thanks, Michiel, I got to hear Jerry Douglas play, with Alison Krauss, in San Francisco, a few years ago, at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. This guy, Rob Ickes, was referred to me by a buddy, yesterday, MIchiel1972:
(can't post the url here, apparently, but you can search for him on youtube.. )
My friend also suggested listening to Tony Rice, playing Shenandoah.
@jscotthales I am not sure who the slide/dobro guitarplayer is, but he looks like Dan Dugmore. Anyway, if you like that kind of dobro slide sound you might also want to check out Jerry Douglas in case you don't know him. The best guitar for that kind of slide playing (lapsteel style) is the Weissenborn. Check out on youtube 'Alison Krauss Union Station - Faraway Land' or 'Alison Krauss Union Station - Man of Constant Sorrow' from a live DVD from 2002
@MattyQStudios there's a yahoo group for bruce (can't think of its name at the moment) where they share chords with each other and that sort of thing. you can try that.
Unbelievable! I first fell in love with Bruce's music back in 1995- when I heard THIS song from the album "Nothing But a Burning Light." As silly as this may sound, his music inspired me through that difficult time in my life, through finishing college, etc. I don't know what it is about him, but to me he is the greatest, most passionate of all time!
bruce is without question one of the most influencial singer songwriters of our day. this song may be a cover but it just shows how cool he is as a player and singer. fantastic stuff..."ain't nothing but a burning light"
This clip appears to be from an Asian country's rebroadcast of the 1990-1993 US TV program "American Music Shop." I taped it on VHS when it was on, so I have his whole set. The house band is Jerry Douglas (dobro), Harry Stinson (drums, harmony vocal) and Glen Worf (bass). Not appearing in this clip are Mark O'Connor (violin) and Matt Rollings (piano). Thanks for posting it. IMHO, this is a better version than on Bruce's album.
Great song. Burning Light is probably my fav BC album. Call it Democracy a very close second..hmm maybe stealing fire. Whatever.. I love this song. And yeah I agree a lot of people are influenced by BC though he is not mainstream. One cool thing is he's quoted by U2 on Rattle and Hum. Bono sings: "I heard a singer on the radio late last night Says he's gonna kick the darkness till it bleeds daylight" That line is from Lovers in a Dangerous Time.
It takes some money and patience to listen to the entire catalogue of Bruce's albums, but if you have ever picked up a guitar it is worth the financial investment and the investment of time to get to know his music. He can be annoyingly into causes and cynically poetic - but his overall impact on singer/songwriter music can't be underestimated. Look at the artists who list him as an influence.
I wouldn't call him a giant in the music business. He and his loyal small record True North have a very faithful following of fans, but it is not like a band's usual relationship with someone like Sony. Bruce has artistic freedom and has hand in hand helped keep small True North afloat as its major artist.
I hate "the music business". But I look at it this way, I know Bruce Cockburn has played more than once with Eric Clapton (among other greats), and I know Eric Clapton doesn't play with just anybody.
@CerebralGump Clapton was asked once 'how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in t he world' and Eric Clapton said, "I don't know. Ask Bruce Cockburn."
A great song. Blind Willy was a great man... his song lives on!
