Beautiful H535! I have a '91 blonde flamed maple. Thinking I might throw some lessons up here too. Been playing since I was 11 - 25 years now, was a jazz major in college. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. Very nice approach to your lessons. Do you get into the theory end of things? I think I may have a very simple yet effective approach for novice and intermediate players. I just want to complement you on your clear and simple teaching style geared toward the student and not yourself.
@TheMangisJebeh im 44 just started 6 months ago..regret so much i didnt start as a kid i love it so much...i enjoy learning theory also...so much to take in...any advice?
Hey man, this is a very cool lesson! ive just created some beginner courses that you might want to check out on my channel. Its the Hub of a new website >> RexPearson. com << would love for you to check it out and let me know what you think
Probably the most useful video ive watched on u tube, not only is it very clear and easy to understand, but he explains the theory so well that even I understood it.
And what is amazing about the video is that it isnt your standard, "copy this lick and you can be cool" type of thing... but its something that will enable you to be very creative, especially in a jam situation.
That video was sick! My only two questions are do you always use the D or Dm shapes to move around or can you use a C chord and move the root up a whole step and would that be a D chord? And how do you know what the root note is? I know its the name of the chord and usually the lowest note but on the D chord its on the 2nd string. Thanks!
@SanFranGiants2010 The reason you couldn't use a C shape in any position is because the G and high E are open strings in this chord's structure. Therefore, when you move this C shape around you are adding an open G and E to everything, and these notes are not a part of every chord. However, you do end up getting cool sounds that will usually complement a given chord. Try the C shape 2nd string 5th fret with a normal D in the background to see what I mean.
@SanFranGiants2010 As far as how you know what the root note is when you are playing the D or Dm shapes, the root will always be your ring finger. Now, that doesn't tell you a whole lot if your friend plays a Gm and in a split second you need to know where the Gm is on the neck. For this I would recommend memorizing a few key spots (ie middle finger on 7th for a G, 12th for a C) and then you should be able to quickly memorize the surround chords. At least, this works for me.
@iluvmyaxe I believe he plays it at 10:10 It is the D that is used in Stairway to Heaven. XX4232. I think he is leaving out the high F# and playing XX432x. It is actually just the CAGE version of C. Play an open C and move it up two frets. X54232
I recently subcribed to your free blues lessons, and after 20 yrs of playing I transformed my rock into Spanish music, thank you so much Marty you are the King of Kings with the guitar, do you play any other instrument as I want to compliment what I have learned and transform my music vocabulary onto another level, Keep Rocking dude .xxxxxxxxx
If you know the notes on the B string, the chord you are playing is whatever note your ring finger is playing on the B string.
For example, on a normal D chord, your ring finger sits on the 3rd fret of the B string, which is a D note. To play a B chord, put your ring finger on the twelfth fret and your other two fingers on the 11th, etc.
Hi. The camera makes it look like his ring finger is involved, but it isn't fretting anything. If you watch his right hand, he's only playing the G, B, and high E strings.
At around 9:55 he rolls his hand forward a bit and you can see that his ring finger isn't involved. He just slid up a basic D minor two frets.
Also, I posted above, if you know the notes on the B string, the chord you are playing is whatever note your ring finger is playing on the B string (for the D shape).
Sweet. I've been playing guitar for 40 years...always knew these little chords were there, but never knew how to apply them. It's like....well, magic! Thanks!!

Excellent lesson. I think it would be helpful to mention the root note (B string) in that shape which makes it an F, G, A, B chord etc and how to find it on the B string instead of having to remember which fret each chord is on. If you did mention it in the lesson and I missed it, my apologies for being redundant. Great lesson and a very useful chord shape.

I think you should just try different things, find notes anywhere on the fretboard (despite rules) and do unorthodox things as long as they sound good. I never liked learning by the book, I dont even know most of the chord names, but I know what sounds good, and I think thats a better way of knowing music, learning by the book seems to lead to very generic sounding music at times. Ive played that E chord countless times, didnt know it was a trick or an E chord, i just knew it sounded good
Anyway. I really enjoy unorthodox stuff, but some of the music I really like you can't even begin to touch without at least a level of understanding of theory- Arabic music and the maqam system, which is based on quarter tones, not semi-tones.
You can learn microtonal music by ear, of course, but it's a lot harder because the intonation is a lot more subtle and can vary from song to song.
yeah i totally agree, first i tried to learn some scales, i learned minor pentatonic scales, but i practiclly made my own scale, that i follow now, when i make a solo, or just a nice rhythm. even tho i'm still a beginner at the guitar but i still feel much more confertable with those notes, i've found myself that i think sound good and i also find it alot easier, to play after what YOU sound good, alot easier to improvise, to make it sound good, of course you should learn scales n stuff anyways.
that is kinda true in the sense that exploring the guitar is important and learning for yourself is good, but for songwriters music theory is a great way to know what melodies to play with chords so your not just hitting notes.
This will sound weird, but I compare "theory vs. 'knowing what sounds good'" to typing on a keyboard. You have your 'hunt & peck' types who can fiddle around until they find the key they need. And then you have your "home row" types who don't have to look at the keyboard b/c they already know where the letters are. Knowing basic theory eliminates a lot of the 'hunt-and-peck-until-you-find-what- sounds-right 'guesswork of guitar playing. Then you can worry about embellishing.
I can see what you mean, but I think typing on a keyboard and creative musical expression are a biitt too far awayf rom each other, lol, if you know what I mean. I mean thats just it, after fiddeling around enough you memorize what sounds came from where on the fretboard anyways, so in a way ur teaching your own ear not just your brain NAMES and stuff.
Outstanding Marty. I've been playing for years and with getting more into actual music theory, it's all starting to make better sense now. To me it's always been the "D over here chord" and the "D up there chord". lol.
This makes for great basic acompanyment. Thanks for the video.
i know this is gonna sound wierd but you sir have just saved my ass!

Cheers.
