This result really was a shock given that hardly anyone in the USA played football at that time. Even to this day, most Americans I talk to know little or nothing about it. Other sports are too big out there and the marketing people will keep it that way.

I was reading up on world cup history, and the USA was one of the first original 13 teams to make it in the first world cup ever back in 1930, they would be the first team to win 3rd place. Can you believe that. The USA going in for the first world cup and won 3rd place. I guess it makes sense since most of them were English and Scottish immigrants lol. I'm not saying USA sucks. They have a VERY good team, and every world cup I see of them, they are getting much better. Hope they win one day...

However, I believe a few European teams are definitely necessary in the World Cup. Italy and Germany are powerhouses. And to remove England, as rivaled as they are to us, are a highly-respectable and irremovable team.

We are good, you have to be good to make the world cup, don't be suprised if the US wins in south africa world cup this year.

That isnt the case with the mens team and it has never been registered in the official FIFA site or any other including here on youtube. Once in a friendly match played in 1999 (3-0) and the other time in confederation cup in Mexico also in 1999 (2-0). On both of these games Germany was lacking their stars. Overall these two teams have met 9 times in major tournaments & friendly games and Germany leads the series 7-2. Sorry these are just the facts.
England has all the advantages in Group C and are of course expecting to go really far this wc. The pressure is all on England for this first match. If the US somehow pulls off a win or a tie, it will amount to an English national sports tragedy and there will be a subsequent meltdown after that game. If the US loses, Americans wont even notice. American football apathy has always played to their advantage in the World Cup.

ultralight....I am a USA fan too. I'm not trying to nitpick here but the USA are not playing the British at the World Cup this summer. The USA are playing the English. England does not = Britain. Britain is made up for 3 nations (Scotland, England, Wales) and each are distinctly seperate from each other. There is no British soccer team. I just wanted to clarify not...not trying to give you a hard time as most people think England and Britain is the same thing but it is not.
you have to be carfeful because when you say British you are also including Scottish and Welsh people and most Scots and Welsh will be rooting for the USA when they play England. Not all, but most.

I was reading up on world cup history, and the USA was one of the first original 13 teams to make it in the first world cup ever back in 1930, they would be the first team to win 3rd place. Can you believe that. The USA going in for the first world cup and won 3rd place. I guess it makes sense since most of them were English and Scottish immigrants lol. I'm not saying USA sucks. They have a VERY good team, and every world cup I see of them, they are getting much better. Hope they win one day...

@InProgWeTrust what about the Confederations Cup? Not necessarily on European soil, but a FIFA-run tourney. The United States defeated the "#1 team", Spain, to reach the final with yet another non-European country, Brazil.
However, I believe a few European teams are definitely necessary in the World Cup. Italy and Germany are powerhouses. And to remove England, as rivaled as they are to us, are a highly-respectable and irremovable team.

This was the greatest upset in world cup history. USA is the champions of women's soccer. We did pretty well in the South Africa tournament, we beat Spain who was number 1 and we played with Brazil. We are good, you have to be good to make the world cup, don't be suprised if the US wins in south africa world cup this year.

I would say 50% of the teams in that world cup should beat America, if America won the world cup fair enough, but holy shit that would be the biggest upset in world football history ;)

Hey, we beat Spain 2-0 and they were number 1 a couple years ago and they had a 37 game winning streak. Well we'll see as far as the soccer match goes between USA and England on June 12. We aren't the favorite I just hope we put some what of a good showing . Yeah England is a favorite so is the Netherlands eventhough it says Nederland LOL, Argentina, Brazil are other favorites.

That isnt the case with the mens team and it has never been registered in the official FIFA site or any other including here on youtube. I have kept close tabs on all international friendly games & I havent come across that game as u claim. You are def wrong on that unless u come up with a link of some sort. Germany hasnt lost that bad in ages.

@Victory1981 I havent heard about that one either. US has beaten Germany TWICE only. Once in a friendly match played in 1999 (3-0) and the other time in confederation cup in Mexico also in 1999 (2-0). On both of these games Germany was lacking their stars. Overall these two teams have met 9 times in major tournaments & friendly games and Germany leads the series 7-2. Sorry these are just the facts.

England has all the advantages in Group C and are of course expecting to go really far this wc. The pressure is all on England for this first match. If the US somehow pulls off a win or a tie, it will amount to an English national sports tragedy and there will be a subsequent meltdown after that game. If the US loses, Americans wont even notice. American football apathy has always played to their advantage in the World Cup.

I was always confused why the UK is one nation in the Olympics but four in the World Cup...then again, the US has Puerto Rico as a separate country in the Olympics...all confusing. ultralight....I am a USA fan too. I'm not trying to nitpick here but the USA are not playing the British at the World Cup this summer. The USA are playing the English. England does not = Britain. Britain is made up for 3 nations (Scotland, England, Wales) and each are distinctly seperate from each other. There is no British soccer team. I just wanted to clarify not...not trying to give you a hard time as most people think England and Britain is the same thing but it is not.

I'm not ignorant, England is much better than we are but they don't scare me as a soccer fan.
