roger casement like most people of his time was by his own admission an imperialist as a young man but later became a fierce critic of imperialism and exploitation he exposed the crimes that belgian authorities were committing in the congo and also abuses in south america
Hey, for you people who wants to know more about this irish figure, and some of the irish history related to him (with some fiction of novelistic) read the late book of the winner of the Nobel 2010 in literature, peruvian writter Mario Vargas Llosa, "El sueño del Celta" (something like "The dream of the celtic"). Great book, you can also learn about some of what happened in africa and here in my country, Perú, reading this book. I hope it is in english yet.
@matiasraul01 Yo he sabido sobre este libro por uno ano hora, It seems ironic that someone like MVL writes a book about Casement, knowing something about MVL opinion on the Spanish Conquest of Peru with Pizarro and Atahualpa 'It was a good thing and made the Indians civilized' I'm very angry as an Irishman that MVL can have the 'conjones' to write something on Casement who defied imperialism amd colonialism at every turn
I google my last name Casement just to see what would come up i was very bored but after looking at a 100 windows a came across Sir Roger Casement now i am getting interseted in his history so thanks for putting the video up. btw i am scottish not ireish
1932 As was the custom at the time, Casement's body was buried in quicklime in the prison cemetery at the rear of Pentonville Prison, where he was hanged. Michael Keogh and Tom Casement (Roger Casement's brother) went to Pentonville Prison in 1932 and removed a bone fragment with a steel plate.
His brother Tom knew there would be a plate and thats the only reason the fragment wasn't dust, nothing else was left but quicklime. They placed the remains in a cigar box in his mothers grave in the old Kilgobbin Cemetery, Sandyford. The Irish Government knew of this in 1932 as they had refused to go to Pentonville at the time to claim Roger Casements remains. There the only tangible remains of Roger Casement still lie today.
In 1965, Casement's body was politically repatriated to Ireland by the Irish Government and, after a state funeral, was buried with full military honours in the Republican plot in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin after lying in state at Arbour Hill for five days, during which time an estimated half a million people filed past his coffin.
@zubnala who really gives a bollox if he was gay or not? He went to Germany - at that time "Irelands" enemy as it was Britain's - and not just percured 20,000 rifles but got a lift home in a submarine. The guy's a legend. RIP Sir Roger Casement. Tiocfaidh Ar La
As the Irish patriot Roger Casement (executed by the British after the 1916 uprising in Ireland) put it:
I know of two tragic histories in the world - that of Ireland and that of Macedonia. Both of them have been deprived and tormented.
Casement was speaking primarily of the Macedonians who then inhabited the lands that fell within the borders of the ancient Macedonian homeland. R.I.P. Roger Casement

Matias, Vargas Llosa write about Roger, defended his actitude, defended his personality . The book of Vargas llosa is a good news to
ireland, to Africa and to the history.
Vargas llosa denunced in several times the conquested of the spanian in Americe, but he said that finally two culture go togheter for 500 years. ,
he is not an imperialist, absolutly no, he suports the democracy in every book that he writes and he attacks the dictatures.
