Carl Verheyan is one of my favorite guitarists, and I find him to be very inspiring to me as a musician, but this song isn't really good. It's pretty unimpressive, actually. His vocal melody and lyrics are mediocre at best, as is the whole concept and musical ideas behind the song. The band is real tight and the playing is great, though!
@ZRANCIS When you're mature enough you'll realize that there is no "better" or "worse" in music. But, I don't forsee that happening any time soon. Go gush over Petrucci then if that's what you want to do, fanboy.
@JordnBee no better or worse? ok, so you'd agree that dave weckl isnt a better drummer than me?
its intellectually irresponsible to have this callous "everythings equal" attitude- because no, its not. people practice hard to become the best and they deserve the recognition. its ridiculous to say what you said- let me ask you, why did you like this video, and some a video fo a 13 year old struggling with sweet child o mine?
so you think lil wayne is as good a guitar player as carl verheyen?
@ZRANCIS Why bother bringing Lil Wayne into this? He's not a guitar player.
The fact is you can't compare Carl Verheyen and Petrucci. They're two completely different styles. It's like comparing Hendrix to Yngwie Malmsteen. Technique wise, Yngwie far surpasses Hendrix, but Hendrix still ends up as #1 on most of the "Greatest Guitar Player" lists.
Do I have this "everything is equal" attitude? Not all the time. It depends on a variety of factors. Just shut up and listen to some good music.
What I don't like about most super-guitarists is that their songs are just an excuse to play the guitar, so they end up writing awful songs. I like Verheyen's playing but the songs ir really bad. I prefer to listen to any pop-rock band rather than this. This stuff is just for guitarists. Players don't understand that to reach people is thousand times better writing a good melody rather than playing a good solo on a really bad song. A song must be an expression of the soul, as any piece of art.
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte Just because you are too stupid too understand this song doesnt mean this song is bad or worse than pop rock band.......I found this song better than pop rock songs so???? Many jazz player dont get their audience bigger than pop singer, so jazz player is worse musican, and jazz player cannot write songs???? Get your things right, JUST because you prefer pop rock songs doenst mean other songs are bad................definetely your taste of musical is S*CKS
@hanifabidin90 First of all, you are insulting, and by that you won't get any respect. Second, I love jazz, fusion and players like Verheyen, Eric Johnson, Carlton, Wes Montgomery, Metheny, Rosenwinkel... bla, bla, bla... Third, you didn't understad anything of what I've said. Fourth, go and listen to Benson, SRV, Mayer, Robben Ford... so you'll see what means being an artist, rather than just an instrumentalist.
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte I agree. A lot of these freaky players (like Carl) could attract a much wider audience if they focused a greater deal of their attention on better vocals, less-wacky song structures and catchier hooks... But then again, if that doesn't come natural and they're forced to suppress some of their creativity then it may not be worth it to some of them.
It's a choice they have to make. Those players you mentioned combine these elements personally.. particularly SRV and FOrd.
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte That's true, but there isn't any "players don't understand" here. This stuff IS for guitarists; that's his intent. I love listening to Mayer but I enjoy this equally when I'm in the mood for guitar music. It's all well and good to go on about how "writing mainstream songs is the only way to reach the mainstream" but there's no fault in the artist if he's not trying to reach the mainstream in the first place. What were you expecting?
@Fishies125 I didn't mean that Verheyen has to write mainstream catchy songs. I like a lot of guitar music, and I like Verheyen's playing. But I mainly like good music. What I tried to say is that some good guitarists are not good composers, so they write awful songs to justify their guitar playing, trying to play a lot of tricky things, scales, etc... very well executed but with no soul.
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte Ya that's true. I'm just saying that I don't think they care. They're having fun with it and making a living and the people they want to entertain enjoy it so I don't think they have to feel obligated to write mainstream styles. Granted, I don't find myself wanting to sing this song but in some styles I don't think that's required. What you described is how a lot of blues music is after all. You listen to hear the head real quick and then proceed to enjoy the musicianship.
@lakaskafad I read recently from one of his blogs that he had around 165 individual pedals kicking around in his collection. Lord knows what the heck he's using here - notice he's got multiple amps in the backline, also, just to mess with us as to how he gets that TONE.
Hi Carl, this is one of my favourite songs of yours, and i love your tone too, what amps are you using here ? I think i see a super lead and an AC30, correct ? are you using both at the same time ?

... if i met him i would have to kill him however. nothing personal you understand but i want that strat and i want the 3 tone sunburst one even more!
@patbum Its well done, I just get it cause I heard this lots of times, and the camera changes same time as the cut, so its more a video cut then audio mixing. I think it happened cause: 1- The full versions was bigger and they wanted to shorten it. and 2-(the one I believe) carl simply has missing himself on the solo trying to improvisi too much :) and they edited the video to hide it. Look hows Carls is concearned about the solo after thata part(to not commit nay oder mistakes). My guess only.
Carl, Re "A live DVD of a June MI concert will be forthcoming later this year with more cameras, proper sound, etc." - Will it be on Blu-ray?? Pleeeaasse!!
The video was shot LIVE at rehearsal, with minimal micing, cameras, etc. Just Nigel and an assistant in there crawling around shooting stuff as the Band played. It's a document - versus a promotional video - of the guys in a rehearsal at Mates. What you see is what you get without "fixing." A live DVD of a June MI concert will be forthcoming later this year with more cameras, proper sound, etc.
It happens all time?? Why!? Great chops on the guitar but no chops with the voice.. Great vocal takes just as much shed time knowing when your singing well.... This guy could sing really well with the same effort he gives the guitar..
@buddo1999 IMO, singing in this style of music is more about creating a mood/feeling, rather than being an amazing singer. Carl's a guitarist first and foremost, and probably only sings because it makes him more accessible than just being an instrumental guy. I think Carl does a great job - he's not the world's greatest singer, but what he does works for the music, and that's most important. Just my opinion of course.
Actually, Eric was not one of Carl's students, although he has had many - including some very big names (John Fogerty, etc.). They are coming from very similar influences (Beck, Bloomfield, Clapton, Hendrix). I double-checked with Carl for you. You might want to check out Carl's official channel here.
@alefenili Carl wouldn't have written he taught Eric as he didn't. He and Eric have played together and are friendly although they don't see each other that often. I'm Carl's manager and he doesn't scam like that.
You should check the videos on Carl's dedicated YouTube channel if you dig his stuff. He hands selects the one's he wants on there.
