  • "OH MY SWEET BLACK JACK CODY PALANCE!" TO SEE "YOU" AGAIN MY BROTHER. ..............THEY SAY TIME FLYS WHEN YOU -R- HAVING FUN. IT HAS BEEN "HELL" W/OUT YOU "MY MR. M.B. M." HAVE I DONE EVERYTHING WRITE, RITE RIGHT? I GUESS NOT. 1985 IS A LONG & HELL-A-CIOUS AMOUNT OF TIME! ...I WILL KEEP PRAYINGoxo

  • what a great bunch of fans..there are my all time favorites then just the ones I love...never a better sound..got all their vinyl myself. What a way to spend the night..or day..love them always

  • best thin g to happen memphis entertainment ,in that magical time.

    thnak aces.

  • Looking forward to seeing the Aces in Australia in August. Great band!

  • I have the original recording and I must agree it is the best. In fact I have all the Aces stuff and still spin them on vinyl. This song constantly pops up in my head, as do many tunes recorded by the Aces. "The Last Letter Home" is also another of my favorites. I love them all actually. They sure have had some great album covers as well. I will always cherish The Amazing Rhythm Aces!

  • @Selomo1967 Leo's version is on the tube, just,( like the good book say) seek and you shall find!

  • It's always good to drop by this site and check out Russell and The Aces, this is just one fabulous tune!

  • @redsfanstu

thanks for stopping by and always glad to meet another Ace's fan.

  • Saw these guys in nashville while I was stationed at Fort campbell in 1979. the best show I have ever seen

  • Russell your the top man..need a guitar man? call me know them all..will work

    for free

  • Great song and for a change someone posted a great video to go along with it. gREAT POST.

  • @starr522

    Thanks!

  • I did not realize the Rhythm Aces did this first...I'd only heard Tanya's. I think Tanya does it better. Rhythm Aces are a great band, I just like Tanya's better.

  • Here in Holland we didn't know this band while they were in their best days. But belive me, even the Eagles can't give me the emotions this bunch deliver me. even in 2010

  • I enjoy this tune thank you gunslinger for posting it

  • ok look tanya tucker did cover this song WITH the Aces as the backing band-it was billed as Tanya Tucker WITH The Amazing Rhythm Aces the reason tanyas hit was good is because The Aces were the band carrying the tune

  • @RaisinBran017

    Thanks for clearing that up.

I think I had also read somewhere that Tanya did the song WITH the Aces.

  • love the aces, takes me back

  • i love this

  • @z28pawpaw

Thanks for checking it out and commenting!

  • i love this song

  • this song reminds me of when i was young, i still love it

  • This guy sayin' some other version is "better" is AFU...this is Memphis at it's best! Don't search like this "troll" is tryin' to get you to do...

I want this song by the ARA played at my funeral...a baby boomer statement about-- and for his country...if you didn't serve in southeast Asia...don't even try to understand the meaning of this song...or at least...what it meant to us...we stopped dancing...but we remembered...

  • Good ole' ARA,,,, do some of you remember the day?

  • I'd think Tanya Tucker could certainly kick some butt on this...but neither that version, nor Leo Sayer's seems available to compare, eh?

  • I know i am old but i don't remember Leo Sayer covering this song I do remember Tanya Tucker WITH the Aces doing this song and it was great

  • Tanya Tucker's cover is the best of them al and blows away both Leo Sayer & Amazing Rhythm Aces combined!

  • @landrykkb

    I haven't heard Leo's or the Tanya/Ace versions so I can't say which I like better.

Maybe if someone posts the other versions you guys can let me know?

  • @landrykkb Tanya Tucker??/ bahahaha you gotta be kidding

  • @mikem1154 No,I'm not kidding! She did cover this and I personally liked hers better, but it's a matter of personal preference which one is better. It's subjective, which means open to interpretation.

  • @landrykkb :

You are FOS and AFU...This is the one and only version that counts. It's Memphis music at it's best. I want this song by the AMA played at my funeral as a baby boomer's exit message to...and for... his country. If you didn't serve in the southeast Asia conflict, you have no idea what this song means to us...we stopped dancing...but we remembered...just let me see you dance.

  • @RickTNRebel No,I didn't serve in that.Look, you have your preferences and I have mine.,so where you served should have f@#$ all to do with it.My hats off to you for serving for your country, otherwise.

  • Leo Sayer DID record this song "dancing the night away" (unfortunately not on youtube)

but a much better rendering as far as voice and the blending and variety of instruments..

Rocker53zero ...get your facts right !!!.

  • leo sayers version is awesome , the best thing he ever did , someone post it,

  • tanya tucker had hit with these guys and this song back in 1977 it was a good colaberation

  • Saw this band in Kearney, Nebraska with the Atlantic Rhythm Section in the late 70's..

  • Right on ! Leo Sayer's version very good. Any nice people have this song to post?

  • Saw the band at Kearney State College in Nebraska in the late seventies.

  • O.K hang on a minute.... Leo Sayer never covered this song. His song was entitled, "YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCING"...

  • @rocker53zero

Like you I remember Leo Sayer's "YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCING".

I don't remember Leo covering this song.

  • Vinyl version bets this

  • @diggers1100 Vinyl always winr ... Full Mhz wave pattern is better than clipped music... CD's are for the car.

  • Comment removed

  • Love the Aces..wish they'd play the West Coast!

  • Listen to the recorded version back in 1976 or so. No one could do it better. This is a bunch of OLDER Aces most likely not all original members.Once you hear the original you'll forget all about Leo Sayer and his dead skunk.

  • great job on the video with the song!

  • Thanks, patchouli710

  • This is a lovely song so it's good to listen to it - but Leo Sayer's version was indeed different class. If anyone had film of him singing it, that would make a great addition to the Youtube archives.

  • The many times I've listened to this thinking of a lost love.....Play on................

  • I'm also a big fan of the Aces.I really enjoy your Video as well.I do believe "The end is not in sight" is my favorite. If ya ain't seen it,check it out!

  • Hey Chungilla, glad you like the Aces & my Videos( I also did "The End Is Not in Sight :-)

  • You did a GREAT job on your video, arkgunslinger.

That cut you did at about 2:06, where Fred and Ginger dance out on that outdoor deck, just as the piano solo kicks in is super-effective. They never looked so good.

It makes you wonder just how great Fred and Ginger would have looked if they could have danced to some great rock dance music instead of studio orchestras.

I love the girl at the end too. Just an outstanding video job set to a great, great song.

  • TahoeLegend , Thanks!

  • One of Smiths greatest. James Hookers piano work on the original was sheer poetry. Great to here Billy Earheart on key's though , a lovely man and great to see ARA up for another award this year !

  • Thank You. Good Job.

  • This version is pretty spectacular but it's missing the greatest guitar solo in the history of the world! Still my favorite group after a lot of years.

  • My all time favorite group and have been since the 70's . Was broken hearted when they stopped recording in the 80's but was extatic when they started back up

  • southernman745 , pleased to meet another ARA fan!

  • One of my favourite songs. I must admit Leo Sayer's version is my favourite

  • I like the Rhythm Aces, but yeah, I think Leo Sayer nailed that one .

Can't seem to locate it on YouTube, though!

Thanks for refreshing my memory on Leo doing that one!

    Best.

  • loZoneranger560, Several people have mentioned Sayer's version but, I can't say I remember it. I just might have to check it out.

  • @loZoneranger560 Leo was and still is a good wee singer, but he's a cabaret act. A good one, but still a cabaret act.....

  • @rocker53zero . I think you're entirely right about Leo Sayer. And the Aces have a substance to them he'd never touch. It's an oddity, I realize, but I very much liked Sayer's version of this song...and I heard it way back before I knew the Aces originated it. Leo Sayer had, what...3 songs out? Not that this makes him bad, but I agree entirely that he's a cabaret singer....and I'd not go looking for any of the rest of his songs. This was just a good choice on his part.

    Best,

    Zone

  • Don't forget that Tanya Tucker covered this in 1977 and had a hit with it as well.

  • heavent heard leo sayers version for a long time.much oblidge if anyone can load it on youtube

  • Awesome! I saw the Aces in Houston in 1976 when I was 12. My sister was really into them and I was lucky enough to go along. I had forgotten how great they are. Thanks for sharing!

  • Firehawk6sp, Your sister has good taste and you were indeed lucky :-)

  • totally great...i like the way tanya tucker sangs it but...this is good too...thanks Rob for sharing......yayyyyyy!...lets dance.....thats all i do......

  • quiltbee, I didn't know Tanya covered this song. I'll have to check her version out.

  • Wow - like going back in time - I have listened to the Aces since the early 80's - They are still as awesome as ever - I didn't realize I could still get their music - I spent $80 20 years ago to get all of their albums on cassettes!!!! Maybe now I can go one their website and upgrade to CD's!

  • blondbom1us, Glad to see you suporting the ACEs!

  • One of the best memories from my childhood. What a great song. Thanks for putting it on here.

  • Velforth, Glad to meet another Ace's fan.

Click on More Info and you can find links to their website and MySpace

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • The studio version of this track features my all time favourite guitar solo - wish it went on forever!

  • Thank you SnackleForkOfEmir for being the first person I have ever seen on line who has echoed a belief I have privately held for years -- that the guitar solo on the studio recording of DTNA is one the finest guitar solos ever recorded and certainly my favourite...such a great and sad song....and I had the pleasure of seeing the ARA's in Sydney, Australia circa 1980 supporting (of all people) Rita Coolidge, and of course they stole the show...especially doing "Who Will Your Next Fool Be"....!!!

  • Looks like I should've used the studio version!

  • Yes, could you post it?

  • Never got to see the Aces live, found out they did a gig in London the week after it was on!

Got into the Aces in the 70's when the DJ Johnny Walker used to play "3rd Rate Romance" 10 times a day! There's a bootleg somewhere of Elvis Costello doing a version of it.

I think i have everything they've recorded, but still looking for that unreleased unedited version of "Dancing The Night Away" which doesn't exist!

  • OMGosh...this is soooooooo great!!! I love it! I love it! I love it! 5***** but totally deserve more!!! ♥

  • Thanks Brianna!

  • Damofino! Russell and the Aces should be declared a national treasure! They are the kind of band that can slip past you, but, if they get their claws into your psyche, these boys are hard to shake! What a tune, nothing could or should be added, from beginning to end this puppy smokes! God save The Amazing Rhythm Aces! Arkgunslinger good work as usual on the upload, the pix were dynamite! Thanks to You Tube for providing the available space! And as always: ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS!

  • 9erfandex, thanks again!

Don't forget to support these guys by buying a CD, song or maybe something from their website.

  • You CANNOT top this song! Just perfect. Gary Allan's "Smoke Rings..." No. 2! Thes guys had it all! where'd they go?

  • calepie, they're still around and touring. Please click the 'more info'(near the yellow Subscribe button) at the top right and you'll find links to their website and and MySpace.

  • Never saw these guys but sure do like their music.

  • I'm Butch McDade's daughter and I grew up around the music and around the band so it's really great and it really makes me happy to see it up here for everyone to hear. Thank you :)

  • CapinRaccoon, Your dad and Russell created something wonderful in the ACEs. Their music is a grand memorial to your father.

  • This is a slightly different version than the one on the vinyl album. Great stuff and the aces always impress me. It's great to see the band re-emerge with Chocked full of country goodness and Out of the blue. Just a pity they aren't available on vinyl.

  • rocker53zero, This one is from "Alive in America". I've got an original Ace's vinyl stashed away :-) but my turntable is broken:(

  • I've loved these guys for years. Just thought i would you tube them and see what comes up. Man, they are so under the radar rated, one of my alltime favorite bands!

  • Thanks for stopping by and Glad to meet another Aces fan!

  • Hey, I love them too. Do you know if there is any video of them out there. I would like to buy a dvd of them playing Third Rate Romance among others

  • Try asking arkgunslinger, he seems to know alot about the ARA. Most of the stuff I have of them is on LP. Chocked Full of Country Goodness and Out of The Blue are two CD's I do have. Too Stuffed to Jump is my favorite LP.

  • I don't know of a DVD but, there could be one out there somewhere.

  • can't remember when I first heard AMA but it\s at least 30 yrs. ago. Please if you know of a video or DVD let me know, thankfully catsandtats

  • Loved this video. Liked the girl dancing on the beach.I love this music.Keep up the good work. I got to buy their album.

  • Thanks, threattgal. The dancer is

Queenishtar777. She has a channel here on YT.

Click on "more info" and you'll find links to the Ace's website and Queenishtar777's channel.

  • What a great arrangement. Russell Smith has a great voice and the band is magnificent!!!!!!!!

  • 6sudali, I Agree 100%

  • For over 30 years I have been playing the ARA's on my shows and I still get an occasional e mail from Billy E. This song is stunning in its build up and Russell Smith's voice still has a great tone. Both band and songs are highly respected but for the large part un-discovered.

  • I can still remember when I purchased 'To Stuffed to Jump' Just Saturday I took this CD along with another (two albums per CD) and took a small road trip to Bannack... Thank you, this is a beautiful sideshow... Beautiful song...

  • Thanks for stopping by Stellasgarden!

  • thank you for posting this

    brings back beautiful memories

  • You are welcome, lilyvonschtuppp and thanks for watching.

  • BIG FAN of ARAs this song brings back so many great memories! Saw them in person back in the 70's, every one of the musicians in the original group were stars in their own right!!Anyone ever listen to this song with a good pair of headphones? Unbelievable!!

  • texasbluesjmo, Lucky Dog! Oh yeah I have a great pair of Sony headphones I use at work and the mp3 of this is one of my favorites.

(No YT allowed at work!) Also Scott Miller, Paul Thorn, and Robert Earl Keen.

  • Nice one, faved of course! Thanks!

    Mandy

  • Thanks Mandy!

  • Nothing like great tunage and beautiful images :)

  • awesome video, Well put together

  • thanks kjmix1!

  • Looks great! Congratulations! I love the song and video. I love the way it looks like Fred is singing. I am a big fan of his and pleased to appear on a video with him. Great arrangement and production of the song. Love, Ishtar.

  • Thank you Queenishtar777 for the use of your video and glad you liked it. Of course I never seem to get the video to come out exactly as planned(life gets in the way! lol )

  • Does this bring back more memories than one!Besides living across the hall from the keyboardplaye ofARAces wife&baysitting their daughter,KellyKathleen who lived with me till she moved to Wisconsin,I remember dancing on quite a few beaches myself.Did a ballet at MaxineKent'sJazz&SupperClub,Dallas,TX,while they were playing&made them angry asIgot applause thruout the song&they complained to my boss Maxine about the interuptions! Were you dancing by the Miss.River?Ihave many times. You're very good.

  • One of the best "Lost Love" songs ever.

    Thanks for this.

  • you're welcome bluegills2!

  • Oh yes!!

    Excellent job, excellent!!

The studio version of this will always be my favourite Aces track, and the guitar solo my favourite guitar solo!

I worked out the chords to this many moons ago and still love to play along - until the guitar solo, where i sit and stare at the speakers and feel, in the words of Billy Connolly, like "i am playing guitar with one hand - and its sticking out of my arse!!".

Thanks for posting, good job! .... oh, and more Aces please!!

  • thanks snackleforkofemir

  • Russell Smith is awesome, Some of their stuff is still hard to find, Thanks for thus one,PN.

  • Thanks PN. Several people had requested this song and it's one of my favorites.

  • I love many genres of music - rock, swing, blues, bluegrass, classical, Celtic, Old-time fiddle, jazz, etc etc. I'm not a huge country music fan, but Too Stuffed To Jump is still one of my top-10 favorite albums of all time. The piano intro on the original version of this song still gives me chills. This is a great live version, and a nice video. Thanks Arkgunslinger. Go Aces!

  • babbchuck, Yeah I had a hard time choosing but, in the end I liked the vocals especially on the chorus and the "live" feel to this version just a tiny bit better.

Can you believe how good these guys are live?

  • fine work ark! i appreciate a lot your advise, bkos i´m a long run follower of the ARS...in my adolescence, with a little pocket money, i was always looking (and searching for a few pesetas) on the bargain bins of my hometown Madrid the ARS gifted vinyls...BIG thanks for this emotional broadcasting!

  • wasntborntofollow, thank you friend! I see you're a Dave Edmonds and Nick Lowe too.

    You've got good taste.
