@cashyaug no way. There's a spirit in eugene of striving to be wholesome and free. A culture with respect for freedom always allows for more disfavorable activities as well, but for those who value the culture, it's by far worth it. There are so many good people and activities. I hope you find enthusiasm for health and intra-societal responsibility to be attractive qualities in people.

So I stopped at a gas station today to run in & grab a cold drink. I came out and some homeless dude was leaning against my truck. I asked him kindly to get off my truck. He stumbled alongside my truck & when I started it he reached for the passenger door damn near opening it but I hit the lock first. He then stepped onto my running board & grabbed the mirror. Well, I put it in reverse & floored it! He fell off. This guy tried to get in my truck! I say ship them out of the city!
@kangaldogs0331 This is a rare case and it is a shame you judge us all by the actions of one person. I am homeless and have been for a bit now. I do not use drugs, drink excessive alcohol nor am i uneducated. I am simply a casualty of the state of affairs in this country. Yes, there are those among the homeless population who are addicts, or who do not respect those around them, but were you to take the time to actually get ot know a few of them i think you would see that most are decent people
@kangaldogs0331 one guy so they all go huh? hope your homless then youll see. The dude schizophrenic alcoholic. He'd be in an institution if you hadn't voted for ronald regan who shut them down and dumped those guys on you street. Thanks for votin that way worked out reall good didn't it.
there's resources here, more places to stay, more general understanding of one's situation.
and considerably less competition for it. (there may be a lot of homeless people here but not nearly as much as there would be in the coastal cities of southern California. )
Great video. How about posting something about stan the homeless guy behind walmart on 11th who keeps getting ran out of the feild behind walmart but he refusses to leave because he takes cara of the ferrel cats and other animals there. Tell him tim in alaska says hi to him and kim
Many things that our government is doing is about their "big picture." They are taking away individual freedoms the freedom of choice. Seeking to change the face of America. It's not about what's going on "in America" but what America can do outside it's borders. The true rulers of this country are pushing it to dominate the entire globe...soon you will see four or more wars being fought in the middle east, and since this country is broke, it's going to be the undoing of this once great nation.
i live in portland oregon. ex military no criminal record no drugs. i am 24 years old only with a G.E.D. been unable to find work for the past seven months. fast food won't even hire me. I have no place to go no place to hide i don't qualifiy for unemployment checks. I'll be homless by the end of this month. I will try and make it however i am loosing hope. if i am still homless by fall i will be ending my life
I've thought about your comment for a week now. Life isn't about what you can get but what you give. We hear that in America a lot, but we rarely live it. I hope that giving and kindness kill you before a gun or a river. You have served our country honorably, and we all thank you, but don't dishonor us all and exclaim with a bullet that this country does not strive until the end. We all need each other and there's always some one to love.
You have GOT to be kidding about ending your life right? You crave attention right? Man, stop living for this world and all it's crazy uncertainty. Pray, and stay positive. Keep hope alive!!!!!!!
Well, thats your choice in my opinion. I don't think you have the stones for it or that you are really destitute given you are commenting from a computer but good luck, hope it all ends well for you. I am glad to hear you say you won't me leaching off of my tax dollars.
It is the Republicans that do not want to help folks like you. Right now this very day they are holding up giving an extention for the unemployed. This recession was caused by the deregulation of the financial sector and we should be taxing the wealthy to pay for extended benefits until the jobs come back.
Oh yea, I was homeless in the sht hole Eugene OR. But I did something about it. I had a brain, moved to Seattle and now I make, well, lets just say more than all the bums and losers combined in sht hole Eugene. I hate you all.
@lonewolf12052 wow! Theve got you so belivin you need all there shit that life aint worth livin without a job. You don't need a job man you need is a van. It provides shelter and transportation, safety and warmth. You can make $250 a month at a blood bank for gas and $200 a month for food stamps. Its easy. sleep late hang out with people. Hell even get a girl friend.
Your just bumed. If you want a job try the unemploymnet office. Fast food is not the answer
While the people running the town aren't the smartest or most progressive the street kids travel. this isn't as much about the homeless living in town as it is the street life that passes and interacts with eugene. Some stay. Instead of anger we need to have mercy while holding people accountable to give more than take. Mercy is toleration while someone tries to change.
I love Eugene. Look at the south. So pro business, so much crime, terrible environments. They have their poor too but they are all gangsters. We still have our environment and yes we don't want to have a corporate chain on every street corner.
Man this makes me feel bad and want to help but so powerless to really do much in Eugene, to tell the truth I've always felt sorry for those who don't have a home and nice warm bed to come home to at night...
No one is powerless to help when a pair of gloves cost .97 or a warm hat cost $1.00 also socks are like 6-10 pairs for like around $5.00 or $6.00 all at wal-mart also bible cnly cost $1.00 at the Christen book store on west 11th also there are $1.00 food items at allmost all fast food places and $5.00 pizza's @ little ceasers and if you can't afford any of that a prayer and a smile never hurt nobody.
this is hard to watch.. im new here and i have seen alot but not like this. where i come from street life is drugs and gun fights . here the killing is done without words in silence ...like the looks on the faces of the people driving cars as they watch the homeless sitting on the corner. they cant say anything because..... the killing is done in silence. (to the artist) this is great work i can feel the intensity in the work and how u captured the faces. god bless
So many long comments. I will say that they are quite a nuisance but they have seen their share. Which is more than I can say for most people nowadays
why does the city council allow these people to just do as they please. they plague our streets begging for money, sleeping in the parks that the public wont go to because they are too scared im talking about washington under the bridge. Needles found lying around just ask any city worker who landscapes or works in city owned areas. If they got money for smokes and drugs beer etc they got money for a ticket outta town. Torrey will have my vote he spoke to me about cleaning up our once nice town.
A person goes somewhere else. Get them out of Eugene. Duck1dodger is right, its a plague on the city. I have Kangal Dogs to keep people like this away from my home & property. He or she can also go live in Canada. There is a lot of open space there.
Hey, I lived in Eugene for five years and one of the things I miss the most are the homeless people. I used to take them into my home and let them stay with me sometimes. None of them ever stole from me or hurt me. Some of them were plagued with mental illness. I am not sure why people are responding so visciously. The majority of us are a paycheck from the street. Compassion is one of the only beautiful things left on this planet.
Boo frekedy Hoo, where did they get the camera to do this or computer to post it. If you can afford ciggarets you can afford to get on your feet. Too much pot smoking and not wanting to try is the problem. Kill them all.
I am pretty sure I saw lil Jesse (the guy with the black eye and blond hair, Stephen on the bench and then Gerri with the black shirt. Funny seeing familiar faces, were some of these clips from a few years back?
The fact of the matter is that we (Oregon) doesnt have the proper institutions to deal with them, plain and simple. Such a large portion of the homeless population is mentally insane, and they end up falling through the cracks and in jail WHICH IS NOT A PLACE FOR THEM TO BE. To make matters worse, when prisons release these people, they give them 10 days of medication, which isnt long enough to schedule a doctors visit to get more, so they fall back into the vicious cycle.
You are also forgetting about all of the systemic injustices that these people are born into, and that factor into their lives. Many of these people are born without all of the advantages that others have, and consequently society represses them.
rasr10, you should have been a blow job. Think about it...
Thats just a lie. Some of these people have college degrees. I don't but I have become successful even though I had a drunk for a dad & a mom who thought it was funny when her boyfriends put their cigarettes out on my back. You have to pick your shit up and do something! I do not feel sorry for them! Most of them had it better than me.
The majority of the homeless population are either mentally unfit, or do not have the resources to get a job and pull their life back together without the aid of someone else giving them a hand. Why do you think homeless people remain homeless? Is it because they like living on the street? No, its because they cannot find a job because they cannot present themselves in a proper way to someone in an interview, and dont have an address and phone number to put on the job application.
rasr10, thats a pretty bold statement to classify all of the homeless people in the city as screw ups. A large portion of this population is mentally unfit and have ended up where they are because there is no where for them to go. Many of the mentally insane people do end up in prison becasue they act out and there is not a loony bin to throw them into, prison is not a proper environment to rehabilitate a crazy person.
Well im gone in a few days and just thought id say bye to this weird town full of liberal biased wackjobs!! Love how our roads are fullof potholes and nobody does a thing then JUST BEFORE Election Mayor Kitty decides to have the Embarrasing Pot hole party that was a real scream at our work. If roads are bad just fix em. if people are criminals put em in jail But if your a liberal screw it all up.
I cried so hard. Yes, drugs are a problem, and Yes, Jesus is the answer. Jesus found me in roseburg oregon in 97' and cleaned me up. The love of His people changed my life so that i could start a ministry to others with a six piece christian rock group. also went into ministry on the air in southwest oregon to offer encouragement. Every day is a gift, just remember.....EVERYONE has a story, and some people go through pain so deep they don't know what to do with it.....you can help change them 2!
I grew up in eugene and I was so sick of the bums there. They clog up all of the parks and leve there trash everywhere. Nobody wants to bring their kids to play there in fear of the bums harassing them for money. They are on every street corner begging for change and make our beutiful city look and smeel like shit. I think these people are destructive to the city and economy. A drag on society and need to be removed.
It is annoying that they are begging all over town, but where should we send them? Now, think about this...now, this is crazy, but what if you sacrificed all you had to seek out who in the homeless community might actually be crying out for help. This would take strength and brains...but few people want to do that. You're right let's just get rid of them...better yet, let's have some one else get rid of them. Then we won't have to know where they went.
I would be glad to get rid of them myself. If I were the mayor I would round them up and put them in work camps. Even if they were down on their luck there are places for them to get help. But no of them want to sober up. They could atleast make it their problem only. I work hard for what I have and they just expect everyone else to give them a free hand every day. Fuck them. They are dirty pigs. If that makes me selfish then thats fine. You need to open your eyes.
Chris I do not know if you are the composer of this video but KUDOS to you. I am not an emotional person but you sure did it for me. How heart breaking Im glad to see that people still have compassion and love in their busy schedules to take notice of the little things as well as the big things. Thank you so very much. What a great message you have sent, I hope that you keep it up. Patrick
Actually eugene kinda sucks it really all about money look at the cost of housing its crazy. No real good paying jobs, Eweb charges an arm and a leg however sub in spfd is much cheaper. NO im not a fan of Eugene and im actually moving soon. The city council has ruiend our downtown mall, No free parking Transients all over the place its just gross im glad im outta her in less than a month. Oh Yeah, Hynix just shut down and there goes 1000 + jobs Way to go Eugene. Who do you really blame
I agree with a lot of that. Not sure about good paying jobs per capita, but Eugene has a lot of deep seated problems. I see what you don't like as the surface. The roots are much uglier. Whatever is up with the city council seems to be a plague that hits a lot of Eugenians. As far as getting out of here I wish i could sometimes. For now I stay here.
Just know wherever you go there's always some one to blame. Dating is fun. Marriage is much more work.
I have sympathy for people who have no choice being on the street, but the number of homeless young adults in Eugene was disturbing for me while living there. I am not exactly a paragon of industry myself, but I don't beg other people for change for drugs either. The problem is the heroin. The people that I knew that were doing heroin ten years ago are all dead. I feel bad for the homeless addict kids, but what can you tell them? Jesus is not the answer, though they will eat the free food.
They are homeless by choice. Nobody told them to start doing drugs. And anyone who would do them just because they were told to is an idiot anyway. They need to be rounded up and put in jail. That way they can sober up and think twice about killing this city. Fuck them.
You are selfish. Forget the homeless. Work on yourself. Also, read books (or watch movies). They challenge one's view of the world. At first I hated that, then a bit of my pride got chipped off, and now I love it when i can see through the eyes of another.
never homeless there but i got around. is the "frogman" still around?
my father used to hand out stuff to the people who would show up at the railroad yard, he is gone now and i moved a little east.....if i were to move to a city it would be back to Eugene.
very ,very nice video!! never forget 6th street, Roosevelt, skinners butte, and when they closed the mall to traffic. old stomping grounds....family still lives over there.
i was a homeless heroin addict in Eugene for about 6 years, with a few places to live in between, depending on who I was running dope for at the time. I grew up in Eugene and the heroin is ultimately why I had to move. Now my life in TX is wonderful (and clean for 2 years) but living on the streets in Eugene and Portland forever changed me. This video made me cry. I reognized some of the faces in it.
I loved this video. Its real. When I watched it I felt like I was back at home. I knew every place that it showed and I miss the people so much. We had to move a few years ago, but it will always be home.
I'm glad it was real for you. This is still home for me. Sometimes I like this place and sometimes I don't. But my Spirit isn't affected by geography only God. So, I'll stick around until I'm moved myself.
I know a number of faces in this video. I'm surprized im not one of them. these people are my FAMILY. they might not have the best of habits, but then again, not all of them had parents to teach them whats right and wrong... and who really has authority to tell them anyway? its not like we all dont have any vices. fuck anyone who thinks they can judge another. if you dont like it, than fuck off and die.
Thanks for writing something down for us. I have one question for you if you ever come back. What do you see when watching this? What do you think I was seeing? Because a part of me is home with people who are both free and lost. Another part gets frustrated with the stubbornness, but more so with the hard situation people find themselves in. Do you think I should show these faces on such a public level?
What I see when I watch this is sadness and beauty. I understand that some people choose it, and i understand that some people dont. its really hard to describe what i see. i guess the best way is that these are people we share this planet with, and, shit, if you're gonna throw away perfectly good things cause you have the money to do so, why not put it on the corner in a box so that someone might benefit from it. Ive lived this life, and everyone you meet on the street is different.
Some people do it for the travel, some for the booze, some for the drugs, and some dont have a choice in the matter.. some do it for festivals and outdoor gatherings, to meet some amazing people. to experience life from a "free" perspective. no rules, no responsibilities, some are just babies running away from their structured lives, running away from fucked up families, running away from themselves.. its all in the individual. i have so much to say im gonna just keep on keepin on with it..
what i think you were seeing? well in my mind, i put the wordless video and the religious music together and figured it had to do with that. religion.i thought you were seeing lost souls that need to ask for forgiveness and light. but i could be way off. i definitely get frustrated with the people who take and take and take, but that goes for everyone. whatever they can get their hands on they take.. it gives a bad name for those who really need some help and dont want to be viewed as lazy bums.
its also pretty tuff to find a job in eugene. venture data, ha ha. i had a hard enough time finding work myself. and when youve been homeless for even a year, employers look at that and dont hire you. and most have been homeless for longer than that! i think showing the video isnt wrong, but the music just makes you look at the picture, you couldnt hear that man playing his guitar and singing, or hear what those guys were saying when they traded an orange for a
There is a strong message here which has been beautifully blended with a fantastic Chris Rice song. Incredible faces and images. I love this video. Thank you again Mr. Whitaker for having the insight to make this film. (Sim6219...You missed it)
Talk about having to lower ones standards. Non stop wall to wall un-educated loosers, filthy, toothless drunks, brain dead hippies, pot heads, tweakers, ex-cons, petty thief, con-artists, bums, pigs, trailer park, red neck, hick, trash. Dumpster diving should be the cities official pastime and logo instead of that stupid yellow and green duck. No place else I have ever seen bums eating out of trash bins and begging for change with loads in their pants. Good riddance to Eugene Oregon!
after checking out sjm6219's channel and videos i conclude either he's bi-polar, some one else stole his identity and wrote the above, or he's one of these religious christians that lives on his own strength and knowledge.
the point of the video is to express how God's love has nothing to do with lowering one's standards. Our standards can't get any lower as they are. We are of no effect positively, in this world, without the entirety of God's way in us.
this video would have been better if it ended with bulldozers shoving dead hippie carcases into a mass grave. All you fuckin bums complaining about the government not taking care of people.. makes me sick. How about you take care of your own damn self and stop asking for handouts.

Why are people homeless in Eugene? If I were homeless I would head to the sunshine in southern California.
robabcock 2 years ago
there's resources here, more places to stay, more general understanding of one's situation.
and considerably less competition for it. (there may be a lot of homeless people here but not nearly as much as there would be in the coastal cities of southern California. )

dustinwhitaker 2 years ago
Many things that our government is doing is about their "big picture." They are taking away individual freedoms the freedom of choice. Seeking to change the face of America. It's not about what's going on "in America" but what America can do outside it's borders. The true rulers of this country are pushing it to dominate the entire globe...soon you will see four or more wars being fought in the middle east, and since this country is broke, it's going to be the undoing of this once great nation.

You are needed and valuable. We all are.

While the people running the town aren't the smartest or most progressive the street kids travel. this isn't as much about the homeless living in town as it is the street life that passes and interacts with eugene. Some stay. Instead of anger we need to have mercy while holding people accountable to give more than take. Mercy is toleration while someone tries to change.

why does the city council allow these people to just do as they please. they plague our streets begging for money, sleeping in the parks that the public wont go to because they are too scared im talking about washington under the bridge. Needles found lying around just ask any city worker who landscapes or works in city owned areas. If they got money for smokes and drugs beer etc they got money for a ticket outta town. Torrey will have my vote he spoke to me about cleaning up our once nice town.

where does a person go to sleep if he hasn't any place to call home?

Its truely sad.
RossLove01 3 years ago
You are also forgetting about all of the systemic injustices that these people are born into, and that factor into their lives. Many of these people are born without all of the advantages that others have, and consequently society represses them.
rasr10, you should have been a blow job. Think about it...
RossLove01 3 years ago 2
I appreciate the comment but let's not stoop to the level where our last saying is a cheap insult, no matter how clever it is.
dustinwhitaker 3 years ago
Thats just a lie. Some of these people have college degrees. I don't but I have become successful even though I had a drunk for a dad & a mom who thought it was funny when her boyfriends put their cigarettes out on my back. You have to pick your shit up and do something! I do not feel sorry for them! Most of them had it better than me.
kangaldogs0331 2 years ago
The majority of the homeless population are either mentally unfit, or do not have the resources to get a job and pull their life back together without the aid of someone else giving them a hand. Why do you think homeless people remain homeless? Is it because they like living on the street? No, its because they cannot find a job because they cannot present themselves in a proper way to someone in an interview, and dont have an address and phone number to put on the job application.
RossLove01 2 years ago
rasr10, thats a pretty bold statement to classify all of the homeless people in the city as screw ups. A large portion of this population is mentally unfit and have ended up where they are because there is no where for them to go. Many of the mentally insane people do end up in prison becasue they act out and there is not a loony bin to throw them into, prison is not a proper environment to rehabilitate a crazy person.

A drag on society and need to be removed.
rasr10 3 years ago
It is annoying that they are begging all over town, but where should we send them? Now, think about this...now, this is crazy, but what if you sacrificed all you had to seek out who in the homeless community might actually be crying out for help. This would take strength and brains...but few people want to do that. You're right let's just get rid of them...better yet, let's have some one else get rid of them. Then we won't have to know where they went.
dustinwhitaker 3 years ago
I would be glad to get rid of them myself. If I were the mayor I would round them up and put them in work camps. Even if they were down on their luck there are places for them to get help. But no of them want to sober up. They could atleast make it their problem only. I work hard for what I have and they just expect everyone else to give them a free hand every day. Fuck them. They are dirty pigs. If that makes me selfish then thats fine. You need to open your eyes.

Who do you really blame
duck1dodger 3 years ago

Jesus is not the answer, though they will eat the free food.
digiprez77 3 years ago
They are homeless by choice. Nobody told them to start doing drugs. And anyone who would do them just because they were told to is an idiot anyway. They need to be rounded up and put in jail. That way they can sober up and think twice about killing this city. Fuck them.
rasr10 3 years ago
You are selfish. Forget the homeless. Work on yourself. Also, read books (or watch movies). They challenge one's view of the world. At first I hated that, then a bit of my pride got chipped off, and now I love it when i can see through the eyes of another.

i was a homeless heroin addict in Eugene for about 6 years, with a few places to live in between, depending on who I was running dope for at the time. I grew up in Eugene and the heroin is ultimately why I had to move. Now my life in TX is wonderful (and clean for 2 years) but living on the streets in Eugene and Portland forever changed me.

Do you think I should show these faces on such a public level?
dustinwhitaker 3 years ago
What I see when I watch this is sadness and beauty. I understand that some people choose it, and i understand that some people dont. its really hard to describe what i see. i guess the best way is that these are people we share this planet with, and, shit, if you're gonna throw away perfectly good things cause you have the money to do so, why not put it on the corner in a box so that someone might benefit from it. Ive lived this life, and everyone you meet on the street is different.
PeaceMusicLovely 3 years ago
Some people do it for the travel, some for the booze, some for the drugs, and some dont have a choice in the matter.. some do it for festivals and outdoor gatherings, to meet some amazing people. to experience life from a "free" perspective. no rules, no responsibilities, some are just babies running away from their structured lives, running away from fucked up families, running away from themselves.. its all in the individual. i have so much to say im gonna just keep on keepin on with it..
PeaceMusicLovely 3 years ago
what i think you were seeing? well in my mind, i put the wordless video and the religious music together and figured it had to do with that. religion.i thought you were seeing lost souls that need to ask for forgiveness and light. but i could be way off. i definitely get frustrated with the people who take and take and take, but that goes for everyone. whatever they can get their hands on they take.. it gives a bad name for those who really need some help and dont want to be viewed as lazy bums.
PeaceMusicLovely 3 years ago
its also pretty tuff to find a job in eugene. venture data, ha ha. i had a hard enough time finding work myself. and when youve been homeless for even a year, employers look at that and dont hire you. and most have been homeless for longer than that! i think showing the video isnt wrong, but the music just makes you look at the picture, you couldnt hear that man playing his guitar and singing, or hear what those guys were saying when they traded an orange for a

Talk about having to lower ones standards. Non stop wall to wall un-educated loosers, filthy, toothless drunks, brain dead hippies, pot heads, tweakers, ex-cons, petty thief, con-artists, bums, pigs, trailer park, red neck, hick, trash. Dumpster diving should be the cities official pastime and logo instead of that stupid yellow and green duck. the point of the video is to express how God's love has nothing to do with lowering one's standards. Our standards can't get any lower as they are. We are of no effect positively, in this world, without the entirety of God's way in us.
