  • Words can't express the greatness of this performance. I wonder how much did it cost to pay all of those musicians. They're like an army of aural beauty. I guess back then, orchestras were a dime a dozen. A very captivating performance. I would love to see more Baxter performances.

  • @Manwithjeep Gave them money!

  • i came....

  • 0.24 Holy shit bongo fury!

  • Les Baxter was always the one and only king of exotica, pure lushness..

  • Thanks God we had Les Baxter and thanks to the C.D. indutries that they're making C.Ds. of his music, the most woderful music I ever heard.

  • Check out my strings rendition of the 1967 Lassie Theme!

  • it's a new ford, a wonderful new year of true fords?!! the world of 1960!not one, not two! but 3 completely new kinds of ford car for 1960!

"1960 - Wonderful New World of Ford "

    check it out and see!

  • Oh , I haven't heard this for long long time , what is the name of this tune?

  • im creating a les baxter tribute video, and i was wondering if i could use some of this video, im setting my video to les baxter's atlantis, and the video would be pretty cool, thanks, let meknow

  • Delicious!

  • What is the name of the song they are playing?

  • You nailed it . Martin Denny should be given credit for popularizing the " exotic " genre , but the father and founder was Les . They don't make them like Mr. Baxter any more .

  • Great period piece! Love it! LOve his music!

  • That is superb! The piece is on his album Sensational, in better sound of course, but I love seeing the orchestra! Thanks for posting, what a treat.

  • Les Baxter's music from his LPs Ritual of the Savage, Tamboo, African Jazz, Jungle Jazz and Sacred Idol is among the best of the 20th Century. He was seriously underrated and immensely talented. Martin Denny made a career out of covering Baxter's tunes. Most of the "exotica" genre artists didn't compose their own music, but Baxter composed and conducted all of his music.

  • I noticed on two rerecordings of Baxter's scores for "Master Of The World" and "Alakazam The Great", the conductor and orchestra was credited as "Cal Carter And The 100 Men". This may sound ridiculous, but could this be a pseudonym? Because the tempo in the original score and the rerecording for "Master Of The World" are exactly alike!

  • The name of the song on this video is "It's A Big Wide Wonderful World" (not to be confused w. the nauseating Louis Armstrong song we're always hearing). It was the theme song of the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Rexall radio program that was spun off the Jack Benny show in the late 40s. This is a really super neat-o boss version of the song, but the Les Baxter versions of songs were always the best.

  • @RRaquello "... the theme song of the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Rexall (That's All!) radio program that was spun off the Jack Benny show in the late '40's."

WTF?! Are you as old as I am? Like, middle 70's?

  • I love Les Baxter!

  • Damn you hippies! You ruined American music. Bring back exotica and let's dance again!!!

  • This is incredible - an overture worthy of any major film or Broadway play ! ! ! the musicians all seem to be playing doubletime. Les and his peers were all incredible. Record sales of the time prove that we loved them all..

  • I love exotica, anyone who is new to this genre get Taboo by Arthur Lyman......classic

  • les baxter reminds me of ray connif orchestra many years ago

  • sammipink - if you like Ray Conniff, Ive got nearly 300 of his songs on 14 playlists. I've only found 37 for Les Baxter, but I've got over 2100 songs on 185 more playlists. Let me know what you think!

  • Bongos were great in music till HIPPIES thought that banging it by itself all day was music.

  • beautiful music. LOVE the bongos

  • anyone knows the soundtrack he made on The Lost Battalion? songs name**

  • I always thought Les Baxter was underrated as a film composer. Just listen to his scores for "The Pit And The Pendulum", "Black Sunday", and "Master Of The World" (recently issued on a L.E. C.D. that just sold out).

  • Lovely Lex!

  • It is good to finally get to see what Les Baxter was like conducting. Thank you.

  • Thanks for this great video!

  • Bongo bongo.. Swell!!!

Thank you so much for adding :)

  • Fabulous - thank you !

  • I LOVE LES.

  • Yes, pap4456 is correct, this video is quite good quality--I just saw some sub-standard quality video on You Tube, in fact right before I found this, so believe me, chrisrad79, you've got nothing to worry about--this is superb!

  • I'm fairly certain Les Baxter composed or played the music for the TV series "Lassie" during the "Timmy" (Jon Provost) years, at least for the incidental music, if not the actual theme song of the program itself; though if memory serves me correctly, the music credits at the show's ending credit scroll says "Sid Sidney." Was this some pseudonym used by Baxter?

  • I don´t know about that pseudonym, but downloading Les Baxter via Limewire "Lassie" was offered ;) So: i think, yes.

  • heckuva find. I'm more a "rocker," but this guy was outstanding!

  • On the contrary, this is good video quality! Is that Larry Bunker on timps, bongos and chimes?

  • awesome video !

i so love les baxter !

dyu have more from his orchestra?

  • Somebody post some of his film music, please!
