The XR line was meant for trail riding and didn't sport the horsepower, chassis or suspension the YZ400F or any of the two-stroke motocross bikes did for racing.

Yep, there sure was. Yamaha was the first to come out with a mainstream 4-stroke motocross bike, it was the YZ400F back in 1998. The displacement was increased to 426cc in 2000, and again to 450cc in 2003.
