@TheBalnat man kann beides sagen. im gesprochenen englisch ist es aber eher unüblich, "was" zu verwenden, weswegen meist auf "were" zurückgegriffen wird. vielleicht soll das, rein grammatikalisch korrektere "was" hier aber auch den poetisch-melancholischen inhalt des liedes unterstreichen.
