Words can't express the greatness of this performance. I wonder how much did it cost to pay all of those musicians. They're like an army of aural beauty. I guess back then, orchestras were a dime a dozen. A very captivating performance. I would love to see more Baxter performances.
im creating a les baxter tribute video, and i was wondering if i could use some of this video, im setting my video to les baxter's atlantis, and the video would be pretty cool, thanks, let meknow
You nailed it . Martin Denny should be given credit for popularizing the " exotic " genre , but the father and founder was Les . They don't make them like Mr. Baxter any more .
Les Baxter's music from his LPs Ritual of the Savage, Tamboo, African Jazz, Jungle Jazz and Sacred Idol is among the best of the 20th Century. He was seriously underrated and immensely talented. Martin Denny made a career out of covering Baxter's tunes. Most of the "exotica" genre artists didn't compose their own music, but Baxter composed and conducted all of his music.
I noticed on two rerecordings of Baxter's scores for "Master Of The World" and "Alakazam The Great", the conductor and orchestra was credited as "Cal Carter And The 100 Men". This may sound ridiculous, but could this be a pseudonym? Because the tempo in the original score and the rerecording for "Master Of The World" are exactly alike!
The name of the song on this video is "It's A Big Wide Wonderful World" (not to be confused w. the nauseating Louis Armstrong song we're always hearing). It was the theme song of the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Rexall radio program that was spun off the Jack Benny show in the late 40s. This is a really super neat-o boss version of the song, but the Les Baxter versions of songs were always the best.
@RRaquello "... the theme song of the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Rexall (That's All!) radio program that was spun off the Jack Benny show in the late '40's."
This is incredible - an overture worthy of any major film or Broadway play ! ! ! the musicians all seem to be playing doubletime. Les and his peers were all incredible. Record sales of the time prove that we loved them all..
sammipink - if you like Ray Conniff, Ive got nearly 300 of his songs on 14 playlists. I've only found 37 for Les Baxter, but I've got over 2100 songs on 185 more playlists. Let me know what you think!
I always thought Les Baxter was underrated as a film composer. Just listen to his scores for "The Pit And The Pendulum", "Black Sunday", and "Master Of The World" (recently issued on a L.E. C.D. that just sold out).
Yes, pap4456 is correct, this video is quite good quality--I just saw some sub-standard quality video on You Tube, in fact right before I found this, so believe me, chrisrad79, you've got nothing to worry about--this is superb!
I'm fairly certain Les Baxter composed or played the music for the TV series "Lassie" during the "Timmy" (Jon Provost) years, at least for the incidental music, if not the actual theme song of the program itself; though if memory serves me correctly, the music credits at the show's ending credit scroll says "Sid Sidney." Was this some pseudonym used by Baxter?
