouths to keep from cracking up in performance, even though we'd seen her do the same shtick in rehearsals.
