Me gusta mucho esta voz .Mi piace molto este voce What a splendid voice. J'adore cette voix extraordinaire...comme j'adore Juan Diego Florez. Le talent de l'un ne peut nuire à celui de l'autre. Chacun a sa place dans le firmament, pour notre plus grand bonheur!
Well yes, he has great technique and I like the way he does Rossini--however, does noone hear the slight tremor in his voice? I find it very distracting. And its there in all his notes, whether high or low. A slight defect, but despite this, 'tis still a very nice voice.
You can't compare mr Brownlee and mr Blake, they have great technique both. I find that Blake has a personal technique while Brownlee a more traditional one, anyway they're both great !
It doesn't matter. He WILL be the next generation of great tenors. If you can't hear this man's instrument and years of perfecting technicality and still find silly flaws, I would expect you to find fault with Jesus as well. Pavarotti was good and so is Brownlee. I get tired of people finding fault in wonderful opera singers, who don't know how much hard work it entails. When you spend thousands of dollars on schooling and coachings to perfect what he does to keep opera alive, then talk.
I could not agree more, every tenor had some shortcoming. So he has a very slight tremor the warmth of the sound is just impossible to deny and I'm so glad he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
@cardangel16 training to sing classical music is extremely expensive. This isn't pop music. Only a person who really knows the genre and TRULY appreciate it would know that. Just like a classical pianist, a vocalist has to do the same.
you seem to know very little of vocal talent or technique. even if you could compare these 2 voices which you cant because brownlee's voice is microscopic in comparison to pavarotti's and they sing completely different repertoir. the only tenor in the last century to even compare to pavarotti's technique was jussi bjorling. whom you could compare. but jussi's voice was a bit less beautiful, leaving pavarotti on top in all aspects imo. brownlee is however a top notch rossini tenor one of the best
Its like comparing apples and oranges jst2k09. Mr Brownlee is a Lirico-Leggiero tenor. Pavarotti was a Lyric tenor who possessed the agility to do some of the Leggiero repertoire earlier on in his career. So I really don't get your point. There are plenty of singers today and in the past as good as or better than Brownlee, both in terms of talent and certainly in terms of their legacy to opera.
Pavarotti was one of the legends of the last century. That's unquestionable. Still, I think it's far-fetched to suggest that Brownlee's gifts are not at all unique today. Very few tenors within the last century possess both the incredible agility and the mellifluous tone Brownlee commands. Brownlee has more in common with John McCormark and Joseph Schmidt than he does with most tenors alive.
As another Anderson University alumn, let me say it is quite an honor to listen to your talent, good sir! I worked with the same voice teacher, and I know he gave you a great foundation! GREAT WORK!!! I hope to see you live some day!
No comparison because they have different types of voices. Pavarotti could never sing Almaviva or the Prince in Cenerentola, and I have a hard time imagining Brownlee singing some of the Pavarotti repertoire.
No comparison because of the length of career, body of recordings, international experience, it makes no sense to compare an albeit great but emerging artist with the most noted tenor in the past 50 years.
Larry is a great performer. I love to hear him sing. We grew up together in Church. I had the priviledge to hear him sing almost every Sunday and the more he and his family sang the more requests they would get to sing. His father and mother and siblings were the top singers of Phillps Chapel C.O.G.I.C.
I've seen Brownlee 2X: 1st, in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA at the San Diego Opera, and 2nd, in LA CENERENTOLA at the Houston Grand Opera. When he sang this aria in San Diego, the audience erupted insanely with applause. At the end of his big aria in Houston, he ran across the stage, holding a ringing high C. Indeed it was incredible: the high level of artistry, the gorgeous tone quality, the Italianate diction, the acting, etc. He's also quite affable. I talked to him backstage for ~1 hour. :)
great voice....can someone explain why when black people sing 'normal' voice u can hear the difference( uknow its 'black'voice) to white people, but when singing opera all sound "same"
Well, I honestly don't think it is a natural thing. I think it is a culturally learned thing. Just like kids that grow up listening to country tend to sing like country singers. It is the same as local dialect and accents that we pick up from our parents. Classical singers often try to steer away from those regional influences. At least, American classical singers do. Of course, some say there's an 'American' classical sound too. That's my opinion about it as an African American tenor! :)
This will have my wife's tag rather than mine cause she's logged in, but she'd second me on this. As a tenor, my best day was this guy's worst. Wow. I love the diction. You can't get a lot of guys that sing understandably in Italian. Or French, or German, Italian... so many worry about the sound production that they lose the words completely, NOT THIS GUY! Hats off to you, Larry. I have heard guys, and been the guy, that hits those notes, but he sings them with a rare, surpassing purity.
This is my first time hearing Brownlee. I actually prefer him over Florez, since he sings with much less nasality, with the exception of the passaggio.
WONDERFUL !!! a true belcantiste. Thanks for posting indeed because on youtube we don't see much of this gifted tenor (and .. I don't live in the US!)
NoW! Lawrence Brownlee is "Charged" with showing we have Black Luciano Pavoratti's and Placcido Domingos as well. He is capable of filling LARGE Shoes - I predict he SHALL
I wish him ALLL God's Blessings - May God's Fortune go with him
He is charged with showing a still biased and "blind" world that Black people (and all other non-White people) have their 'own' voices, not to be (so perpetually and unnecessarily) compared to their White predecessors and contemporaries. Amen.
aria is "Cessa de più resistere" and it´s a real bravura aria for coloratura tenors, brownlee does a very good job. this aria is oftne left out because of it´s difficult singing.
Thanks to Rockwell Blake ~ tenors are singing this aria again.....
well done Lawrance.
my only dislike is when he sings AW at - 6:48 and again at - 7:03 instead of the work "felicita". ~~~ JDF does this too. I think it is so much better the way it is written.

Finalmente un super tenore rossiniano! Colpisce molto la sua naturalezza e sicurezza.
Ho ascoltato tempo fa in teatro Juan Diego Florez e devo dire che Brownlee ha sicuramente una voce più calda e corposa. Veramente bravo!
