This takes me back to 1980 at helpston north of peterboro' [only 6 yrs old] seeing 55013 "The Black Watch" on a lkx-york stopper,125's where already in then really good video of deltics !!
Ah some lovely shots there, especially 55011 at donny, where I used to watch them on the Hull Exec or York semi fasts. If only I had my camcorder back then, sparks out the exhausts, smoke aplenty, and sheer brute noise. Shame they are all in my head....:-(
my dad took me to Newcastle central as a boy in the 1960s-a deltic pulled in next to where we were standing-and the cab door opened-the driver waved us towards him and gestured for me to go into the cab -only for a minute-but oh lordy-the noise in that cab at the age of six was deafening-the loco felt that it was gently rocking-never forget it
Is the opening clip at Warrington Bank Quay? Also hhis will come as no surprise to enthusiasts but it is a disgrace, that the Vulcan Foundary in Newton-Le-Willows as been flattened. it is in the process of becoming an housing estate. Why the site was made a museum or tourist attraction for the deltics, God only knows.
Well, I recently passed York railway museum just outside York station, situated right next to the railway line. Attached to the side is what looks like the restorarion and/or repair shop. You could just catch a peek in. It was early morning, dark, but the lights were on. I caught a glimpse of a loco. And the unmistakeable blue nose of a certain beast............
No other locomotive comes close and has such a huge following among modern traction enthusiasts. You can't get excited by a class 86, but you can about the Deltic.
@Glenn1967ful i get exited by class 86s, 86s are helfire dont dis them! i had a favourite of evry class favourite deltic 55013 favourite class 86 86235 u get the idia the point is i like 86s aswell
train porn at its best,as kids,we used to save all our paper round money, and head to the other side of the penines to york and doncaster to spot deltics, easily my best memories of the rail blue era, ta for posting
Hours spent on Selby and Doncaster station platform ends, frostbitten hands clutching tatty notebook and limp potted meat sandwich, cocking an ear to the biting north- easterlys, listening..listening.. for that unmistakeable distantly droning hum in the night.
Like fearful Dresdeners in the dark, awaiting the Lancasters..
I have a time machine available to rent- it is a bit temperamental though, I accidentally beamed a couple of Deltic bashers back to 1875- buy the time the prototype Deltic was built theyd died of old age! Great vid
A magic Video this thanks for uploading it.I have been reading the above posts and I agree that once you have heard those Napiers in action. The sound stays with you for the rest of your life.I first had Meld for haulage in 1975
from Darlington to York and I will never forget it,I went on to get them all including
St Paddy and Nimbus, A time machine would be most welcome Great Great Days,Fantastic Engines Designed/Built/Maintained by pure Geniuses.
sound of those engines will never leave me,as a child running out of school to see the 3.50 into lime sreet roaring past, saying its a white cab its a white cab,55015 meld my first deltic those memories, then going round doncaster works looking at st paddy in bits, wishing i had been around to see her running, anyone got a time machine?? XX DELTICS XX
only had Deltic 11 once from Berwick to Newcastle on the Dundee -Cross in 81 , they took it off and put a strumming ETH Duff on @ Newcastle . That was supposed to be the worst Deltic , but it was worth two of those Sulzer Strum Boxes and that's from a hard core old 40 basher !.
I wonder where all the metal of thse beasts went, could all be laying in a scrapheap, or omeone could be driving in a car or flying in a plane made of bits od deltic! Its sad.
Love the sound the Napier engine makes as the driver changes gear when pulling off. Brings back many memory's of a child laid in bed listening to the Deltics pulling out of Bank Top station at night.
Great vid! I too have fond memories of 55011, had a ride from Lime Street to Victoria behind her when they were working the T-Ps, and from Carlisle to Doncaster during the time the ECML was closed because of the Penmansheil Tunnel collapse. Best Deltic Memory? Seeing eight Deltics in an hour howling through Thirsk flat out one summer morning in 1976. Happy Days.
Brilliant the memories came flooding back,it reminds of the days we used to go to Durham from
Newcastle in 1976/77.There is a little castle above the railway station, with panoramic views across the viaduct.Well until the trees grew so high.Deltic after Deltic came flying past.great times also the last time i ever rode St Paddy or Nimbus sadly missed.
When railways were really interesting......nice to see a clip of 55011 at the beginning. I remember catching a ride behind her from of all places Stockport ! She took over a Shrewsbury - York TPO from 86221 'Vesta'...took me by surprise when I saw her easing over Stockport viaduct onto the train....ahh happy memories......thats one precious vid !!
I guess look like old double deck railway link with locomotive train. Nice to find!!!

Noise and power. Did EE ever sell BR a Deltic with the marinised units (3300bhp each)? Although traction might have been a problem

Great I would have rated this video but with 55 ratings I'll leave it with the class number!

How weird does Doncaster seem looking back before the OLE was erected?

I often wish these monsters were upgraded to 125 mph and can you imagine the engine noise? Much as I like the HST, the Deltic was always the guvnor.
Glenn1967ful 2 years ago
They don't make them like this any more, that engine sound is awesome, but oddly the horn is quite weak for such a powerful locomotive.
Glenn1967ful 2 years ago
Wonderful footage - and to think what I called them when they started replacing the pacifics lol...
