  • I always thought Black Betty was referring to Bettie Page, but I guess it isn't if it was written/played in the forties. I always think of Bettie Page when I hear it though.

    :)

  • Guys. A Black Betty refers to a musket with a black painted stock whose 'child' was a musket with a plain walnut handle called a 'Brown Bess'. It was also the name for a whip, or a vehicle that took people to prison. The earliest use in the 1800s was for a whiskey bottle. Lead Belly's recording was based on an 18th century marching song about, you guessed it, muskets. I'm pretty sure it's never been used to describe a PERSON, though I could be wrong.

  • @englishtealeaf uh black betty had a child'''''''vehicles dont have children

  • African American Betty? Oh wait...that's too nationalist.. Betty can be Mexican, Indian, or hell Chinese too... so lets all settle down and sing along to Ethnically Neutral Betty..

  • i much prefer this version

  • I think the song would have been better sang in his theatrical voice better, tho trying to expand on the listeners this way helps....BTW, I have a black lab named "betty"

  • After a song is 25 years old anyone can cover it without permission or paying for the rights.

  • @jmakinwaves The song was first recorded in 1933 by convict James Baker (also known as Iron Head) at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas (a State prison farm). It was recorded commercially in New York in 1939 for the Musicraft label by Lead Belly also a convict. The song was around before them. No one knows who actually wrote it.

  • @fffreddie ...I have lived my whole life in La. and Texas and you are correct...Some other info is that a black betty was a musket used in the Civil War.....Who knows but "RAM JAM" nailed it for us rockers...not MeatLoaf....

  • didn't believe ram jam's 1977 release could be improved upon. t/y meat 4 proving me wrong!!

  • I really dont think this is the right video because he is singing and nothing is coming out??? And is there piano in this song?

  • if this song doesn't get you pulse, heart, mind, body, and soul racing then you just don't desevre to listen to rock.

  • I WANNA ROCK !!!

  • he steals another persons song

  • @snsnn1234 shut the fuck up... its not stealing... its covering... fuck you

  • @snsnn1234 Stealing implies he took the song and claimed it as his own, witch Meat Loaf did not do. He covered the song, meaning he had to ask the owners of the original song(namely the record company) if it was ok to sing. If he had played without that permission then he could be sued.

  • that's right bo666dom...Eve was our mother and she was not white....she was black!

  • This being a Meat Loaf song, I expected the full Jim Steinman treatment: 13 minutes long, choir, piano solo, duet with a girl at the 7:00 mark, etc. This one's pretty cool, though.

  • Guess some of you have never heard of genetics? We're all from Africa.

That's right. Quite shocking, isn't it?

When you're done gasping for air, lean back, relax, and just enjoy the song.

  • Maybe it's just a song about a really hot, fat black girl. THat made some dude horny, that's not racist! That's good ol' country lovin'~1

  • WHAT IS THIS SHIT? I DIDN'T KNOW MEATLOAF SANG.. LOLLOLOLOLOLOL

  • @AmethystRants Someday they'll say that about Sting, David Bowie, Ludicrous, and every other singer that acts or acted, sad isn't it.

  • I've got to say, this is a kick-ass cover of this song.

  • Black Betty was a dessert that my grandma used to make out of apples and brown sugar. There's nothing racist about it.

Oh wait, that was Brown Betty. Never mind.

  • @billzee123 thats funny right there

  • Best version out there.

  • ram jam

  • Better with age?! He got paid 400K to sing at the Aussie Rules Grandfinal and choked. Sounded so shit and everyone was hating it haha. Shame. I dont mind the old Loaf, but he is passed his time.

  • Meat Loaf is the father of heavy rock n roll, and hes one of those guys who gets better with age, Rock on Mr. Loaf

  • They stole Leadbelly's song, made it way worse, and still are more popular than Leadbelly. Sense? This makes none.

  • Best Version Yet!!!

  • Comment removed

  • LMAO Chris Farley LIVES

  • reel!

  • Who cares, Just rock out!

  • some people are just too damn sensitive and could fuck up a wet dream. get a life already, quit whining.

  • The Fatman can sing balls to the wall !

  • I love all meatloafs music videos cause they all tell a story i like an ALice Cooper concert its all art n like play. The videos of meatloafs not his concerts. But this is real good cover too

  • Love most of the versions of this song from the original with Leadbelly, to Ram Jam, to Spiderbait, and onward. Makes me want to ride a muscle car a desert highway at top speed while doing air drumming. XD

  • Black Betty is an old blues/chain gang song, which refers to the bull whip wielded by the boss. Early versions of the song can be heard on old Leadbelly records.

  • Hmm well according to Lead belly it was the name of the whip called "black betty" it was a slave song sung with a lead singer and the workers chiming in. I am not sure who is right or wrong and don't much care its a cool song either way., like the way Ram Jam covered it.

  • Good job ;o impressed

  • Wow this is a good version of BB

  • all yall wrong...black betty was a whore with a crazy child looking for that child daddy..bam a lam !!!!!!!!!!

  • Black Berry!!

  • Thanks for the history lesson on Black Betty. I love Leadbelly, and always loved this song by RamJam.

  • not sure about a gun, car or whatever...but black belly originally was written and performed by Leadbelly...a BLACK blues artist...you;ll have to ask him about the real meaning. Either way, everyone is way to sensitive to word black.

  • Look my fellow white guys, they're on to us, they finally found out about our secret plans to make all black folks miserable. We might as well come out in the open, the next world wide meeting of white people to decide how we can f--k black people over has been changed from Thursday to next Tuesday. The topic on conversation this week will be how to offend black people by writing songs with the word black in the title.

  • @quacksacker Holy crap...don't watch Black Magic Woman!!! Racist.

  • @quacksacker Blacks use their endless GUILT and complaining to get everything given to them for free.

  • @quacksacker um, this song was sung in the 40's by leadbelly. i doubt that a white person wrote, but maybe so.

  • actually if you listen to the words , the song is actually talking about "whiskey" not a musket, or a slave. this can be better heard listening to the orginal Ram jam

  • @slydogg4 the original tune was not ram jam's. The original ROCK version was ram jams, but the lyrics are not.

  • as far as I know Black Betty is the name of the prison car in the 1910-1920s. First of all it was painted black and secondly it transported black prisoners and bam-ba-lam is the sound of the heavy metal doors on the car. That's what I've found. :D

  • @Tale077 And, you're wrong.

  • The term 'racist' or 'racism' is a term that is used against white people. You never hear about a racist black person, or a racist muslim, or a racist mexican. You almost never hear about the atrocities that the other nationalities commit because the media is afraid of being labeled racist. I liked this song since the time that Ram Jam covered it. No, I am not racist. I just like certain types of music.

  • I don't know who that woman is at :15 but omg I am in love.

  • Meatloaf: The Reverand of Rock

  • @AGuyInAHat Apparently, Meatloaf is not the king of spelling either.

  • Well, considering this song was originally performed (and credited...) to AFRICAN AMERICAN BLUESMAN LEADBELLY, I hardly see how it's racist towards black folks.

  • WOWOH BLACK BERRY BAMBALAM!

  • This is the best cover I've heard of Black Betty.

  • Great song and video

  • is black pudding racist? hmm, there's a thought to the mindless heap of idiots who cry racism at everything without using brain cells. This song isn't even about a woman lol Just enjoy the music! It's a great song! So, take a chill pill folks.

  • I'm willing to bet that anyone who posted on this video crying "RACISM!" is not black. You all got trolled. Congratulations!

  • his name was robert paulson

  • Suck my white willy! :P

  • Wow...if "Black" people think "Black" Betty is racist...don't go to school..soonor or later your going to learn about the Plague of London...aka: The Black Death...and no..The Black Death did not kill just black people it killed people affected...including White, Black, Yellow, Grey, Purple, Pink, raindow or any other type of color skin.Anyway you go...just because it says "Black Betty" doesn't mean its racist...if you think it is racist then 10/10 your racist and you want something to bitch at.

  • @TheCandyMan7665 the song is about a Leadbelly's favorite car

  • @TheSethIkrass I know that...tell that to the ppl that think this is racist...me myself just loves the music...xD

  • Does anyone know the film that the clips are being shown?

  • Black Betty ::: 18th century maching cadence .....Black Betty was a.Flint lock Musket with a black painted stock ....Bam -ba-lam referring to the sound it made ..what is so racist about a riffle they called a black betty back in the 18th century ??? nothin i can see ....Some people need to start reading more and looking up stuff on the internet before they type stupid stuff and get people upset over it

  • @scuba369me

    great research man :)

  • @scuba369me Yep. Black Betty came to mean a lot of things, but the first reference was a nickname for a rifle with a stock made from black walnut. During the revolutionary war, it was considered a rich man's weapon, which an inexperienced shooter would think would make him more accurate. The poor country guys who spent their lives hunting made do with whatever was to hand, so they likely made up the cadence to poke fun at the guys who spent fortunes on a gun they didn't know how to shoot.

  • @scuba369me Really? I thought Black Betty was a car! :P

  • first off if sum1 really reads that much into music, then they SHOULD stop listening to everything. except RAP that says what niggas, nigge*s and things like that right -- dare say this song is racist when i hear that in r&b songs blacks callin blacks that.. HA! HOW SAD are you. There is ALOT more to worry about in the world-- then the damn lyrics in songs from the 1980's+ how about news today-- NO jobs in america, NO FUNDING for health care for anyone WHITE or BLACK.?

  • @scuba369me Black Betty is not another Frankie, nor yet a two-timing woman that a man can moan his blues about. She is the whip that was and is used in some Southern prisons. A convict on the/ Darrington State Farm in Texas, where, by the way, whipping has been practically discontinued, laughed at Black Betty and mimicked her conversation in the following song, used almost exclusively on african american prisoners

  • @scuba369me so what is this gun's child? the gattling gun? thats a pretty wild gun

  • @scuba369me You're wrong; it's never too wise to believe all you read on Wiki. Though I'd be interested to read your explanation for the following lines:

She said "I'm worrin' outta my mind"

    The damn thing gone blind

    and:

    She's from birmingham

    Way down in alabam'

    Well' shes shakin' that thing

    Boy she makes me sing

That said it you're right when you say it isn't racist and those who say it is need to get over themselves. It's just that using a wrong argument never helps.

  • @scuba369me i thought it was a drug

  • @scuba369me Amen, Ignorance is bliss. An accuse for people to act like an ass.

  • @scuba369me Black betty is also the name of an alcoholic drink.

  • leadbelly

  • Written and recorded by Huddie Leadbetter, better know as the legendary,Leadbelly.

early blues singer, songwriter and twelve string gutarist.

  • Great job by Meat Loaf

  • here is the origin of this song

    " Black Betty " byLEADBELLY = = = = = = = = = The " RED HOT BLUES " (1925-1945) Texas

  • ok, he's butchering this song a weeee bit!! yikes!!! from "Ram Jam"'s .

  • or black betty can be heroin

  • I <3 Meatloaf.

  • I enjoy Meat Loaf's version of this song (and loved it when I heard him sing it live!). This video could try a little harder, though.

  • I hate how i go to type "black betty" in and as soon as i get to type black the song black and yellow pops up. Bullshit.

  • The song by Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter, is a paeion to an exciting incident he imagined with a lady he happened to see. Oddly, his steamy version is a lot sexier than this excellent hard-driving version by ML. But, to be truthful, Lead Belly's version is mostly foreplay, while ML's version is all climax. I'm just sayin'.

  • You know whats racist always acting like a victim because of your race, oh its because im white or black, gtfo of this song with race and just listen to good music

  • @spiderjocky12 I bet you're a fucking welfare nigger.

  • @MitchGehle im fucking 15 year old white male, and fuck you, why the fuck would you think im a black person with welfare, dumb ass prick

  • Sweet cover, and in no way a racist song...

  • i named by switch blade black betty :3 hooray for stilletos!

  • Rock n Roll.

  • Holy fuck this is awesome. I had no idea ML had a cover of... a cover of Black Betty.

  • it be the long land pattern Brown Bess the son being the indian patern :)

  • Rock On. Thanks Leadbelly.

She had a child, child gone wild.

She gets me high, thats no lie.

    So rock steady, always ready.

    BAM A LAM oh yeah!

  • Black Betty was first recorded by Huddy Leadbetter, better known as Leadbelly about 1928.All other versions are therefor covers. Helps to find out the songs history before you comment.

  • are you fucking serious?? stop these arguments about racism and listen to the rock.

  • This song could be able some black slave chick and I wouldnt give a rat's ass. This song especially with meatloaf singing, is to fucking awesome to be worrying about it being racist.

  • Not everything with black in it is racist.

  • this song is awesome nothing to do with racism but alot to do with proper singing and real plexi tone...................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...and btw ...if black betty had a nice brazilian round derriere i wouldn't nind kissing her..anywhere!

  • if you listen this song isn't anything but exalting Black Betty. It holds up the woman Black Betty as a sexy woman. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to actually listen to Leadbelly's version, and when he sings you can feel the longing he has for Black Betty.

  • @gem12ification you on crack, listen to the song

  • @gem12ification ppl like you are the ones that bring everyone down.

  • @gem12ification You make me giggle.

  • @gem12ification Bullshit

  • @gem12ification Fucking moron!

  • OKAY who is the real starter of black betty dammit!

  • @gammogun "Huddy William Ledbetter" Or maybe better known as "Lead Belly"

  • I used to assume they meant black like African-American, but the video seems to mean it more like "sinister". I guess it's good to keep an open mind.

  • he is not singing he is just singing a another song

  • that cover and Spider Bait cover of Black Betty not worse than original ^^

  • They murdered this song...

  • Meatloaf...<3

  • oh white betty

  • 193 retards view this video... Oh and Youtube, you SUCK!!!

  • The song was originally written and performed by blues legend Leadbelly. Do yourself a favor and look him up. I actually like Tom Jones version. Not racist a real tribute to a great blues number......

  • Could Black Betty simply be a hot female named Betty who wears black leather and of whom is always ready? That was the first idea that went through my head when I heard the original version some 30 years ago by Ram Jam. (I was an adolescent at the time, so it figures that this was where my head was at.)

  • @HeavensDemon966 It isnt about a woman named Betty, black or otherwise. Black Betty in this regard is a type of gun (A flintlock musket.).

  • Think this version and SpiderBaits are the best out there!!

  • Nice job with an old standard.

  • MEATLOAF ITS WHATS FOR DINNAH SUNNNNNNNNN GET YOU A PULL OFF THIS.

  • Awesome version of a classic tune............

  • If you think this song is racist you are one of earths dumbest first you're sitting in front of a computer look it up asshole second other than the word "black" the isn't a single racist word in the whole damn song and last time i checked black was not a racist term politically inncorrect maybe but not racist not to mention the goddamn song was written by a BLACK man you retards. So heres an idea stfu u stupid motherfuckers! learn first then open mouth

PS I looked it up while typing this DUH!!

  • @TheAcesNeights yes u r right brother

  • @earlfishbigwater Lol i know right if only there were this place where you could look up info for free and have all of it at your fingertips and at a moments notice oh well til then guess we'll just have to use the internet and go off instinct

  • @TheAcesNeights

And it's also about a musket (gun) that had the nickname Black Betty

  • @asdass1992 Ya i know i have post on the Lead Belly version that explains all the possible meanings for the term Black Betty. Believe it or not they were having the racist argument on a vid sang by a black guy (the original artist as it is), people are dumb on a stagering level. It's impressive society has made it this far.

  • @TheAcesNeights also did you know the song was written about a dog?

  • @TheAcesNeights I find it funny people think this is a racist song while Black Betty refers to objects lol :P

  • @Alexander31071990 ya I know it's to bad people can't just enjoy the damn song without trying to twist things to fit their skewed world perspective

  • @TheAcesNeights

Well said! Especially the fact that this song is actually about a gun. Or a bottle of whisky. Or a whip. Depends which source you look up :)

  • @TheAcesNeights omg i forgot he redid this song.. GREAT VERSION MEAT LOAF!!!

  • @TheAcesNeights Betty could also be Black Irish. :-P

  • @TheAcesNeights Amen!

  • @TheAcesNeights led belly wrote it

  • @TheAcesNeights win.

  • @TheAcesNeights It was written by black people lol, so of course it's not racist.

  • Never knew Meatloaf was a band. thought it was just a TV personality asshole. i do have to say, they did the best cover of anyone. not as good as the original though.

  • @43labontepetty Meat Loaf (Two words, note that) is not a band, he is an individual singer. His band that tours with him is called the Neverland Express.

And it is an intriguing cover of a classic. Seems to of racked up a fair few views here in YT!

  • What an awesome cover, it just shows the amount of talent Meatloaf has :)

  • Father Meatloaf, this is awesome.

  • So, by the logic of some twats here, we should stop calling black cats black, because is racist?

    MEATLOAF RULES!

  • black betty could have been three things.... -_- now listen up children

    1. A gun (18th century flint lock guess what they called it) bam-ba-lam

    2. A whip (prison guards used to carry black whips around)

    3. Liquor bottle(Benjamin Franklin wrote that he kissed Black Betty)

There you have it plain and simple the meanings of Black Betty

  • @epicjizzinmypants

guns whips and booze....please it's just a song by leadbelly bout

a hottie..left out the whoo's and bam-a-lams Black betty had a child ,The damn thing gone wild

She said "I'm worrin' outta my mind" ,The damn thing gone blind

She really gets me high ,You know that's no lie

She's so rock steady ,She's always ready

She's from birmingham ,Way down in alabam'

Well' shes shakin' that thing ,Boy she makes me sing

    Whoa, black betty fellow earthling

  • @epicjizzinmypants How did any of those have a child?

  • @epicjizzinmypants It is MOST likely one other possibility -- Black Betty also referred to the wagon that delivered the new convicts to the penitentiary.

  • @epicjizzinmypants

i could be mistaken but i believe black betty was probably the name of the woman leadbelly was describing but i see now how its possible that a gun, a whip, or liquor bottle could have a baby... dumbass -_-

  • @12adamzain Black betty was an escaped fugitive, who turned prostitute. Black betty was likely a nickname that she had gotten while she was in prison.

  • @epicjizzinmypants or it could be just a black chick named betty

  • @epicjizzinmypants its the 3rd one, its most commonly accepted that the song lyrics are about a liquor bottle

  • @epicjizzinmypants what about a black woman that had a child that the damn thing went blind?

  • @epicjizzinmypants black betty is also a footlong mammoth dildo capable of extreme damage to clitoral regions. Always make sure that when inserting the 5 inch diameter dildo into your vagina or rectum to be well lubricated as well as a dirty ass whore.

  • @epicjizzinmypants Sure, but "Black Betty had a child."

  • @ProfanityKing the child of liquer was all night love

  • @paintballalcopone Consequences indeed. I can see that.

  • Its hardly racist, if theres 10 bettys in a room and ones black what else do you call her lol

  • how is this supposed to be racist why dont i get it?
