wow the way Rip was stumbling i thought he was going to pass out from a severe concussion. then he hits free throws and finishes the game like nothing
If you look at the video closely near the end, you see that Hamilton elbows Artest in the ribs, and Artest then looks to the ref and is moving his arm towards the ref to ask why a foul was not called on Hamilton, when Hamilton is inadvertantly hit with his forearm. If it was intentional on Artest's part, he would be looking right at Hamilton when he did it.
@14adamst Artest didn't make direct contact, but with that mask on, it can easily be pushed into Hamilton's nose and hurt him pretty badly. Overreaction by Artest, not a vicious foul but it definitely is a flagrant foul.
Yes, Rip did what he could to sell it, but it doesn't change the fact that Artest intentionally struck a guy in the face who had already suffered two broken noses that season. Artest knew exactly why Rip was wearing a mask, which is why it stands out as dirty to me. If he had done the same thing to, let's say, Chauncey, it wouldn't have been such a big deal, but intentionally striking a dude in the face who is already wearing a protective mask screams "DIRTY!" to me.
Regardless of whether you want to argue whether on the first contact there was an elbow thrown, Rip most definitely raises his elbow to throw one in Artest's direction right before he gets hit.. Artest just got there first.
looks like ron ron got accidentally nut-shotted by rip trying to post? i mean, you mess with a bull you get the horns right? not saying it's right to whack a guy but this is ron ron at the peak of his physical aggression and you're going to try and body up to him on the block?
How can Grantland say this series was best remembered for this "vicious" foul? I remember the Tayshaun Prince block still and I forgot this by the end of the game.
@NintendoLegendDotCom it sounds like you're defending Artest (I hope), because if you go down like that in a street game, you might as well find a new court bc you're not gonna be allowed back
@Oblander I hear ya, but one thing: Pride over place. I'll take my name elsewhere if the court won't have it. I know this sounds dorky coming from a four-eyed white guy with Nintendo in his YouTube name, but back in the day...
@gheene1010 Doubt all you want, but the street definitely helped make me tough. Then again, it's real easy to sound "tough" on the Internet, right? ;) Have a lovely lifetime.
All things considered, this swung the series and maybe a title. Indiana was just as equipped to beat the Lakers defensively. 59-59 with four minutes left...crazy how good both these teams were defensively.
here via Grantland. I agree. This does seem really light. Probably unnecessary for him to have his forearm up that high, but because of how Rip backed down on him a second earlier, as a basketball player, I totally get it.
seemed pretty light really.....sure an elbow to the face is flagrant but artest didn't put anything into it and Rip milked that shit for all it was worth.... If it wasn't for this and the ensuing serioes loss, the Malice at the Palace may never have happened. Just a thought

Complete flop. Running into a forearm and falling over. 1:11 has the best angle. Ron is even staring at the ref.

LOL you guys are funny. Yeah, Rip milked it. Maybe next time Artest shouldn't have his up that high (it was obvious what he was doing).
And what exactly did Rip do? Backed him down lightly? Please.

This just reminds me of how much I hated those Pistons teams, and NBA basketball in general in that era. What a bunch of flopping cowards.

Vicious? LOL. Completely unnecessary and uncalled for, but Rip flopped and then played it up to make it seem worse.
