the maestro...jon lord. the mans a fucking genius. I have postponed my wedding cos hes playing near us this year [2010]. The main man, a class song..say no more
@urethra182 It's the way he amplifies the sound. The closest I've heard is Keith Emerson, but even he doesn't quite manage to get the same kind of growl and dynamics.
@TheKlabee Jon certainly used to play through a Marshall amp, but he only did it from early 1970 to 1973 on a regular basis. He went back to the leslie from the Burn album onwards. This version of Green Onions is pure tube-distorted leslie heaven!
@barrabasi Like you say, this is all Leslie, though I think it's a modified one? When he used "the beast" set-up, he could mix in as little or as much as he wanted. I saw him do that live in Glasgow - shows how old I am :).
@jamesbannon002 Well, yeah. That's likely. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty certian that during the 80's and 90's, with Purple, Jon used to have twin 122 leslies on stage, each one mounted on a subwoofer (first modification). And, specifically in the 80's, he used the leslies not only with the hammond: he leslied both the minimoog and memorymoog as well. When Steve Morse joined the band, he persuaded Jon to try some pedals for adding distortion and assorted effects to the organ.
Such a perfect roaring B3 sound almost makes Booker T sound mediocre - sorry, this might piss a few people off, but it had to be said!
Jon Lord is just such a perfectionist and quiet modest about it. Many tried, but failed to be as good as him. When his Leslie kicks in the hair on my neck stands up straight :)
Only a couple of seconds into the song and you can already be sure that no other, than Master Jon Lord is playing. Trademark technique, style and sound!

@barrabasi You're probably right. I didn't see Purple live after Jon started using the synthesisers, so couldn't testify to the amp & speaker set-up.
