Take a ruler and measure how far your extended fingers are... It's typically about 4-5 inches right? So it was really more then a once inch punch. A one inch punch would be to place the first joint after the knuckles that you punch with on the person and punch from there, though on me that's still 2 inches, lol. Try it yourself.

That is why Bruce Lee used to do the punch starting from the knuckle joint closest to the fist, generally considered to be about 1 inch is distance. From the fingertips is generally 3-4 inches, though it's called a 3 inch punch.

Lol..yes, when you practice it enough. I have a student that has a football player build, 5'9" and 240lbs. I sent him back about 4 feet and he stumbled and fell from a 1 inch punch and was shocked at the power. When you train right with tendon strengthening, breathing and chi circulation and other physical techniques you can generate a lot of power which can be very effective at close range where most fights occur.
