Haha fob joe. Hey I just joined the club if you ever see me down there say what's up. I'll be using my AR. I didn't know you are allowed to go prone that's cool!
I found a company on the Kel Tec owners page that makes components for Kel Tec weapons. They have a forend for the SU-16 that I think is better than Kel Tecs. It is pricey ($140)but is also made of Aluminum. Check it out at redlionprecision
I just got a su-16c and have no jamming issues. I want to add your forend. looks like it is pretty reasonable on Kel Tec's website....also thinking of adding the AR adjustable stock from Kel Tec.
@gaddywack123 I just bought the Adjustable stock for mine and I love it. the pistol grip adds better mobility in tactical enviroments and the stock adds better comfort.
AR style rifles in California were $1000 on the low end in 2007. The "Off list lower" movement was not in full effect and law enforcement was uneducated on their legality. Several brave California citizens had to be guinea pigs. The SU-16 is a different animal. Light, inexpensive, portable, simple. Don't get me wrong. I love the AR rifles. Got 4 of them myself. SU-16 is a niche carbine but most won't use it in a way to fully appreciate its utility. Happy shooting.
@fobjoe oo ok and i did think about getting one of the su-16 cause they do look pretty cool but i see that they jam alot but i see in some videos like nutnfancy (who has great videos) whos never jams.
whats ur su-16 is it good does urs jam alot? and happy shooting
@fobjoe I live in Cali and I really want this gun. Hows the reliability/durability of this gun? It's my only concern really. I want a gun that will go bang every time. Would you say that this gun is on par with AR-15 reliability?
@SuperSneakySniper The reliability with the stock magazines was not great,. once I switched to better mags those reliability issues went away. I don't run my guns too hard but I'd say it was as reliable as my ARs and more so than my AKs. kinda contradictory from the norm but my experience with reliability has favored the ARs. the trigger and sights are nothing to brag about on the SU but for utility or beater gun it's a great choice in my opinion.
@fobjoe lol that's funny. Well, does it work well with those standard cheap military steel AR mags? The ones that sell for like 10-18$ each? I have like 3 of those, so if those worked it'd be great. That's SO wierd, some people say the mags it comes with are great, then others hate those mags, then some say get P-mags, then some say get Military mags.... CONFUSING! When did you get ur SU? I hear some of the older mags they come with are tradable for thier better mags.
@SuperSneakySniper if your cheap military steel AR mags are reliable in your AR then they should work fine in your SU. I used an old GI mag but switched to magpul followers. pmags and my colt mag work fine but the GI mag's grooves allow it to be stored in the stock. Mine was bought in early 2007. Never bothered with trading the mags
@SuperSneakySniper Very reliable, but fussy about high capacity mags. Loves the aluminum ones and for some reason did not like the Plastic Magpuls. I have a video on here of me and a buddy going full zombie in the Nevada desert. Just type in SU16E Shootem up. .
It's slightly in the kel tec more but it's mostly negligible as a .223. I'll attribute this to the lighter weight and less straight-lined movement of the bolt during recoil.
I know that the surrounding area is part of the Bureau of Land Management and on their website it says you can target shoot within their boundaries. Do you know of people or have you ever just walked off the Otay mountain trail and went target practicing? I was thinking of doing but am a little hesitant because of the Border Patrol presence there.
I added a bushmaster aK74 style muzzle brake and switched the stock handguard/bipod for the railed one. I'd recommend switching to AR magazines with anti-tilt followers to prevent FTFs.
The factory mags gave me some problems originally before the break in but once I switched to mags with magpul followers that all went away. The charging handle cannot be followed or the round will not chamber properly. Pretty much standard with any semi auto rifle.
Thanks for the expedient reply, man. It was the first 2 times that I took the weapon to the range that I was experiencing the malfunctions. Kel Tec does not mention in their manual that there is about a 200 round break in period (I had to learn this from one of their techs over the phone), so I went over to Ammo Bros and got the new mags. Seems to be jam free now. Did you have to break yours in as well?
Why would you buy a heavy scope, heavier bi-pod, adding a rail, more weight for the hand grips, all this on a rifle that tries to be as light as possible, (let alone cheap ammo)AND THEN bitch about it's accuracy. Makes zero sense.
Not bitching about it's accuracy. It's a good rifle for what is was meant to do and accurate enough for practical purposes. It's just not a rifle to invest expensive accessories like an AR. It was my first rifle and I was under the impression I could get everything I needed in this little package. It's a niche gun and I appreciate it. We all gotta start somewhere
function with wolf is fine. I've also shot federal xm855 without problem. The SU-16 is definitely a niche rifle. It's light, easily mounts optics, and uses AR mags. Mini-14s are overpriced in my opinion, but rock solid. I would just get a .223 Saiga over a mini-14 as they are cheaper, utterly reliable, and more accurate than you would believe. I'll always suggest an AR-15 or Saiga over the SU-16 unless your purposes fit the niche.
Great video, I think this might be my next investment!!! Looks like a fun .223 opposite to the mini 14. What muzzle brake are you using??? Nice Vid!!!
Thanks for the kind words. That's a Bushmaster AK-74 style muzzle brake. Just a word of advice, don't invest more than $500 into this gun :D It will not consistently shoot MOA but it is still an awesome plinker. If looks aren't a big deal, I also recommend the RRA Saiga .223 (or any caliber for that matter). It will save you 200 bucks at least.
I was shooting roughly 3-4 MOA, basically a fist size. My shots started grouping up due to the hot barrel. I've never tried with match grade ammo because it seems like a waste of money given the platform. I'd say the accuracy is near the same as my 16" Saiga .308 (which ain't saying much given I shoot wolf out of that too)
It's all I use in this gun. If it ain't lacquered I don't worry. There are a few reports with people having problems with wolf, which contributes to alot of people who refuse to use it.
Haha fob joe. Hey I just joined the club if you ever see me down there say what's up. I'll be using my AR. I didn't know you are allowed to go prone that's cool!

Hey Fobjoe, what kind of mags are you using? In my experience, the factory mags are unreliable and have had decent luck with ProMags.

it's a bushmaster 10 rder with magpul follower. Pretty much if you have problems with mags, you can USUALLY trace it to the follower. happy shooting.

nutnfancy is pretty 'eh. I really can't recommend him as an authority worth anything more than what you're paying to get his opinion.

Yea, I'd much rather get my reviews from a guy hiding behind his computer on a forum with plenty of innuendo and elitism thrown in.

1. You dont pay nutn anything
2. He states himself that he doesnt believe he is the "end all be all" of guns but far from it.
3. He has imo the most thorough reviews of guns/knives/dangerous things on this here interwebs.
