  • this is the sickest song ever written! No outlaw-country, or even black metal can compare to this shit!! I raise my fifth of whiskey to this shit!!

  • I really don't think this is "original footage"... looks like someone filmed someone/themselves lip-syncing and playing a guitar, and ran it through a couple of old-timey filters in Windows Movie Maker.

  • Harry McClintock is singing this though his was not the first version that I ever heard. I was 12 years old and ill and bored from being in bed. My older brother listened to folk music and lent me his Cisco Houston album with this song on it. That was 50 years ago. I still love the song.

  • I woke up singing this song today, haha, I had to find it and listen to it because I could only remember one part of it and it's was bugging the hell out of me that I couldn't remember the rest of it,

  • Awesome!

  • Glad you all like the song I wrote.

  • @likearollingstone257 The person who wrote this died in 1957

  • @bizzaro42 Obviously not since I'm right here talking to you on this website.

  • @likearollingstone257 Everyone knows you didn't write this song.

  • @likearollingstone257 fuckin retard

  • i dont remember this song at all but something about the tune just rings a bell. makes me fell sorry for all the small kids who dont apreciate songs like this who only listen to new age bull shit and the little beaners listen to shitty new age rap. I dont want to live in this time period anymore

  • @jkgunsword44 man i like rap, and this stuff.

  • I love it, my dad would sing it to me when I was a kid and I was sad, it would always calm me down. Good times.

  • This song rocks (candy rocks)

  • Oh I miss wen I was in 3rd grade we used to sing this

  • Is that actually Harry McClintock

  • love it !!!!!

  • @victorbarovsky

    I think it's spelled "invented"

  • "Not another slideshow", my ass. Whatever you call it, it's obviously contemporary footage, with some cheap filter on it to give it the grainy look.

    You sir, are a fool.

  • @forslavjo I'd like to see you explain 0:34 if this is just a "cheap filter".

  • was this shot on the new gopro?

  • This is just the recording from "Oh brother, where art thou."

  • @singsinnavy lmao, this recording was made in 1928, that's 72 years before the movie in case your knowledge of math is equally limited.

  • @pumkinvine thats mean.

  • @singsinnavy You're both right. The song recorded in 1928 was used in the movie.

  • "Where they hung the jerk that invited work" has to be the best lyric ever

  • @victorbarovsky

I always thought it was "where they hung the jerk that invented work" have just listened again, check it out!, and I agree, the best lyric ever :=)

  • @judiemac1 It IS "invented." :)

  • My grandpa always used to sing this song. <3

  • This is the best song ever.

  • i want to be a hobo now

  • fucking ads

  • so chill

  • Hang those jerks who invented works. YEAAA!

  • ...I wanna be at the Big Rock Candy Mountian ... ;)

  • I feel so incredibly nostalgic...this song feels so familiar. I'm also kinda tearing up a bit, as if someone I loved sang this to me long ago when I was a kid...

  • he'll see us all in the fall cause in winter, we wouldve otherwise been dead, cause of the cold, and the hoboness and all

  • @TheOlpaddywalsh LMAO!! XD

  • When he first wrote the song it was very graphic as to what happened to kids lured into the life. In '28 (I think) he revised it to get it out. You still feel the how the unemployed sung about a world with out the terrible oppression they suffered.

We'll have to fight for the Big Rock....

  • The meadow is on fire.

  • This is the song i want played at my funeral :)

  • I hope heaven is like The Rock Candy Mountains

  • Childhood memories anybody?

  • if dont like something this peaceful go fuck yourself

  • I used sing this with my dad :)

  • "All the cops have wooden legs" "Prisons are made of tin" "Handouts grow on bushes" "Boxcars are all empty" "The Railroad Bulls are blind"

Damn my AP US history education! I can't help but recognize those refrances!

  • @14jtd994 lol, words of wisdom from someone who is obviously a mental giant.

  • @bottomlands u dont no much about audio and video do u its the same off the record and just played over it

    stupid people

  • @14jtd994 Yes, I know it's overdubbed genius, I just think it's comical that someone who can't spell "you" or use punctuation is calling people stupid.

  • all the people whom dislikes this song is crazy

  • This song is just so sweet, it just makes humble lovely joy bubble up inside you like candy floss... yeah...

  • i heard woody guthrie would not sing this song cause it was about a homosexual luring young boys away from the other hobos?

  • @madmanmillett last verse...The punk rolled up his big blue eyes

And said to the jocker, “Sandy,

I’ve hiked and hiked and wandered too,

But I ain’t seen any candy.

I’ve hiked and hiked till my feet are sore

And I’ll be damned if I hike any more

To be buggered sore like a hobo’s whore

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.”

  • @madmanmillett I doubt that, but kinda interesting. If Woody wouldn't sing it, well, then I guess I won't hahaha.

  • @MrBuk86 read what is under my post by lost buffalo he seems to have the lyrics

  • Check out the Tex Ritter version, same great tune, child appropriate lyrics...

  • @jackstraw316 screw child appropriate stuff this is the good stuff!

  • @XxInferiorRacoonxX,

These are the mostly child appropriate lyrics. The original version from the late 1800s wasn't publicly recorded and some of its lyrics aren't pg, but the song is actually kind of sad. He finally realizes that there isn't a rock candy mountain where one is successful without working and his life has been a hedonistic failure.

  • what happened to real music like this

  • im 11 too

  • my favorite song ever

  • @TheRebornMama thats sick!!!

yeah i cover this song its a big infulence for my music

  • @RatFaceJohnny there was a group of us about 10 punks listening to this from OC we were all between 14-18 sleeping under a bridge...kids listen to this but theyre scared to cause of whats peers might say

  • @TMChaoSSoniC what really? dude ppl cant trip about that. i listen 2 all kinds of stuff, punk psychobilly rockabilly, ska, hardcore, indie, folk, but not rap crap haha. but this song is sick, dont worry about what others think about you,

  • @RatFaceJohnny rap is good

  • @RatFaceJohnny yeah man...one of my buddies is 24 and is living under a bridge still...life gets no better than what this song talks about but society calls this lifestyle being a bum. The first man on earth couldnt have been no better though right?

  • @TMChaoSSoniC well i believe that even thoguh ur bud is living under a bridge , life can still get better. being a bum isnt a fun life, but he can change that! i believe adam was the first cat on the earth, he was perfect until he messed up. your friend still has a chance to change his life. through God

  • @RatFaceJohnny YES I LOVE THIS SONG AND IM 13

  • @PensandSteelersrock haha good job kid. spread the good music 2 others

  • @RatFaceJohnny 19 and I'm totally into this shit. Love it!

  • @metalupyourthrash HAHA ALRIGHT DUDE

WE NEED MORE KIDS LIKE YOU 2 LOVE IT!!!

  • @RatFaceJohnny The song is not 'sick'. It is a beautiful masterpiece. Words have meanings !!!

  • @jhofmann33 I think he meant 'sick' as in 'awesome' and 'kool.......just say'n.

  • @Zaphod4100 Thank you for the kind explanation. At the age of 48, I miss the days when words had old Webster dictionary meanings.

  • @RatFaceJohnny me and my buddies are 17-18 and we jam on this all the time

  • I had no idea this song only had one chord in it

  • @rolyat1216 yeah, but it kinda grows on yu.... the pet rock only had a rock in a box...

  • @rolyat1216 It has three.

  • @rolyat1216 it more than one chord

  • Jesus for President of Rock Candy Mountain!

  • @tennisboi107, no i left his pot smoking ass after he hit me and our daughter so fuck off.. you dick

  • Do you think you could post the lyrics please?

  • It's amazing how much video has advanced, especially for a good song that has lasted this long.

  • 14 people were lost in the maze of the big rock candy mountain!

  • Comment removed

  • i've been reading a book called milkweed and a man shouts "come on kids let's go to candy mountain!" i looked it up on wikipedia and it only had info about this song are they related in anyway?

  • my ex husband loved this song, my only favorite part is the whiskey parts..

  • @copenhagenbitch20 no wonder he left you

  • every time i'm working with my brother in-law or when were fishing or road trpping i sing this song ,and we crack up laughing :) love it

  • it maybe easy now to point at those men who had to rode the rails in the dirty 30s

as low life, worthless ,just trash but have you ever thought of where those men

were when the second war was fought?

  • @filmerado LOL, this video has over 200,000 views and your videos have, oh wait you don't have any. Who's lame?

  • I listened to this song a lot as a kid. Now that I'm older, with a less mature sense of humor, I understand the references and think to myself about how much this implies a drug addict.. that's just the vibe I'm getting.

  • this is a great song

  • it's "hung the turk that invented work", people...

  • I wanna be there.

  • they need a love button for a song like this

  • This great song is a quasi "Over the Rainbow" tune for hillbillies. A fantasy tale where "all the cops have wooden legs," dogs possess rubber teeth, and "the railroad bulls are blind," make this ditty a true hoot. You'll note that when this song is used in "O'Brother Where Art Thou," a violin is added delightfully near the halfway point.

  • @neatoauctions it's about hobos, drifters, not necessarily hillbillies. "handouts" are what panhandlers get, they sleep in boxcars, etc.

  • same chord all trouhg the song?? watch the hand...

  • Thank you for sharing such a wonderful part of our music history. This is where it used to be sung, on the front porch, in the back yard and on the range. LOVE IT, THANKS!!!

  • if you listen to the lyrics, this is kinda like a 30's Gangsta's Paradise. haha

  • original verse stated "where they hung the Turk that invented work"

  • flapjack thanks for bringing this up!

  • i thought they hung the TURK that invented work?

  • i have to sing this in chores

  • awesome song... though tabacco really does grow on trees, and ganja too! no need to cry about that/

  • @thectexperience Cigarette Trees are not tobacco, it's the way they look.
